    DELACROIX LA LIBERTE SKETCH IN OIL AT CHRISTIE’S

    EUGÈNE DELACROIX (FRENCH, 1798-1863), Le 28 juillet – la liberté guidant le peuple, 1830,

    Le 28 juillet – la liberté guidant le peuple, 1830 by Eugène Delacroix will lead Christie’s Classic Week 19th Century European & Orientalist Art auction in London on December 14.. This autographed painting is the only known sketch in oil that fully outlines the intended final composition for Delacroix’s masterpiece La liberté guidant le peuple, in the collection of the Louvre in Paris. It is estimated at £700,000-1,000,000.

    Providing a rare insight into Delacroix’s creative process, the fast and fluid lines of the final composition takes form with the figure of Liberty at the centre, surrounded by the fallen men who populate the primary plane. A pivotal figure, looking up in hope and admiration, is present to the left in both the preparatory and the final painting.

    LANDSCAPE BY GEORGE BARRET AT ADAMS COUNTRY HOUSE SALE

    A particularly fine landscape by George Barret, a mirror by John and Francis Booker, an Irish armorial side table, a Killarney davenport and a Brussels tapestry are among the top lots at the annual James Adam Country House Collections sale in Co. Louth on October 10.
    The highest estimated lot of A Mountainous Wooded River Landscape and Waterfall and Three Figures by George Barret (c1728-1784) is estimated at 200,000. Adams say it was most likely painted in Ireland before Barret’s move to London in 1763. An Irish Georgian giltwood pier mirror by the Booker Brothers still has its makers label attached and is estimated at 50,000. An Irish armorial side table dates to about 1850 and has an estimate of 20,000, as has a large Killarney davenport.
    A Wooded Landscape by Solomon Delane (1727-1812) is possibly of Tuscany and estimated at 40,000. There is a portrait of Frederick the Great of Prussia (3,000) and the 17th/18th Brussels tapesty of the Baptism of Clovis, often referred to as the first Christian King of France,  is large and estimated at 10,000.  A pair of compact George II giltwood mirrors attributed to Benjamin Goodison is estimated at 6,000.  The same model of mirror was illustrated in Buckingham Palace in a 1927 edition of Country Life.

    There is a Victorian sideboard from the Cornish house where Daphne du Maurier lived for decades and inspired her novel Rebecca. It is estimated at 10,000. There is a similar estimate on a Great Irish Deer set of antlers.  The auction is at Townley Hall near Drogheda. A section of nearly 200 lots at the end of the catalogue is being offered online and by written bids only.  These include the Moyne collection of miniatures, antiquarian prints and books. They will come up at a timed internet auction which will run to 6 p.m. on October 11.

    20TH CENTURY DESIGN AND IRISH ART AT DE VERES

    Classic 20th century and contemporary design furniture will come under the hammer at de Veres in Dublin on October 15.  Lots on offer range from Danish and Italian design furniture from the 1960’s to the contemporary Nomos table designed by Sir Norman Foster which is estimated at 1,400-1,800. The auction will feature work from designers including Arne Vodder,  Osvaldo Borsani and Philippe Starck.  Estimates for a selection that includes tables, chairs, sideboards, lamps, cocktail cabinets, Murano glass and mirrors are reasonable.

    There is Irish art by Louis le Brocquy, Hughie O’Donoghue, Robert Ballagh, Patrick Scott, Felim Egan, Robert Ballagh and others among the 140 lots on offer.  The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

    HOCKNEY’S AMERICAN LANDSCAPE MADE £6 MILLION

    David Hockney – 15 Canvas Study of the Grand Canyon (1998)

    AN American landscape by David Hockney’s sold for £6 million at Sotheby’s in London on October. 5.  Considered one of the greatest Hockney landscapes in private hands 15 Canvas Study of the Grand Canyon (1998) was painted in preparation for A Bigger Grand Canyon, the seven and a half metre wide masterpiece housed in the National Gallery of Australia.

    The painting’s importance is underlined by its inclusion in two of the most important exhibitions of the artist’s career, including his major 1999 exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and his blockbuster retrospective in London at Tate Britain earlier this year.

    The enthusiasm for Hockney tonight was echoed elsewhere in the sale, with a succession of strong prices for other British artists, including Cecily Brown, Hurvin Anderson, Cecily Brown, Antony Gormley and Howard Hodgkin.  The Contemporary art evening sale brought in £18.4 million.

    20th CENTURY DESIGN AT CHRISTIE’S

    Furniture, lighting, sculpture, ceramics, glass and metalwork by leading designers of the last 120 years will come up at three sales at Christie’s in London on October 18.  Design; Historical Design and the private collection of couturier Wolfgang Joop will feature sought after works by British, European and Asian designers, spanning Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau to mid-century Italian and Nordic design.  In addition there will be 16 unique creations by contemporary Asian designers.  Here is a small selection:

    NEW WORLD RECORD FOR CHINESE CERAMIC

    Ru guanyao brush washer from the Northern Song Dynasty.

    There was a new world auction record for Chinese ceramics at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong today when a Ru Guanyao brush washer sold for £28.2 million.  The 900 year old vessel was bought by an anonymous purchaser.

    Ru guanyao, the court ware of the late Northern Song (960-1127), was commissioned by the imperial court and is the most revered of the Five Great Kilns. Its quasi mythical status over the millennium can be attributed to its short-lived production period, generally believed to not have exceeded twenty years.

    The brush washer, formerly in the collection of the Chang Foundation in the Hongxi Museum, Taipei, is a pre-eminent example of Ru guanyao and incarnates to perfection the ware’s revered qualities. While seemingly small and unobtrusive, these understated aesthetics reflect the calibre and meticulousness of its craftsmanship, a quiet metaphor of Chinese philosophy celebrated by erudite connoisseurs and scholars throughout time. Measuring 13cm in diameter, the washer is one of only four known heirloom Ru wares in private hands.

    A RARITY BY PHIL LYNOTT AND THIN LIZZY AT FONSIE MEALY

    THE FARMER by Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy

    From Phil Lynott to J.  P. Dunleavy to the Thunder and Lightning final of 1939  Fonsie Mealys rare book sale in Kilkenny on October 3 is brimful of interest.  Lot 471 is an archive of records, posters and programmes relating to Phil Linnott and Thin Lizzy which includes their first LP, The Farmer (1,000-1,500).

    A first UK edition of The Ginger Man by the recently deceased J,.P. Dunleavy is estimated at 150-220 and the programme for the 1939 final in which Kilkenny beat Cork is estimated at 300-400.   Around 800 lots will come under the hammer.

    WEST OF IRELAND BOG BY PAUL HENRY AT WHYTE’S

    West of Ireland Bog by Paul Henry (1876-1958)(80,000-100,000)  UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR 100,000 AT HAMMER

    Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, Sir John Lavery and Walter Osborne all feature at Whyte’s sale of Irish and International art at the RDS in Dublin this evening. More contemporary work from highly collectible artists like John Shinnors, Tony O’Malley, William Crozier and John Behan will feature too.

    There is a newly discovered pencil and watercolour drawing by Sir William Orpen from the estate of Judge Desmond Windle. On the Hill of Howth depicts a sitter believed to be Orpen’s daughter Mary and is estimated at 35,000-50,000.  West of Ireland Bog by Paul Henry is estimated at 80,000-100,000 and there are two lots by Jack B. Yeats, Against the Stream 1945 (60,000-80,000) and Sea Fog 1909 (8,000-12,000). There is sculpture by F.E. McWilliam and  an oil of West Cork, 1994 by William Crozier (10,000-15,000).  In total no less than 150 artists are represented among the 188 lots on the catalogue.

    UPDATE: Good prices were realised and the auction grossed just under one million.

    YOKO ONO’S BASQUIAT AT SOTHEBY’S

    Jean Michel Basquiat – Cabra  UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR $11 MILLION

    Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Cabra from the collection of Yoko Ono comes up at Sotheby’s Contemporary art evening sale in New York on November 16.  The 1981-82 work, measuring 60 1/4 by 60 1/4 inches, is estimated to bring $9/12 million. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Spirit Foundations, founded by Yoko Ono and John Lennon, in the 1970’s.

    Yoko Ono commented:  “I have had the pleasure of owning and living with this masterwork for over two decades. The time has come for it to find a new home, and I am delighted that part of the sale proceeds will benefit the foundation I established years ago with the intention of bringing peace and tolerance to the world.”

    Executed at a time when Basquiat was exploring his Haitian and Puerto Rican roots, and becoming increasingly interested in the power of black athletes Cabra is from a group of paintings inspired by boxing icons including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Jersey Joe Walcott.   Cabra refers to the evening in 1970 when Muhammad Ali – the greatest of all time – knocked out revered heavy-weight fighter Oscar Bonavena known as ‘The Bull’. The iconic boxing ring, the hieroglyphic ‘TKO’ above the bull’s skull and, finally, the clever play on words – Cabra is Spanish for ‘goat’ or GOAT, shorthand for the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali – all add to this moving painting of one of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s long-time heroes.

    Spirit Foundations was founded in 1978 to promote a message of social advancement through collective peace and tolerance. Devotedly carried on after John Lennon’s passing in 1980, Spirit Foundations remains a charitable organization that works as an agent of positive social change
