    A RECORD BREAKING NIGHT FOR BRITISH ART

    With participants from 46 countries there were records for 11 British artists at Part 1 of the sale of the David Bowie Collection at Sotheby’s.  The first session, a white glove sale in which every lot found a buyer in a record breaking night for British art,  doubled the high estimate and totalled  £24.3 million.

    There were artists records for Frank Auerbach, Peter Lanyon, Bernard Leach, Winifred Nicholson, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Henry Lamb, Harold Gilman, Ivon Hitchens, Kenneth Armitage, Bryan Wynter, Patrick Caulfield and Meret Oppenheim.  Over the course of the 10-day pre-sale exhibition in London, more than 37,000 people came to Sotheby’s to view the collection, making for the best attended pre-sale exhibition London has ever witnessed.  The top lot of the evening was Air Power 1984 by Jean Michel Basquiat which made £7.1 million.

    Bowie famously said of the Frank Auerbach painting illustrated left: “My God, yeah!  I want to sound like that looks”. 

    Sleep Sound by Jack B. Yeats sold for £233,000 over a top estimate of £180,000 and Image of James Joyce by Louis le Brocquy sold for £68,750 over a top estimate of £15,000.

    BOWIE COLLECTION IS INSTRUCTIVE

    David Bowie‘s collection of a wide variety of contemporary art and design is instructive insofar as it shows that in order to get it you must engage with it. An avid and genuine collector he was deeply involved with and sustained by art and design.  “I use it”  he explained once. “It can change the way I feel in the mornings”.
    His collection spans post-war British avant grade painting centred on St. Ives to German Expressionism and works created in the aftermath of the first democratic elections in South Africa..  It includes a “spin” painting he made in collaboration with Damien Hirst, an altarpiece by the Renaissance master Tintoretto and works by 20th century Modern British masters like David Bomberg, Stanley Spencer, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff.  There is a painting by Jack B. Yeats entitled Sleep Sound.
    Bowie/Collector is a sale in three parts. It will begin with an evening sale of modern and contemporary art on November 10.  There  will be a day auction of art the following morning and a design sale that afternoon.  All the catalogues are online.

    SOME LOTS TO CREATE INTERNATIONAL INTEREST AT FONSIE MEALY

    A pair of Roman scenes of The Coliseum and the Pantheon are among a number of lots likely to create international interest at Fonsie Mealy’s two day Chatsworth fine art sale in Castlecomer on November 15 and 16.  The oils on canvas, in carved gilt wood frames, are estimated at 20,000-30,000. There are two stained glass panels from the Clarke Studios commissioned around 1900 by the Pierce family of Wexford for the portico of their home – King David and the Creation is estimated at 5,000-7,000 and a panel depicting the four provinces of Ireland is estimated at 1,000-1,500.

    Vintage barn finds include a 1914 Talbot Invincible (17,000-22,000) and a 1939 Vauxhall (3,500-5,000).  Both are in need of extensive restoration.  A brougham by Robson of Belfast is estimated at 4,000-5,000.

    THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN AT CHRISTIE’S

    The Monarch of the Glen  by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, R.A. (1802-1873) will lead the Christie’s Old Master evening sale on  December 8.  This major highlight of Classic Week comes at the culmination of Christie’s 250th anniversary year.  The c1849-51 work will feature alongside important works by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Bernardo Bellotto and Edward Lear. The auction will mark the fourth occasion that The Monarch of the Glen has commanded Christie’s saleroom, having last been offered precisely a century ago, in 1916. The painting is one of the most celebrated works of British art. It was originally commissioned in 1849 for the Refreshment Room in the House of Lords.

    John Stainton, Deputy Chairman of Christie’s Old Master and British Paintings Department said: “Following this year’s record-breaking Old Master sales which include Rubens’s ‘Lot and his Daughters’ and, via private treaty, two Rembrandt Portraits and the iconic ‘Armada Portrait’, there is perhaps no more fitting a conclusion to our 250th anniversary than the return of Sir Edwin Landseer’s ‘The Monarch of the Glen’ to Christie’s King Street. The sales in 1884 and 1892, prompted Landseer to become known as the ‘king of the salerooms’ and in 2016 Landseer’s masterpiece will lead Christie’s December Classic Week.”

    UPDATE: THE PAINTING HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM AUCTION. It is now the subject of a fundraising campaign by the National Galleries of Scotland. Diageo, which owns the work, has agreed to gift half the £8 million value, the NGS has until mid March to raise the remaining £4 million

    CHINA IN PRINT AND ON PAPER AT SOTHEBY’S

    Rare Chinese and European books, maps, photographs and manuscripts will come up at Sotheby’s in London on November 7, during the annual Asian Art in London from November 3-12.  China in Print and on Paper reveals the rich history of cartography, exploration, trade and diplomacy between China and the West for over half a millennium.  At the heart of the auction are two magnificent single-owner collections formed over many years by private collectors Bernard Hanotiau in Belgium, and Floyd Sully in Canada.  The Hanotiau library reveals the rich history of exploration and cultural and political exchange between China and the West from the fifteenth to twentieth century in over 180 lots of books, atlases and early photographs. The Sully collection comprises over fifty lots of rare maps, photographs, illustrated texts, drawings and watercolours. Star lots include the  “Blue Map” created during the Qing dynast which is estimated at £80,000-120,000.

    MONET, PICASSO AND KANDINSKY TO LEAD CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK SALE

    Monet, Picasso and Kandinsky will lead Christie’s auction of Impressionist and Modern Art in New York on November 16.   The evening sale of 49 works by the major artists of the era is expected to achieve more than $200 million.

    Brooke Lampley, Christie’s Head of Impressionist and Modern Art, New York, remarked: “This sale constitutes an exceptional line-up of masterpieces and fresh to market gems perfectly suited to collectors’ taste. From Monet to Kandinsky, Cézanne to Matisse, and a great range of works by Picasso, all of the sought after artists of the period are well represented in this sale, with offerings at every price level.”

    O’DONOVAN OLYMPIC ROWING MEDAL HEROES FEATURE IN ART AUCTION

    Olympic medal heroes Gary and Paul O’Donovan feature in Morgan O’Driscoll’s current online auction of affordable Irish art which runs until November 7.  A painting of the brothers rowing at Rio by artist Charles Mountjoy – almost as quick off the mark as the Cork brothers – is estimated at 500-700.     SHORTLIST FOR SAVILLS ART PRIZE ANNOUNCED

    The shortlist for the Savills Arts Prize – the biggest award in Irish contemporary art – has been announced by Vue 2016, Ireland’s national contemporary art fair. The five artists on the shortlist are Ennis artist Mick O’Dea, visual artist Jaki Irvine, Mullingar artist Patrick Graham, Lisburn artist David Crone and Dublin-based Gavin O’Curry.

    The €5,000 Savills Art Prize will be awarded to the artist who has produced an outstanding body of work in the last year or made some other substantial contribution to the visual arts in Ireland. Vue runs at the Royal Hibernian Academy gallery from November 3, when the prize will be presented, to November 6.

    Galleries exhibiting work at Vue 2016 include Kerlin gallery, Catherine Hammond Gallery (Cork), Cross Gallery, Molesworth Gallery, Stoney Road Press, Hillsboro Fine Art, Green on Red, Eight, Peppercanister, Graphic Studio, Fenderesky, Kevin Kavanagh, Gallery of Photography, Solomon, Olivier Cornet, Taylor Gallery, Gormleys, Jonathan Ellis King, Gibbons and Nicholas, Oonagh Young Gallery and Art Box.

    TWO DAY HOUSE CONTENTS SALE AT KILTERNAN LODGE

    There will be a two day house contents sale at Kilternan Lodge, Kilternan, Co. Dublin – home of the late Don Carroll of tobacco manufacturers Carroll Industries – on October 29 and 30 at 1 p.m. on each day. Matthews of Oldcastle will conduct a sale with 1,250 lots in total.  Around 650 lots, many with reasonable estimates, will come under the hammer on day one.  Born in Cork in 1927 Don Carroll, who died in 2000, was an influential figure in Irish industry and banking and served as governor of the Bank of Ireland.  The house (pictured right) has been bought by the interior decorator Helen Turkington who plans to refurbish it.

    The biggest prize in Irish contemporary art will be presented at Vue 2016 at the Royal Hibernian Association gallery on November 3.  The €5,000 Vue Contemporary Art Prize presented by Savills will be awarded to the artist who has produced an outstanding body of work in the last year or made some other substantial contribution to the visual arts in Ireland. Nineteen of Ireland’s leading contemporary art galleries have nominated an artist and the adjudicator is RHA director Dr Patrick Murphy.

    The long list of nominations includes Maser, Jaki Irvine, Patrick Graham, Francis O’Toole, Michael Coleman, Catherine Barron, Blaise Drummond and Donald Teskey, John Cronin, Ciaran Lennon, David Crone, Mick O’Dea, Yvette Monahan, John Behan, Eoin MacLochlainn, Stephen Johnston, Timothy Furey, Marty Kelly, Gavin O’Curry and Bridget O’Gorman.  Last year’s prize was awarded to Richard Gorman.

    “This is only the second year the Savills Art Prize has been presented at Vue and we hope the award will become as important to Irish art as the Turner Prize is in the UK,” said Vue 2016 organiser Louis O’Sullivan.  Galleries participating include Kerlin Gallery, Cross Gallery, Molesworth Gallery, Stoney Road Press, Hillsboro Fine Art, Green on Red, Eight, Peppercanister, Graphic Studio, Fenderesky, Kevin Kavanagh, Gallery of Photography, Solomon, Olivier Cornet, Gormleys, Jonathan Ellis King, Gibbons and Nicholas, Oonagh Young Gallery and Art Box.
