LORD UXBRIDGE (1ST MARQUESS OF ANGELESEY): A GEORGE IV 18 CARAT GOLD IRISH FREEDOM BOX
    by Edward Murray, Dublin 1827
    Sold for £100,900

An 18 carat gold Irish presentation box dating to 1827 sold for £100,900 at Bonham’s April Waterloo sale. The Lord Uxbridge (Ist Marquess of Anglesea) presentation gold box was made in 1827 by Edward Murray, Dublin.  The cover of the finely embossed and chased box is set with coat or arms on a matted ground within a frame of rocaille shells and foliage. There are convex plain sides and the base is set with another coat of arms on a plain ground with similar border.

The arms on the cover are those of Field Marshal Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854) who served twice as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.  He was styled Lord Paget between 1784 and 1812 and known as The Earl of Uxbridge between 1812 and 1815. During his first appointment in Ireland he received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin.  The arms on the base are those of Trinity College.

He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d’Erlon’s column at the Battle of Waterloo. At the end of the battle he lost part of one of his legs to a cannonball, leading to a famous brief exchange of words: he was close to Wellington when his leg was hit, and exclaimed, “By God, sir, I’ve lost my leg!” ? to which Wellington replied, “By God, sir, so you have!”  The auction was built around Wellington, Waterloo and the Napoleonic Wars.

FREEDOM BOX THAT CELEBRATES SUPPRESSION OF 1798 REBELLION

    Sunday, April 5th, 2015

An historic and unique silver Freedom Box given  to the High Sheriff of Dublin Frederick Darley (1764-1841) in 1799 the year after the 1798 Rebellion was defeated is to take pride of place next catalogue of London and Dublin based silver dealers L and W Duvallier.  A second box presented to Darley in October 1821, the year he gave the Williamite civic toast to King George IV during one of the King’s frequent visits to Ireland, is also included.  These two boxes have never been on the market before. They were acquired in London last week from a direct descendant of Frederick Darley.

As High Sheriff Darley was one of the main men responsible for suppressing the rebellion in Dublin and the surrounding counties. Sir Jonah Barrington (1760-1834) relates how, on the occasion of an Anti-Union meeting in King’s County:  ” .. Darley the High Sheriff, and Major Rogers (acting of course under the instructions of Dublin Castle) placed two six pounders, charged with grape shot, opposite the Court house where the meeting was being held-bringing England’s logic to bear on the misguided ones who thought they could better know than England, what was for Ireland’s benefit.”

Frederick Darley (1764-1841) architect, builder and stonecutter was joint Dublin city sheriff 1798-9. Elected an alderman in March 1800, he was Lord Mayor in 1808-09, and chief magistrate of the Dublin police from 1814. He was also a wide streets commissioner. Part of the ultra-conservative group that dominated the politics of Dublin Corporation at that time, he was a member of Dublin’s most fashionable Orange Lodge, L.O.L. No.176, founded in 1797. As an Orangeman he was opposed to the various attempts to put through catholic relief legislation during 1805-29.  Frederick Darley was married to Elizabeth Guinness, a sister of the brewery proprietor Arthur Guinness II.  The couple had 20 children.

TREASURES from the collections of Castle Howard, one of Britain’s greatest and most beautiful country houses, will be offered at Sotheby’s in London this summer.  Familiar the world over as the backdrop to the TV drama Brideshead Revisited and Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, the grandeur of the house is echoed by the magnificent collections of antiquities, paintings, furniture and works of art that have graced its interiors for nearly three centuries.  A range of periods and media, from Roman antiquities to Old Master paintings and 17th-century Italian furniture, will be offered at the Old Masters and Treasures sales in London on July 8.  The combined estimate is more than £10 million.

The Hon. Nicholas Howard said: “I am privileged to be able to say that Castle Howard is my family’s heritage and has been since it was built over 300 years ago. With that privilege comes the responsibility of ownership, and the Trustees’ unanimous decision to hold this sale is the exercise of that responsibility. If the sale helps to secure that heritage as the house moves into its fourth century then it will have achieved its goal. To this end, we have selected for sale at Sotheby’s a small number of works which, while of great intrinsic interest, have been carefully chosen so as not to detract from the overall integrity of the collection.”

The Hon. Simon Howard added: “Running Castle Howard for the last 30 years has been an immense privilege. Now, as a new chapter in its history opens, the sales that we are planning at Sotheby’s will make an important contribution to the long term future of the Castle Howard estate and collections.”

Henry Wyndham, Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe commented: “The collections at Castle Howard chart two millennia of history and 300 years of collecting, and rank among the finest private art collections in the world. The carefully selected group of works to be auctioned this summer is testament to the taste of a series of enlightened art patrons, starting with the visionary 3rd Earl of Carlisle, and continuing through his Romanophile son, Henry, collector of antiquities and Venetian vedute, to his diplomat grandson Frederick, 5th Earl of Carlisle, who is thought by many to have been the most refined English collector of the period around 1800.”
