A Modernist vision of a Trieste fishing boat by Egon Schiele comes to auction for the first time at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern art evening sale in London on February 26. Painted in 1912, Triestiner Fischerboot (Trieste Fishing Boat) holds a unique position in Schiele’s oeuvre. It was created in the aftermath of what was arguably the most tumultuous and life-changing experience for the artist. Recently released from a brief period of incarceration in Neulengbach in Austria, and rejected by the local community there, Schiele’s visit to Trieste in 1912 was prompted by a desire to escape memories of the recent past, and relive memories of earlier visits shared with his sister Gerti in 1907 and 1908.
It also prompted an unleashing of radical new artistic expression. In a year of iconoclastic developments across Europe that forever altered the direction of twentieth-century art, from Cubism, Orphism and Futurism to Expressionism, Schiele sought to explore in oil a thoroughly modernist treatment of colour, surface, pattern, texture and form. The painting is estimated at £6,000,000-8,000,000.
In the summer of the preceding year Schiele and the model Wally Neuzil had settled in Neulengbach seeking inspiration but Schiele’s bohemian lifestyle scandalised his conservative neighbours. The couple found themselves in a precarious position when a retired naval officer’s daughter asked for their help to run away and although they returned the girl to her parents, the artist was arrested and placed on trial. The experience and particular loss of freedom it entailed was to have a marked effect on Schiele’s life and work.
A portrait of Mrs. Gertrude Coutts by Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) is stamped “B. Kellerman Painters Supplies, New York”. It measures 28′ x 20′ and is estimated at 4,000-8,000. Among the furniture is a pair of Irish rosewood fold over card tables c1820 and an 18th century Irish mahogany hunt table. There is an early 20th century Arts and Crafts silver goblet and a collection of jewellery.

Diamonds, sapphires, pearls, peridots, amethysts and all sort of coloured stones feature in a jewellery selection that includes rings, bracelets, brooches, pendants, earrings and watches in various styles and across all price ranges. Catherine Deneuve’s wardrobe, including many one off pieces made by Yves St. Laurent, will be sold by Christie’s in Paris on January 24. Now 75 the French actress is selling her property n Normandy where the clothes are kept. The French actor was muse to Laurent for many years. At the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of his career in 2002 she told him: “My most beautiful love affair is with you”.
Around 300 lots are to be sold, half at Christie’s in Paris and the rest in an online auction. There are evening dresses worn by Deneuve in Cannes, Hollywood and Venice as well as trench coats and colourful dress suits. The online only sale will offer a larger number of lots along with some cocktail dresses. The beaded evening dress featured here was exhibited at the Met in New York in 1993. Deneuve wore the dress at a ceremony in 1969 where she met Alfred Hitchcock, Philippe Noiret and Francois Truffaut. Deneuve wore the gold lurex dress featured here to the 2000 Oscars ceremony for the nomination of Est-West by Regis Wargnier in the Best International Film category.
UPDATE: The live auction of the wardrobe of Catherine Deneuve designed by Yves Saint Laurent achieved a total of $1,025,581 and sell-through rates of 100%. The interest in the sale was so immense that 90% of all 129 lots sold multiple times above their pre-sale estimates. The auction lasted 5 hours, witnessing fierce competition from around the globe.

A founder of the Irish Picture Postcard Society Seamus Kearns (1929-2014) began collecting stamps in the 1930’s and fell in love with old postcards in the 1950’s when he started amassing this collection. He provided many exhibitions around the country including a show at the Guinness Hopstore in 1994. The main value is in Irish topographical and historical Irish cards. There are views of villages and towns from the early 1900’s to the 1950’s. Historic events like the 1916 Rising are covered. Every county is represented with views which show a transition from muddy roads and horse drawn vehicles to tarmac, trams, buses and motor cars. Auction estimates range from 50 to 3,000. The collection has been broken up into 500 lots with a total estimated value of 50,000-70,000. The number of cards per lot varies from ten to over 3,000. A collection of 110 cards of Belfast is estimated at 50, a collection of Irish advertising cards is estimated at 3,000. The catalogue is online and the sale can be viewed at Whyte’s from January 23.

Works by James Malton and Sir William Orpen are amongst the Irish lots at Sotheby’s upcoming sale The Fine Art Society: 142 years on New Bond Street next February 5. Malton’s View of the Provost’s House and Trinity College, Dublin is estimated at £20,000-30,000. The watercolour with pen and ink is signed and dated 1796.
Orpen’s oil of canvas of Miss Dorothy Stiles, a keen golfer who grew up in the Scots medical world, has an estimate of £40,000-60,000. It was commissioned by her parents for her 21st birthday. Dorothy is the only person to have been captain of Gullane Ladies Golf Club in East Lothian twice.

A silver presentation given to Gustav Wilhelm Wolff (1834-1913), one of the founders of the Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, comes up at an auction in Surrey next February 27. Presented in 1911, a year before Titanic set sail from the shipyard, it comes up at Catherine Southon’s sale at Farleigh Court Golf Club at Selsdon in England. Wolff served as a Belfast Harbour Commissioner and founded Belfast Ropeworks in the early 1870’s. Like Edward Harland he served as a member of parliament for Belfast East from 1892 to 1910. In 1911 he was awarded the freedom of Belfast.
UPDATE: The silver casket sold for £9,728 over a top estimate of £3,000.
