    IRISH DINING TABLE SELLS FOR 70,000 AT COURTOWN AUCTION

    An impressive Irish Gillingtons style c1820 mahogany dining table sold for two times its top estimate at the James Adam sale of contents from Courtown House, Kilcock, Co. Kildare today  It made a hammer price of 70,000 over an estimate of 25,000-35,000. Attributed to Gillingtons of Dublin the table is designed to be used either as a single piece or as three separate tables.  It can be traced back to the original Courtown House contents auction in 1963.  The table is on quadruped pillar supports.   Gillingtons were a Dublin firm of cabinet makers in the early years of the 19th century. The table had been estimated at 25,000-35,000.
    Also from the dining room at Courtown House is a rare pair of George III mahogany dining room pedestals after a design by Gillows. sold for 20,300 and a pair of gilt torcheres by del Vecchio of Dublin sold for 28,000.  A gilt wood table attributed to the English maker Matthias Locke sold for 20,000.  The table was originally at Crton House.

    KIPPENBERGER AND KOONS FROM TASCHEN AT CHRISTIE’S

    Masterworks by Martin Kippenberger and Jeff Koons from the collection of renowned publisher and art collector, Benedikt Taschen come up at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art evening sale in New York on May 13.   Leaders of the New York and Cologne art scenes the controversial and ambitious artists first met in Cologne in 1986, where Taschen’s publishing empire was founded a few years earlier. Through Untitled and Louis XIV, Kippenberger and Koons, who possessed strong mutual respect for one another, were both taking the guise of art history to portray themselves, the first one as the greatest of all 20th century painters, Pablo Picasso; the second, as the royal figure of the ‘Sun King’ Louis XIV.

    DESIGN AND ART AT DE VERES DUBLIN AUCTION

    The design and art auction at de Veres at Kildare St. in Dublin on April 28 offers a mix of 20th  century design furniture including a number of Danish pieces.  The sale will also include about 40 lots of Irish art, among them several larger canvasses such as Brian Bourke’s diptych entitled East Manhattan and John Shinnors’ Black Skirt Still Life.     A PERFECT 100 CARAT DIAMOND MAKES $22.1 MILLION

    An extraordinary 100.20-carat ‘Perfect Diamond’ in a classic Emerald-cut sold for $22.1 million at Sotheby’s NewYork headquarters. Diamonds of this exceptional quality – D color and Internally Flawless clarity – are incredibly rare, and are considered ‘perfect’.  What distinguishes the present example within this rarefied league is its beautiful shape: it is the largest perfect diamond with a classic Emerald-cut ever to be sold at auction.

    Only six perfect diamonds weighing over 100 carats have sold at auction in the last 25 years.  The sale of magnificent jewels totaled $65.1 million. Ten jewels sold for more than $1 million, including four sold to online bidders.

    HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHS AND MAPS OF CHINA

    A series of rare photographs and maps of China will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s sale of Travel, Atlases, Maps and Natural History in London on April 30.  Created nearly 150 years ago, they include some of the earliest images of the country, bringing to light a historic China and illuminating a landscape now changed beyond recognition.  Highlights include: a rare large-scale historic Chinese woodcut map of Beijing; 60 photographs of 1870s Xiamen; 100 of 1870’s Ningbo and over 100 of 1860’s Beijing.

    Photographs of historic China are highly desired by collectors around the globe.  The auction record for any historic photographs of the region currently stands at £349,250 for a rare album of photographs by John Thomson titled Foochow and the River Min which sold at Sotheby’s on 15 November 2012.  One of an edition of only 46, this album was offered for sale by descendants of the original tea-merchant owner, Oliver Latham, who won the album in a pigeon match in Foochow in April 1873.

    GREAT COLLECTION OF TIFFANY AT SOTHEBY’S NEW YORK

    One of the greatest collections of Tiffany and prewar design to appear at auction will come up at Sotheby’s in New York on May 19.  The sale  of the Warshawsky collection, assembled by the Chicago based Ray Warshawsky from the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s, features works of rich quality and luminosity of colour.  He assembled an encyclopedic collection of Tiffany which spans every artistic discipline of the firms production.

    UPDATE: The Collection totalled $7,951,125 with 98.6% of all lots sold. Fierce demand for the collection’s many treasures drove more than three-quarters of all 138 lots on offer to exceed their pre-sale high estimates.

    MICHAEL FLATLEY: THE LORD OF THE ART AUCTION SALESROOM

    The Power by Michael Flatley sold for 77,500 at hammer.

    Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley became the Lord of the Art Auction Salesroom in Dublin tonight when two of his artworks – created by tap dancing on canvas – sold for 77,500 and 44,000 respectively.

    The artworks attracted competitive bidding on the phone, over the internet and in the room at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International Art Auction at the RDS.

    The Power, just under six feet square, made 77,500 over an estimate of 70,000-90,000 and was bought by an international buyer. An Irish purchaser acquired Flight of the Quetzal, which sold for 44,000 over an estimate of 40,000-50,000.  These are hammer prices.

    The decision to hold a viewing in London for this sale proved wise, as UK bidders competed in numbers for the Irish and international art on offer.

    PRE-RAPHAELITE PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS AT CHRISTIE’S

    Works by Rosetti, Burne-Jones, Poynter and Leighton are among a stellar collection of Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian drawings and paintings at Christie’s in London on June 16.  They are from one of the very best collections in private hands with museum-quality works, some of which have not been seen for decades.

    The collection features 45 works and is expected to realise in the region of £2 million. One of eight works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), Beatrice: A Portrait of Jane Morris (£700,000-1 million) leads the group.  Interest in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood has been stimulated by the 2012 exhibition at The Tate.

    IMPRESSIVE DINING TABLE AT COURTOWN HOUSE AUCTION

    An impressive Gillingtons style c1820 mahogany dining table is one of a number of prime antique furniture lots at the James Adam house contents sale at Courtown House, Kilcock, Co. Kildare on April 22.   Attributed to Gillingtons of Dublin the table – on quadruped pillar supports – is designed to be used either as a single entity or three stand alone tables. It can be traced back to the original Courtown House contents auction in 1963.  Gillingtons were a Dublin firm of cabinet makers in the early years of the 19th century. The table is estimated at 25,000-35,000.
    Also from the dining room at Courtown House is a rare pair of George III mahogany dining room pedestals after a design by Gillows.  The restrained neo-classical urns on Roman pedestals correspond closely to a design by Gillows of 1788.  The lidded urns with bell finials and lead linings are on a square base with a single panel door and shelved interior. They were also in the 1963 catalogue. It is rare to come across an intact pair so this lot is estimated at 15,000-20,000.

    BACON, FREUD AND PETER DOIG AT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK

    Masterpieces by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Peter Doig will feature at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art evening auctions in New York on May  11 and 13.  Bacon’s Portrait of Henrietta Moraes is one of the most seductive portraits of a woman he ever made. It will be presented alongside Lucian Freud’s Benefits Supervisor Resting, a masterful reworking of the traditional theme of the nude.  This is one of Freud’s most famous and iconic paintings.

    An icon of contemporary painting, Peter Doig’s Swamped conjures an extraordinary sense of atmosphere around a single solitary canoe. Rendered using a vast array of painterly techniques and processes, Swamped encapsulates the inimitable approach has come to define Doig’s contribution to the history of painting.
