    Tuesday, June 20th, 2017

Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting at the newly refurbished National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin until September 17 includes as many as ten works by the artist. This represents almost one third of the surviving oeuvre of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675).  It is the third highest number of works by the artist ever assembled in the world.

The National Gallery of Ireland’s Vermeer, Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid, c.1670, which is regarded as one of the artist’s finest works, will be shown alongside other exquisite works including Woman with a Balance, c.1663–4 (National Gallery of Art, Washington); Woman with a Pearl Necklace, 1663-4 (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin); The Astronomer, 1668 (Musée du Louvre, Paris) and The Geographer, 1669 (Städel Museum, Frankfurt-am-Main). Paintings of daily life by contemporaries of Vermeer, including Gerrit Dou, Gerard ter Borch, Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Pieter de Hooch and Frans van Mieris, will also feature.  The show brings together some 60 paintings from around the world.

THE SWORD CANE OF IRELAND’S LORD LIEUTENANT AT LONDON AUCTION

    Tuesday, June 20th, 2017

    THE SWORD CANE

The sword cane of Sir Henry Paget (1768-1854), who became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1827, comes up at Thomas Del Mar’s auction of arms and armour in London on June 28. He was a comparatively popular Lord Lieutenant because of his evident sympathy for the cause of Catholic emancipation this was a role in which he was in constant personal danger. Initially he served in Ireland for one year and was re-appointed in 1830-33.

It is possible the sword cane was purchased in Anglesea prior to his passage to Ireland. As Earl of Uxbridge he enjoyed the confidence of Wellington and commanded the Allied Cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo.

He lost his leg towards the end of that battle and walked thereafter with the aid of a bespoke prosthetic right leg. Immediately after the battle he was created Marquess of Anglesea.  The sword cane is estimated at £3,000-5,000.

DOUBLE GOURD VASE MAKES 740,000 AT SHEPPARDS

    Monday, June 19th, 2017

A Chinese Blue and White Shep Vase.

A Chinese blue and white vase sold for 740,000 at Sheppards in Durrow on July 17.  It had been estimated at just 800-1,200.  It went to a Paris based buyer.

The Qing double gourd vase had come from a Dublin based vendor. It was the top lot at Sheppards sale of Chinese ceramics and works of art. The sale had been on view at Kilkenny Castle.

In 2010 a 12 inch high Ming style pear shaped Chinese vase with an asking price of just 150 made 110,000 at a sale in Sheppards.  It turned out to be an authentic vase from the Imperial House in the  Forbidden City.

SELF PORTRAIT BY ANDY WARHOL AT SOTHEBY’S IN LONDON

    Monday, June 19th, 2017

Andy Warhol – Self Portrait (1963-64).

A work from Andy Warhol’s first series of self-portraits comes up at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art evening auction in London on June 28. In the early 1960s the Pop art pioneer achieved renown for his candid portrayals of luminaries including Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.

Self-Portrait, 1963-64, represents the moment that Warhol stepped out from behind the camera and into the glare of its flashbulb – and the moment that Warhol the icon was born. This was a turning point that reverberated throughout his oeuvre. Created when Warhol was 35 years old, Self-Portrait will be offered at auction for the first time, 30 years after the artist’s death in 1987.

Self-Portrait was created using images taken in a New York photo-booth. The use of such unconventional source material was, at this time, fiercely innovative, and added to the aura of technical invention that already surrounded this artist, who had pioneered the use of silkscreen printing in art only a couple of years previously. The work is estimated at £5-7 million.

REMARKABLE COLLECTION OF TUSCAN CASSONE PANELS

A remarkable collection of Tuscan Renaissance Cassone panels will come up at Christie’s Old Masters evening sale in London on July 6. Typically commissioned to commemorate marriages of the Florentine or Sienese elite until the mid-fifteenth century the collection comprises eight panels in total. The highlight is an unusually well-preserved cassone front by Giovanni Toscani (1370/80–1430). The panel has been recognised as the pendant to that in the National Gallery of Scotland and depicts Scenes from the tale of Ginevra and Bernabò of Genoa and Ambrogiuolo of Piacenza.

ORDER OF SURRENDER SPARKS BIDDING WAR

    Thursday, June 15th, 2017

    Surrender Order

There was a bidding war at Bonhams in London on June 14 for a typed Order of Surrender from the 1916 Rising.  Signed by Patrick Pearse it sold for £263,000 over an estimate of £80,000-120,000.

Bonhams representative in Ireland, manuscript specialist Kieran O’Boyle, said, “The Order of Surrender is one of the most significant documents in Irish 20th century history, and I am not surprised that it was so keenly sought after, nor that it sold for such an impressive amount.”

The order ended the Easter Rising in April 1916.  The nationalist uprising, which broke out on Easter Monday under the overall leadership of Pearse was met with uncompromising and overwhelming force by the British authorities.
