    SPECTACULAR DUBLIN INTERIOR TO BE AUCTIONED OFF BY ADAMS

    PAIR OF LOUIS XVI GILTWOOD FRAMED MARQUISE ARMCHAIRS, by JEAN BAPTISTE III LELARGE (1743-1802) AT ADAMS. UPDATE: THESE WERE UNSOLD.

    Precious objects from a spectacular interior at one of the most graceful squares in Ireland come under the hammer at Adams on June 21.  The contents of 24 Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin will be on view in situ over the preceding three days.

    Kevin and Rose Kelly, synonymous with glossy publications such as World of Interiors and Image, are downsizing.  They are disposing of contents amassed over 40 years of collecting.  The catalogue for the 590 lot sale is on-line.
    The collection draws together paintings from the Irish, English and Dutch Schools, Fine English and French furniture, fine silver, china, objets d’art and a wide variety of decorative pieces. There is a small couture section including Dior and Chanel designer-wear.

    Furniture highlights include a magnificent pair of sumptuously upholstered Louis XV giltwood Marquise armchairs made by Jean Baptiste Lelarge (1743-1802). They are estimated at 40,000 plus. The Kellys purchased these chairs from Bond Street dealers, Partridge. A Louis XV ormolu mounted kingwood and tulipwood bureau plat is signed by Nicolas Petit. Purchased from Monaco dealers Sapjo it is estimated at €30,000/50,000. A Louis XV giltwood framed canapé by ebeniste E.T.Nauroy, also from Partridge, is estimated at €8,000/12,000.
    There are English, Irish and French side-tables, bookcases, a dining table and chairs, mirrors, couches, soft furnishings, garden furniture and beds complete with Lyon silk and silk damask bedspreads and canopies.
    There are 17th and 18th Century portraits include two by Dutch artist Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661) both dated c.1640 and estimated at €20,000+ each. A massive portrait by Godfrey Kneller of a young lady, believed to be the artist’s daughter, Agnes, is estimated at €25,000 +.  There is a family group believed to be of Gerrit Jacob Witszoon, Burgomaster of Delft with his wife and daughter probably painted by Michiel van Mierevelt in the early years of the 17th Century. Irish art includes watercolour sketches by Maurice MacGonigal, two oils by Grace Henry and still lifes by Nicolo Caracciolo RHA and Martin Mooney.

    REGENCY LIBRARY TABLE FROM GALWAY ESTATE AT BONHAMS

    A Regency rosewood library table with Irish provenance at Bonhams. UPDATE: IT MADE £264,000

    A Regency rosewood library table originally from Tyrone House, an Irish estate in County Galway, is to be sold at Bonhams, as part of its Fine English Furniture and Works of Art Sale on June 15. Built in 1779 by Christopher St. George (1754-1826) Tyrone House was designed by Waterford architect John Roberts (1712-1796). Christopher St. George lived in the house for twenty years before passing it to his son, Arthur French, who, during the 1820s, also occupied Kilcolgan Castle. By 1905, the family was based between Dublin and America and the contents of the house were split amongst family members.  The table, estimated at £100,000 – 150,000, passed through the St. George family by descent.

    In 1921, the house was burnt down by the IRA, who believed it to be a base for the Black and Tans.   The Irish Georgian Society acquired the ruin in 1972.  It is a moody local ruin opposite the St George family mausoleum which inspired John Betjeman to write in his poem, Ireland with Emily:
    ‘There in pinnacle protection
    One extinguished family waits
    A Church of Ireland resurrection
    By the broken, rusty gates’
    UPDATE:  The library table sold for a remarkable £264,000 at Bonhams.

    CLOCK STRIKES THE RIGHT NOTE IN DURROW

    This Edwardian and marquetry mahogany quarter-chiming long case clock, made 12,000 at Sheppards in Durrow.

    One of a pair of Sheraton style mahogany and marquetry cabinets, circa 1900, each with a serpentine top, which made 12,500 at hammer at Sheppards.

    HEGARTY’S SALE IN BANDON ON MAY 8

    INTERNATIONALISATION OF THE IRISH ANTIQUE AUCTION MARKET

    The internationalisation of the Irish antique and art market is becoming increasingly apparent. Sales at Sheppards, a long established Irish provincial auction house, reflect this changing market.  The three day sale at Sheppards in Durrow, Co. Laois on May 10, 11 and 12 offers much that is of interest to local, national and international buyers.

    In the past the advantage of the Durrow location was that it was on the main Dublin-Cork road and as a result was easily reached from many points in the country.  Nowadays because of the internet such sales are accessible to collectors everywhere.  From Durrow Sheppards enjoys a reach that is increasingly global.  Location is no longer the factor it used to be.  Sheppards, in common with a number of other Irish auction houses, now ship to everywhere.

    SALE OF CONTENTS FROM THREE CONVENTS

    In Ireland in the 1990’s and a little bit beyond sales of contents  from former monasteries and convents were a regular feature on the auction scene.  Such sales are more rare nowadays.  So there is bound to be interest  in a single sale from three convents on Sunday May 1.
    The auction features objects from the Convents of Mercy in Cobh, Co. Cork and Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford  as well as from St. Marie’s of the Isle in Cork city. It will be held at St. Marie’s of the Isle in Cork city centre and will be conducted by P.J. O’Gorman auctioneer of Charleville, Co. Cork.
    It features a set of four large prints of Rome by Giovanni Battista Piranesi framed by the old Cork concern of Guy and Company.   There are library bookcases, Victorian and Regency dining tables, antique breakfast tables, a mahogany longcase clock by Mangan’s of Cork, a carved throne chair, display cabinets, a seven piece inlaid drawingroom suite, kneehole desks, four pianos, church pews, statues, brass and china among 416 lots.
    UPDATE:  The auction was almost a complete sellout with all but three lots finding buyers.

    A TALE OF TWO AUCTIONS IN CORK AND KERRY

    Expert restoration is needed for this c1760 Irish tallboy at Lynes and Lynes.

    This Irish Georgian Tallboy, circa 1760 is from the Lynes and Lynes sale in Cork on Sunday April 17 at 3 p.m.. The colour is untouched, the bracket feet and top moulding are gone.  Nonetheless it is a serious piece of antique furniture.

    Measuring three feet wide it is estimated at 1000-2000.

    There is a Fermoy longcase clock included in this sale of Georgian, Victorian and later furniture and effects at Lynes and Lynes new premises at Eastlink Business Park, Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork.

    An early 19th century walnut davenport is estimated at 1,000-1,500. The sale features easy chairs and sets of chairs including six Victorian spoon back chairs with an estimate of 600-1,000.

    Among the lots on offer at this sale are bookcases, sideboards, dumb waiters and two card tables.

    This Han Dynasty Amphora made from burnished black earthenware is at Kerry Auction Rooms, Tralee on April 19. It is estimated at 400-500. (click on image to enlarge)

    The auction at Kerry Auction Rooms in Tralee on April 19 at 2 p.m. features a number of unusual items including this Han Dynasty amphora dating from c200 B.C.

    A first British edition of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by James Joyce dating from 1916 is estimated at 800-1,200.

    Art includes an oil on paper”Race meeting” by Con Campbell with a starting price of 800, a gouache on paper ” Still Life”by Basil Ivan Rakoczi with a starting price of 800,  a watercolour port scene by Alethea Hill Platt (1861 – 1932) with a starting price of €700, an oil on canvas ” Still life of flowers” by Lady Kate Dobbin RHA with a starting price of €400 and a self portrait by Stella Steyn.

    There is a selection of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, coins and banknotes, silver, jewellery and collectibles among the 1,000 lots on offer.

    UPDATE:  The amphora sold for 250, the first British edition of Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist did not sell, Con Campbell’s Race meeting made 800 as did the still life by Basil Rakoczi.

    THREE CENTURIES OF IRISH ANTIQUES AT O’DRISCOLL CORK SALE

    THE Morgan O’Driscoll sale at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Little Island, Cork, on April 17 at 4 p.m.  features 460 lots embracing three centuries of period furniture, silver, jewellery and art.  It is being held on the instructions of the executors of the late Alan Haughton.  The auction will include around 90 lots of silver, 25 lots of jewellery and about 60 lots of art.
    Among the furniture on offer is a set of eight Cork 11-bar chairs, an Irish Regency parquetry bookcase, a Cork Regency sideboard, a Regency dining table, a Georgian
    chest, 19th century wall mirrors, an 18th century Irish tallboy, a Georgian linen press, a Regency Cork clock and a 19th century demi-lune card table.

    CONTRASTING ANTIQUE SEATING STYLES

    These contrasting settees were quickly snapped up at Mealy’s auction in Mallow Castle, Co. Cork on April 5.   The Regency period carved giltwood settee on the left made a hammer price of 6,500.  It had been in the Kilkenny Castle sale in 1935.

    The ornate Japanese seat on the right made a hammer price of 5,800.  The back is profusely carved with scrolling dragons, the hinged seat is flanked with arm rests in the form of a dragon and it is just over five feet wide.  Click on either image to enlarge.

    ANTIQUES AND INTERIORS SALE AT HEGARTY’S, BANDON

    The antiques and interiors auction at Hegarty’s in Bandon, Co. Cork on Sunday, April 3 at 4 p.m. will include furniture, jewellery, silver, paintings and ceramics. This is a sale of around 500 lots.  There is a one-owner offering of six 19th century Victorian and Regency sewing and works tables, amassed over the past 20 years.

    The sale includes about 20 lots of jewellery and 20 garden items.  The catalogue is available on-line.  Hegarty’s are located at Parnell Business Park, The By-pass, Bandon and hold regular monthly sales.
