World War II medals awarded to Archdeacon Tom Duggan – the first chaplain to be awarded a Military Cross in the Second World War – come up at Woodwards in Cork on July 1 at 6 pm. A chaplain in Flanders during the First World War – where he was taken prisoner in 1918 – Tom Duggan joined up again at the outbreak of the Secord World War in 1939. His Military Cross, OBE breast badge and war medals from 1939-45 are at Woodwards. He taught at St. Finbarr’s seminary in Cork between the wars and ended up as a missionary in Peru . He died in 1961 at the age of 71 and his funeral was attended by Bishop Lucey of Cork and Cardinal Cushing of Boston.
A book about Archdeacon Duggan by Dr. Carthach McCarthy was published by Blackwater Press in 1994. The auction is on the internet and Woodwards reckon the set could make up to 5,000.
