INTEREST MOUNTING IN THE MOUNT CONGREVE CONTENTS AUCTION

Interest is mounting in the Mount Congreve contents auction. Numerous international enquiries are in, particularly in relation to the Oriental lots. There is no shortage of collectors registered to bid on-line. Mealy’s in association with Christie’s will offer 1,100 lots from Mount Congreve, Kilmeaden, Co. Waterford on July 10 and 11. Viewing starts on Saturday July 7 and the sales will take place on each day at 11 a.m. The catalogue for the sale is on-line at www.mealys.com. Meantime here is a small selection. The prices quoted under the images are hammer prices to which must be added around 25 per cent to cover fees, charges and commissions.

PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY OIL PORTRAITS AT HEGARTY’S IN BANDON

A pair of 18th century oil portraits of Captain William Spaight and his wife Millicent Anne Studdert come up at Hegarty’s sale in Bandon on July 3. A British Army Captain of the 65th Regiment he served at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 during the Siege of Boston early in the American Revolutionary War. The British suffered heavy losses but Capt. Spaight survived. He died in 1801 at his home at Corbally, Co. Clare. The artist is unknown but the portraits are estimated at 2,000-4,000.

There is a selection of antique furniture including an 18th century Irish side table, a 19th century marquetry longcase clock, an 18th century Irish plate bucket, an Irish Chippendale fold over card table and a Killarney wine table with armorial crest.

GEORGE III IRISH MIRROR CHANDELIER AT SOTHEBY’S

An oval George III Irish cut glass mirror chandelier comes up at Sotheby’s Arts of Europe sale in London on July 3. Made c1790 the mirror has a border of faceted drops and the chandelier has seven lights. It is estimated at £40,000-60,000.

A folio of Irish landscapes by John Laporte comes up at Sotheby’s Old Master and British Drawings sale on the following day. The 62 pencil and one pen and ink works in the folio include views of Belleek; Muckross Abbey; Killarney Lake from Innisfallen; Kenmare Church with Landsdown Lodge in the distance; Turk Lake, Killarney; Glenflesk near Killarney; the Brickeen Bridge, Killarney; the Ardtully Bridge on the Rowdy River; Blackwater Bridge; Loch Derg and the Dublin Lighthouse. One is dated July 31, 1798, another is dated just 1798. The estimate is £3,000-6,000.

GEORGIAN AND VICTORIAN FURNITURE AT MARSHS SALE IN CORK

The sale at Marshs in Cork on June 30 features Georgian and Victorian furniture as well as silver, plate, porcelain and art. Among the main lots is a 19th century Louis XV style bonheur du jour with Sevres plaques (3,000-4,000), a Dutch marquetry card table (1,200-1,500), a nest of inlaid Killarney tables (3,000-4,000), a Georgian wine cooler (1,800-2,000) and Regency and Victorian dining tables. SCHREIBER COLLECTION AT MOUNT CONGREVE AUCTION IN JULY

The Schreiber Collection of salt glaze ceramics is one of the more unusual lots at the Mount Congreve sale in Kilmeaden, Co. Wateford on July 10 and 11. It was assembled during travels in Europe between 1869 and 1884 by Lady Charlotte Schreiber, a direct ancestor of the Congreves of Mount Congreve. Much of her collection of china, playing cards and fans was donated to the South Kensington Museum, (now the V and A). This single lot collection, including the Spanish cabinets specially made for it, remained in the family. It will be offered with two of her journals. On the open market for the first time ever it is estimated at 40,000-60,000.

Treasures from Mount Congreve will be offered by Mealy’s and Christie’s in a two day marquee sale. Estimates for the 1,100 lots are from 150 euro up. The catalogue is on-line at www.mealys.com The auction of 120 lots from Mount Congreve at Christie’s in London in May attracted buyers from around the world and brought in £3.4 million sterling. There is a shell grey saloon type Rolls Royce, Phantom VI, registered in 1969. It has had only one owner and is estimated at 12,000-18,000.

HEGARTY’S SALE IN BANDON ON JUNE 5

Hegarty’s sale in Bandon on June 5 at 7 p.m. includes the collection of the late Canon John Barry Deane, one of the best known figures in the Church of Ireland. The auction of 320 lots includes antique furniture, silver and books, including a copy of Bennett’s History of Bandon. There are four watercolors by Lady Kate Dobbin, a great aunt of the late Canon Barry Deane. Here is a small selection.

CAST IRON CANNONS IN CORK AUCTION

Two large cast iron cannon guns, measuring 3’6″ and 4′ respectively, will be offered at the Lynes and Lynes auction at Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on May 26. Dating to c1760 they are estimated at 1,000-2,000 each. The sale features antique furniture, rare books of Cork interest and collectibles including Belleek and Waterford Glass. RARE PAINTING OF LE BROCQUY AT HIS EASEL

Robert Ballagh's portrait of Louis le Brocquy. UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR 17,500.

The sale at Matthews Auction Rooms on Capel St., Dublin on May 27 features a rare painting of Louis le Brocquy working at his easel. It was painted from life by artist Robert Ballagh to commemorate le Brocquy’s 90th birthday. It is estimated at 20,000-30,000. Louis le Brocquy died last April aged 95. The auction features more than 350 lots including antique furniture and art.
