    SOTHEBY’S AUTUMN HONG KONG SERIES MARKS 40 YEARS IN ASIA

    A series of sales at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from October 4-8 will mark Sotheby’s 40th anniversary in Asia.  The autumn sale series will be anchored by the 40th anniversary evening sale which will combine 20th century Chinese Art, Contemporary Asian Art and Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian art.  This sale will have the highest total estimate of any comparable sale in Asia.  The sale series will include  Fine Chinese Ceramics and works of art, Fine Chinese paintings, early Ink Masters, 20th century Chinese art,  Contemporary Asian art, Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian paintings, jewellery, watches and wines.

    Selected highlights will be showcased in Jakarta (August 30-31), Shanghai (September 4-5), Beijing (September 7-8), Singapore (September 13-14), Bangkok (September 16-17), Taipei (September 21-22) and Kaohsiung (September 24-25).     A pair of magnificent lifesize lead busts of Andrea Palladio and Inigo Jones will lead Christie’s sale of the collection of Professor Sir Albert Richardson PRA (1880-1964)  in London on September 18 and 19. The collection of the celebrated architect and President of the Royal Academy (1954-1956) comprises around 650 lots.  It includes Old Master and British paintings, watercolours, architectural drawings, English and European furniture, sculpture and objects, garden statuary, books, clocks, musical instruments and Georgian costume.  The busts of Palladio – the most recognised of all classical architects – and Jones – the first classical architect in Britain – are estimated at £400,000-600,000.     A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING AT TWO DAYS OF AUCTIONS MEALY’S

    There is a little bit of everything at two days of auctions at Mealy’s Summer Decorative Art and Design sale in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on July 30 and 31. Around 95% of 1,200 lots will be offered without reserve.  The theme – Summer Thrift – reflects the fact that this is the biggest clearance sale for decades at Mealys
    The highly diverse selection on offer includes 500 lots of furniture and around 200 paintings.  There is as well some Oriental art, ceramics, garden furniture, statuary, clocks, carpets, books and various collectibles.  Estimates begin at 10 euros and rise to 2,000.     HEGARTY’S EVENING AUCTION IN KINSALE ON JULY 21

    AN antique Irish side table is a highlight at Hegarty’s evening auction at Acton’s Hotel, Kinsale, Co. Cork on July 21.  The sale of more than 350 lots features Irish 18th and 19th century furniture including a c1820 Cork secretaire bookcase (5,000-10,000),  an early 19th century Irish console table (4,000-8,000) and an Irish Georgian giltwood mirror (3,000-6,000).  The sale will include a previously unseen sketch by Walter Osborne, 18th and 19th century Irish silver, an antique Russian silver tazza, a pair of Famille Rose vases, a collection of Meissen, a Meiji Preiod ivory okimono and a 19th century Chinese hardstone plaque.     BECKETT’S WORKING DRAFT OF “MURPHY” SELLS FOR £962,500

    Samuel Beckett’s working draft for his first novel “Murphy” sold for £962,500 at Sotheby’s

    in London today. It was bought by the University of Reading.  Interest was global and Sotheby’s described the six handwritten exercise books dating between August 1935 and June 1936 as:  “The most important manuscript of a complete novel by a modern British or Irish writer to appear at auction for many decades”.  It had been estimated at £800,000-1.2 million.

    Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor, University of Reading, commented: “It is important that world-renowned institutions such as the University of Reading can continue to fund access to knowledge and the best resources for researchers and students. The acquisition of Murphy will provide unparalleled opportunities to learn more about one of the greatest writers in living memory, if not all time.”
