    MOUNT CONGREVE SALE TO GENERATE WORLDWIDE INTEREST AMONGST COLLECTORS

    THE sale of contents from Mount Congreve in Co. Waterford will generate worldwide interest amongst collectors this summer. Christie’s and Mealy’s will offer contents from one of Ireland’s grandest stately homes in sales in London on May 23 and at a marquee in the beautiful grounds of the house at Kilmeaden, Co. Waterford on July 10 and 11. The London Sale (on the same day as Christie’s British and Irish art sale, see post for April 14) will comprise a carefully curated selection of approximately 120 lots of furniture, paintings, silver and Chinese and European porcelain.  It is expected to bring in more than £2.5 million.

    The collection at Mount Congreve has been evolving since the neo-classical house, designed by John Roberts for John Congreve, was built in 1760. Charles Cator, deputy chairman, Christie’s International, remarked: “This collection highlights the importance of distinguished provenance, comprising works from many illustrious collections of great renown, from the Rothschild family in London and The Earls of Coventry at Croome Court to Studley Royal and Middleton Park, among many others”.

    Ambrose Congreve, who died suddenly at the age of 104 last May while on a visit to London to visit the Chelsea Flower Show, added to the lavish collection at Mount Congreve over the last 60 years. A passion for French furniture was a constant theme during the formation of the collection.  Full advantage was taken of the treasures to be found in English country house dispersal sales after 1945.  Here is a small selection of highlights, all courtesy Christie’s Images Ltd., 2012.

    ANTIQUE OAK FURNITURE AT BONHAMS IN CHESTER

    Outstanding antique oak furniture will come under the hammer at Bonhams in Chester on May 24.  The Beedham collection is from a family whose name has been a byword for excellence in antique oak furniture for over four decades.

    Herbert and Norma Beedham, whose business is based at Hungerford, Berkshire, are retiring. Beedham Antiques will continue under the direction of their son, Paul who will take the business into the 21st century where it will be more website based with a strong presence at antique fairs. They have exhibited regularly at Olympia Fine Art and Antiques fairs.

    Bonhams say that the sale represents a chance to own a piece of furniture made during the reign of Henry VIII.  Prices range from £100 to £30,000.

    GEORGE III IRISH SILVER SAUCE TUREEN MAKES 1,850 AT WOODWARDS

    Among the top lots at the Woodwards auction in Cork was this George III Irish bright cut silver sauce tureen with cover and vase finial.  Made by Thomas Jones in Dublin c1793 it weighs 18 ozs.  It sold for 1,850.  A Georgian mahognay chest on chest on bracket feet sold for 1,800, a pair of Tipperary cut glass chandeliers, each with 16 arms, sold for 2,600, a George II London silver square shaped salver c1728 made 1,250, a Georgian three drawer bookcase made 1,200 and a Victorian bookcase with shaped top and glazed doors sold for 1,100.

    WILLIAM IV TABLE WITH SPECIMEN MARBLE TOP MAKES 22,000 AT MEALY’S

    A William IV centre table with specimen marble top was the top lot at Mealy’s sale in Castlecomer this week.  Estimated at just 2,000/3,000 the table sold for a hammer price of 22,000.  The top, which had not been seen on the auction market before, is inlaid with a scallop shell and three fish and an outer variegated marble band.

    At the same sale a landscape with figures by Robert Carver (c1730-1791) sold for 20,000. Originally in the collection at Westport House, Co. Mayo the painting surmounted a three panel mirror in a Georgian giltwood frame with egg and dart moulding. The two day sale of over 1300 lots was 70 per cent sold and realised approximately 520,000 at hammer.

    A landscape with travellers resting attributed to Jan Breughel made 15,500, a pair of 19th century kingwood and marquetry fold over card tables made 8,000 and an architectural capriccio labelled Circle of Ghisolfi made 5,600.

    No less than 1,000 bidders registered for the sale, 500 of them on the internet.  The auction was 70 per cent sold and brought in 520,000 at hammer.

    SPRING INTO MEALY’S AUCTION AT CASTLECOMER

    The Spring fine and decorative art auction at Mealy’s, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on April 3 and 4 offers a variety of interesting opportunities for collectors with more than 1,300 lots.  Among the lots to be sold on day one are are silver, jewellery, glass, vintage fashion, scientific instruments, light fittings and a collection of Irish whiskey will .     A pair of William IV library chairs will be among more than 100 lots of furniture at Hegarty’sauction in Bandon, west Cork on March 25 at 3 p.m.  They are estimated at 4,000-6,000. English and Irish silver, collectibles, mirrors, porcelain and art will be among more than 300 lots on offer.  Here is a small selection:

    IRISH SIDE TABLES SELL AT CHRISTIE’S IN LONDON

    THIS IRISH GEORGE II MAHOGANY SIDE TABLE CIRCA 1760 made £39,650.

    Antique Irish side tables made prices ranging from £31,250 to £46,850 at Christie’s in London on March 16. At the same sale a late 19th century Irish ormolu hexagonal hall lantern once at Castle Hyde in Fermoy, Co. Cork sold for £9,375. Last sold at Christie’s in 1993 it was from the property of the late F.C. Quinn, Mount Kennedy House. Co. Wicklow and featured in a sale of three private collections.
    The most expensive table was a c1760 Irish George II table with lion mask frieze. It made £46,850. A table of similar vintage with scallop shell frieze made £39,250. Both had been estimated at £40,000-60,000. An Irish George II side table with later breccia marble top above a frieze once in the collection of Simon Sainsbury made £31,250 over an estimate of £20,000-30,000.

    THE REMARKABLE GUNTER SACHS COLLECTION AT SOTHEBY’S

    Artworks and objects from the remarkable collection of the late playboy, photographer and style icon Gunter Sachs will be offered by Sotheby’s in London on May 22-23 next. More than 300 lots are on offer in a sale expected to make over £20 million. Collecting categories from Surrealism and Nouveau Realism, to Pop Art, Art Deco, Furniture and Graffiti and estimates are from £50 up to £3 million.  In his capacity as a collector he was both passionate and a pioneer who accumulated a renowned avant-garde assemblage of art and furniture over 50 years. He believed that art should be lived with.

    Cheyenne Westphal, Chairman of Contemporary Art Sotheby’s Europe, said: “Sotheby’s is tremendously privileged to have been entrusted with the sale of this remarkable collection, which truly captures the essence of Gunter Sachs’ life in the 1960s and 1970s and reveals his little-known side as one of the most visionary and influential collectors of the 20th century. The confluence of zeitgeist, exceptional provenance and arresting images of style-icon Gunter Sachs and movie star Brigitte Bardot – his second wife – by the hottest artists and most accomplished photographers of their time, including Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon, makes this assemblage among the most desirable single owner collections ever to come to market.”

    At the core of the collection is an exceptional group of Pop Art masterpieces by Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselman and Roy Lichtenstein acquired in the late ’60’s and early ’70’s.  In 1972 Sachs presented Warhol’s first large exhibition in Europe in Hamburg. Not a single picture sold on the opening night so Sachs secretly purchased half the works to save the embarrassment of admitting this to his friend Andy. Years later Sachs thanked the people of Hamburg for their then still-dormant interest in Pop Art, enabling him to make one of the smartest collecting decisions of his life.  Warhol’s flower painting is one of the only six works in this format.  There are landmark pieces of 20th century design, including work by artisan furniture makers like Louis Marjorelle, Emille-Jacques Ruhlmann, Edgar Brandt and Diego Giacometti.

    UPDATE:  – The Evening Sale of the Gunter Sachs Collection brought IN £35,628,250 – well above the pre-sale high estimate of £25 million. Over 90% of lots were sold.

    TEFAF SILVER JUBILEE AT MAASTRICHT

    With an insistence on quality underpinnings its success TEFAF, the European Fine Art Fair, celebrates its silver jubilee at the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre in The Netherlands from March 16 to March 25, 2012. This year there is a spectactular new entrance hall with a light installation by artist Leo Villareal.

    There will be 260 art and antiques dealers from Argentina, Austria, Belgium,  Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and Uruguay at TEFAF.
