Kate Moss the auction comes up at Christie’s in London next September 25.  Curated by Gert Elfering the sale – titled Kate Moss – The Collection – will present a selection of works in various media.  The roster of artists include Allen Jones, with his work Kate Moss (bronze glitter) 2013, (£20,000-30,000), Annie Liebovitz, Mary McCartney, Craig McDean, Irving Penn, Mario Sorrenti, Sam Taylor-Wood, Juergen Teller, Mario Testino, Ellen von Unwerth, and Albert Watson. Their images are complemented by new, specially commissioned painting and sculpture by Allen Jones, a collage by Sir Peter Blake, a tapestry by Chuck Close, and a sculpture of Kate Moss as a naked angel in 18ct gold by Nick Knight. Photographs predominate, many in exceptionally large sizes.

Philippe Garner, director of photographs at Christie’s commented:  “Kate Moss – The Collection is a very special event at Christie’s this fall, a unique presentation of emblematic works that powerfully capture the very essence of contemporary glamour and style. Gert Elfering has applied his great flair as a curator, to the concept of bringing together a group of outstanding works around the theme of the greatest icon of style of the modern age, Kate Moss.  Gert recognised the appetite of today’s collectors for photographs that confound traditional norms.  And so he has worked with the artists involved to create unique or very limited edition printings in a range of scales that, in certain cases, reach dramatic mural proportions.  He was also keen to include works in other media, reminding us that photography, while central to our image culture, should, in the hands of its great practitioners, be measured and appreciated among the arts in all media”. (Click on any image to enlarge it).

Masterpieces of furniture and decorative arts will feature at Sotheby’s fourth successive sale of Treasures, Princely Taste in London on July 3.  Ranging in date from the 16th to the 20th centuries the sale of just 49 lots  – many commissioned by or made for European rulers and dynasties such as the Medici, Catherine the Great and Napoleon – features highlights such as a magnificent Renaissance table top inlaid with marbles from Roman ruins.  It is estimated at £800,000-1,200,000.  A pair of ivory vases with gilt bronze mounts is estimated at £600,000-1,000,000 and an iconic medal cabinet probably made for Napoleon has an estimate of £300,000-500,000.

Mario Tavella, deputy chairman, Sotheby’s Europe, commented:“Each of the magnificent pieces in this sale meets the definition of a “treasure”. In addition to their desirability relating to the sumptuous materials of which they are composed and the craftsmanship of the greatest artists of their time, these treasures – formerly the preserve of kings, princes and popes – each carry with them a fascinating story. The very few similar examples known today are preserved in the world’s most important museums. Many of the lots presented in July have been in the same collections for centuries and the sale represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire them.”

    UPDATE:  The sale totalled £9,218,850.

THOSE unsure about whether to invest in art or gold might find an answer to their prayers at Christie’s.  How about a solid gold plate designed by Picasso?  Exactly such a unique piece will highlight a new annual sale of Picasso Ceramics just launched at Christie’s in South Kensington.

The auction will take place on June 18 and follows the sale of the Madoura Collection in 2012, which realised over £8 million.

A highlight of the sale is Visage Tourmenté. This 22 carat gold plate is estimated at  £100,000-£150,000.  Picasso created only a limited number of designs for precious metals. Of the 19 designs made in collaboration with celebrated goldsmith François Hugo, 20 were produced in silver and only one in gold. Visage Tourmenté was bought by the current owner directly from François Hugo in the early 1970’s and has not been seen in public for over 40 years.

The auction  features 172 lots and includes unique pieces and works in editions.  Estimates range of £100 to £150,000.

UPDATE:  The gold plate made £193,875 and was the top lot in an auction that was 100 per cent sold.  The sale attracted buyers from around the world.
