The premier antique fair in the United States, New York’s Winter Show, will offer an extraordinary variety of vetted antiques from around the world spanning 5,000 years from antiquity to today. The annual extravaganza at the Park Avenue Armory will bring together 65 renowned international dealers in fine and decorative arts from January 19-28. Established in 1954 it has consistently addressed the shifting role and value of art, antiques and design. New European exhibitors this year include Galerie Nathalie Motte Masselink (Paris) with Old Master drawings, Galerie Léage (Paris) with objects and furniture from the 18th century in a shared stand with Carolle Thibaut-Pomerantz (Paris) and Peter Harrington (London) specialising in rare books, manuscripts, and works on paper. Returning exhibitors of Daniel Blau of Munich will offer Modern and Contemporary works on paper, Robert Young of London with British and European folk and naive art and Wartski London with antique jewelry, Fabergé and silver Aronson Antiquaire of Amsterdam with 17th and 18th century Delftware and Koopman Rare Art of London with fine English silver, gold boxes and jewellery.

In the run up to Christmas the antique and art season is beginning to really hot up. Limerick racecourse is the venue for the National Antiques, Art and Vintage fair today and tomorrow. Outstanding Irish art will come under the hammer at de Veres in Dublin next Tuesday and Sotheby’s expects around €2 million worth of Irish art to change hands at evening and day sales in London on Tuesday and Wednesday. The calendar for the next few weeks is brimful of interest and offers a huge array of choice to eager collectors across all price levels and genres. Limerick Racecourse has proven to be an ideal venue for Hibernian Antique Fairs. There is easy access and lots of space for antique shops, art galleries and vintage dealers. An across the board selection this weekend includes a Victorian vanity box complete with travel accessories, bottles and even hat pins. Along with a covetable selection of antique furniture including a c1790 Irish double sided library table with hairy paw feet and Irish art there are selections of clocks and watches, militaria, jewellery, porcelain and silver.

The evening and day sales at Sotheby’s in London on November 21 and 22 are part of British and Irish art week, a series of events celebrating the art of Ireland and Britain from the 19th to the 21st centuries. A total of 54 lots of Irish art will feature with the evening sale headed by two works from Sir John Lavery and two by Jack B Yeats. The Lavery’s have emerged from the collection of the artists family. Another evening highlight is a significant early carving by F.E. McWilliam titled Woodhenge. The estimate for the piece is €229,220-€343,830. Meantime Bonhams first sale on the island of Ireland is now open for bidding online. The Irish Sale: Vision and Voice will offer art by Paul Henry, Donald Teskey, Sir William Orpen, Maeve McCarthy, Margaret Clarke, Frank McKelvey, Wiliam Leech and Jack B Yeats along with an annotated typescript of Finnegans Wake by James Joyce and handwritten lyrics of Your Song Saved My Life by Bono. The auction will be on view at the City Assembly House in Dublin from November 24-28, when the sale will be held.

There will be more than 80 dealers in attendance showing everything from Irish art and antique furniture to vintage fashion, jewellery, accessories and a wide range of collectibles. Lucian Freud’s Donegal Man will be offered by Dickinson at Frieze in London next week with a price tag of £15 million (€17.28 million). On the market for the first time Freud’s Profile Donegal Man, considered to be one of his greatest late portraits, will highlight the exhibition Artists in SOHO, Lawrence to Freud by London gallery Dickinson at Frieze Masters. Freud met Doherty through mutual friend Andrew Parker-Bowles, another Freud subject. “I used to go round to him every Saturday morning from 8.30 to 11.30” Doherty recalled. “He’d spend about two thirds of the time talking”. The painting, one of three separate portraits of Doherty by Freud, was acquired by Doherty directly from the artist. The first involved 100 sittings, the second 85 and the third, a sketch, took 35 sittings. Each sitting lasted for about three hours. Frieze London, running from October 11-15 at Regent’s Park, will bring together emerging and leading galleries spanning 46 countries. Doherty owns developments including shopping centres and hotels in Ireland, Britain, Europe and the US. The painting WAS on loan to the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 2016 to 2021.

With Timeless in full swing at the RDS in Dublin today and tomorrow and a number of upcoming sales of Important Irish art in prospect the busy autumn season continues on its merry way in Ireland. The annual Irish Antique Dealers’ Fair running for the 56th time offers an eclectic blend of contemporary and antique focused exhibitors and is designed to appeal to both young contemporaries and seasoned collectors. With its eye watering results the Freddie Mercury sales at Sotheby’s this month (his Yamaha grand piano made just over €2 million) demonstrated once again the importance of celebrity and in this respect Timeless does not disappoint. Statement pieces on offer include a rare bookcase favoured both by David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld and a 400 year old diamond ring that would once have travelled to the UK along the old Silk Road.
The Memphis Milano Carlton bookcase offered by Acquired was designed by Ettore Sottsass and once graced a Florence palazzo. Its ground breaking form challenged existing rules, something immediately recognised by fashion and rock icons Lagerfeld and Bowie, both of whom had one. It is priced at €17,000. J.W. Weldon will offer a 17th century diamond ring crafted in England, the oldest ring they have ever handled. It is priced at €3,950. Among other rarities is a 9th century French charm from a bracelet which features a cannon and a statue of Napoleon and a folding travelling silver chess set designed in 1972 to commemorate the Fischer-Spassky world championship. “The best of the past is also best for the future”, Garret Weldon, president of the IADA remarked. “Our trade is the original sustainable industry and helps the planet through a reduction in manufacturing and waste”.

Important Irish art sales are in the offing at James Adam on September 27 and at Whytes on October 2. A 1923 oil on panel by Yeats – On a Western Quay – is a highlight at Adams and estimated at €100,000-€150,000. It depicts pilot Michael Gillen, who guided ships along the Garavogue River to the Sligo quayside, and who appears in several paintings and drawings by Yeats. Another top lot with a similar estimate in this auction of 158 lots is Evening by Paul Henry c1924-25. It comes from a private collection in Cork. The sale offers highly collectible art by artists like Louis le Brocquy, Gerard Dillon, William Conor and Rowan Gillespie. Viewing gets underway on September 22 and the catalogue is online.

Still Waters by Sean Keating and The Currach, Kilronan by Gerard Dillon, each estimated at €60,000-€80,000 are highlights at Whyte’s sale of Irish and International art on October 2. Lord George Hell by Sir William Orpen is based on a Regency reprobate, the principal character in Max Beerbohm’s 1896 story The Happy Hypocrite. Hell sets out to woo dancer Jenny Mere with whom he has fallen in love wearing a mask to cover his pock marked face. When he succeeds and removes the mask his face has miraculously healed and become “saintly”, such is the power of love. The story was dramatised into a one act play and in his oil on canvas Orpen set out to create the impression of a late 18th/early 19th century print (€10,000-€15,000). Viewing at Whyte’s gets underway on September 25 and the catalogue is online.
Made to commemorate the Spassky-Fischer world championship this folding travelling silver chess set will feature at Timeless, the Irish Antique Dealers Fair, which takes place in Dublin’s RDS from September 15-17. This is the fourth two day event to be held here by Hibernian Antique Fairs. This time around around 80 dealers will be in attendance.There will be some new faces present at a fair offering a vast range spanning everything from art and antique furniture to jewellery, sculpture, silver, vintage fashion and accessories, glass, porcelain, vintage toys, coins, banknotes, militaria and all sorts of other collectibles.Fairs are the go to place when shopping for antiques. It is very difficult to maintain an antique shop and the cost of overheads has led to closures. Retail is struggling in our era.Robin O’Donnell has been running these events since 1988. The first one was at the former Jurys Hotel on the Ennis Road. Later it moved to the former Limerick Inn also on the Ennis Road then to the South Court Hotel. There is room for expansion at Limerick Racecourse where upper floors could be made available. This is likely to be something that someone younger will have to take on. New blood is needed to sell old stuff. A 17th century diamond ring, the oldest that has ever been handled by Dublin jeweller JW Weldon, will be spotlighted at the show. The English crafted ring, valued at €3,950, pre-dates the mining era and the stones would have been weathered from the earth and polished rather than cut. The diamonds would have been transported to England via the old Silk Road trade route as there was no shipping route.
Among many unusual statement items is a rare first edition Memphis Milano Carlton bookcase to be sold in Ireland for the first time by Acquired. Breaking from all traditional materials and rules of design, the Carlton bookcase, valued at €17,000, was in the collections of fashion and rock icons such as David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld, who were among the first to understand and acknowledge this ground-breaking design. Designed by Ettore Sottsass for the Memphis Milano group once graced Florence palazzo.
