    PISTOLS GIFTED BY NAPOLEON AT SOTHEBY’S TREASURES SALE

    A  pair of child sized pistols – believed to be parting gifts from Napoleon I to his three year old son titled King of Rome at birth – is one of the more unusual lots at Sotheby’s Treasures sale in London on July 8.

    Created by celebrated gunsmith Jean Lepage the pistols are encrusted and inlaid with gold and emblazoned with Napoleonic symbolism, such as the capitalised N and the Imperial eagle, marking them as an important Imperial gift. Dated 1814 they are estimated at £800,000-1.2 million.

    Napoleon abdicated in April 1814, was forced into exile on the island of Elba, but returned triumphantly only to be decisively defeated at the Battle of Waterloo by the Duke of Wellington on June 18, 1815. He was exiled to the Atlantic island of St Helena, where he died in 1821.

    BELLOTTO, RUBENS, GAINSBOROUGH, GUARDI AT CHRISTIE’S

    Works by Bellotto, Rubens, Gainsborough, Guardi and Breughel the Younger – including property from the Alfred Beit Foundation in Ireland – will lead Christie’s Old Master and British Paintings evening sale in London on July 9.  Many of the highlights have not been seen on the market for generations. A masterpiece by Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780), Dresden from the right bank of the Elbe above the Augustus Bridge,  is one of the last great views of the city by the artist still in private hands (£8-12 million). There are six paintings from The Alfred Beit Foundation with two superb panels by Rubens – Head of a bearded man (£2-3 million), and Venus and Jupiter (£1.2-1.8 million); and one of the greatest Kermesse scenes by David Teniers the Younger (£1.2-1.8 million).

    Other sale highlights are a portrait of Sir Richard Brooke, 5th Bt. by Thomas Gainsborough, which has never been on the market before; A coastal landscape with fisherfolk by Richard Parkes Bonington (£2-3 million); four works by Pieter Brueghel the Younger;  seven Dutch paintings from the Cunningham collection, led by an exquisite Still-Life by Jan Davidsz de Heem (£1.5-2.5 million); Christ on the Cross by El Greco and studio  (£1-1.5 million); Hermes entertained by Calypso by Jacob Jordaens (£600,000 – 800,000) and Ruins of the old church at Muiderberg by Jacob van Ruisdael (£500,000-800,000)

    UPDATE: On June 12 The Irish Times reported that Russborough House received an export licence for another Rubens entitled Portrait of a Monk, bust length. The Alfred Beit Foundation declined to comment and it is not known whether the work has yet been sold.

    UPDATE:  The Beit Paintings have been withdrawn from the auction following a request from the Beit Foundation.

    COLLECTIBLES AT JAMES ADAM SUNDAY INTERIORS SALE

    A late 19th century French gilt bronze encriers  in the Louis XV style is just one of many collectible objects at the James Adam Sunday Interiors sale in Dublin on June 14.  By Maison Millet it is estimated at 1.500-2,500. A pair of Dublin silver George III loving cups by Matthew West, 1790, is estimated at 3,000-5,000 and a 16th century Japanese Shino Ware vase has an estimate of 1,500-2,500. The 500 lot sale of fine period furniture, silver, paintings and other decorative arts is now on view, and is particularly strong in furniture.  Here is a small selection.  The catalogue is online.

    Edgar Degas’ Petite danseuse de quatorze ans, comes up at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale in London on June 24.  One of only a handful of bronze casts remaining in private hands it is estimated at £10-15 million. Most are housed in major museum collections, including Tate, London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Museé d’Orsay, Paris.

    Helena Newman, Sotheby’s Co-Head of Impressionist & Modern Art Worldwide said:“Petite danseuse de quatorze ans is Edgar Degas’ most important and iconic sculpture.  The artist’s ambitious and highly innovative work marks the pinnacle of his achievements as a sculptor, and its forthcoming sale represents a rare opportunity to acquire an icon of Impressionist art.”

    The art historian Richard Kendall, co-curator of the Royal Academy’s exhibition Degas and the Ballet wrote: “Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen is among the three or four most celebrated sculptures of the modern age.  Along with Rodin’s The Kiss and the same artist’s The Thinker, and perhaps Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty, Degas’s statuette of a slender young ballet dancer has become recognisable to millions and admired throughout the world.”

    A SIGNED BEATLES 1964 UK TOUR PROGRAMME AT WHYTE’S

    A 1964 signed Beatles tour programme is one of many delights at Whyte’s Eclectic Collector sale in Dublin on June 13.  It is estimated at 4,500-5,000. The sale includes Robert Freeman’s photograph of The Beatles used for the Rubber Soul album sleeve, signed by Freeman and numbered 5/75. It is estimated at 300-500. A limited edition Duran Duran concert poster has an estimate of 100-150 and is one of 65 lots of rock, pop and cinema memorabilia.

    There is a huge selection of postcards used by Peter Holder to illustration period scenes in Ireland for film productions.  The sale also features sporting treasures and much to interest collectors. It is now on view at Molesworth St. in Dublin.

    UPDATE:  The sale grossed 220,000 with 80% of lots sold. The collection of postcards made over €22,000 and a collection of coins, estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 made over 40,000 thanks to spirited bidding from British and American collectors and dealers who had specially travelled to the saleroom.

    BACON’S STUDY FOR A POPE 1 AT SOTHEBY’S

    Francis Bacon’s Study for a Pope I – estimated at £25-35 million – will lead Sotheby’s contemporary art auction in London on July 1.  The auction is poised to become London’s highest value sale of contemporary art with a pre-sale estimate of  £143.2 million to £204.6 million. The 59 lot sale will include the most important collection of Andy Warhol dollar paintings in private hands.

    Bacon was obsessed with the Velazquez Portrait of Pope Innocent X.  He created his Study for a Pope I for his breakthrough retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1962. It was in the collection of Gunter Sachs for 40 years and was sold at auction for £10 million in 2005, a record price for a work of Bacon at the time.

    LETTERS FROM FREUD TO SPENDER AT SOTHEBY’S

    Never before seen letters from a teenage Lucian Freud to his friend the poet Stephen Spender come up at Sotheby’s contemporary art day auction in London on July 2. Ten unpublished letters written by the artist to the famous poet and critic Stephen Spender (1909–1995) have emerged from the Spender family collection after 70 years.

    Populated by drawings and watercolour paintings, one letter shows a man pulling a miniature horse on a lead, while in another, a figure balances on the head of a flying bird and a small man rides a horse atop an ear.

    Dating from 1939-42 while Freud was studying under the tutelage of  Cedric Morris at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Essex they are estimated at £28,000-42,000.

    LAVERY, HENRY AND LEECH AT BONHAMS THIS WEEK

    Works by Sir John Lavery, Paul Henry and William John Leech will feature at Bonhams sale of Modern British and Irish art in London on June 10.  Moonlight – the Bridge by Lavery is estimated at £25,000-35,000 while The Pool in the Bog by Paul Henry has an estimate of £15,000-20,000.  Les Enfants and les Ombres by William John Leech is estimated at £8,000-12,000.

    A brace of paintings by Walter Osborne, A boy on a donkey in a landscape and Joe the Swineherd come up at Bonhams sale of 19th century European, Victorian and British Impressionist Art in London on June 23.   Bonhams sale of Old Master Paintings in London on July 8 will include A Landscape Based on Dawson Grove, Co. Monaghan with the Artist Sketching by William Ashford.

    UPDATE:  William John Leech’s Les Enfants et les Ombres sold for £21,250 and The Bishop’s Castle Tearooms by Sir John Lavery sold for £37,500 over an estimate of £30,000-50,000.
