HONG LING RETROSPECTIVE AT CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY

    Friday, September 9th, 2016

A retrospective exhibition of Chinese artist Hong Ling runs at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin from October 21 to January 29, 2017.  Born in Beijing in 1955, the artist studied oil painting in the years after the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–76). In the mountains of rural China his brush found a new path. Drawing together the imported medium of oil on canvas with the landscapes and philosophies of China’s artistic heritage, Hong Ling has made a contribution to the world of Chinese landscape painting unparalleled in its vibrancy.

The exhibition charts the development of his art from student paintings in his personal collection to vast later works in oil and in ink. Working from his studio in the foothills of the Yellow Mountains of China’s Anhui Province, Hong Ling reveals the charged atmosphere of this dramatic locale from the bold colours of the shifting seasons to the heavy mists that weave among pine-clad peaks. As exhilarating as they are immersive, Hong Ling’s paintings stand as an invitation to join him in the landscape that is his home and his inspiration.

The exhibition is part of a touring retrospective sponsored by UNEEC Culture and Education Foundation, Taiwan, and organised with Soka Art and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

MARILYN’S SKIN TIGHT DRESS TO TOUR TO KILDARE

    Wednesday, September 7th, 2016
    That dress. The front view.

    That dress. The front view.

The skin tight flesh coloured dress worn by Marilyn Monroe as she sang “Happy Birthday Mr. President” to JFK  is to be displayed at the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons in Ireland before being sold by Julien’s Auctions on November 17.  The custom made Jean Louis creation was so tight fitting that Marilyn had to be sewn into it at the last moment. It will be displayed on the mannequin designed to match her body measurement.

On Saturday, May 19, 1962, at a Democratic fundraiser and early 45th birthday celebration, President John F. Kennedy took his seat in Madison Square Garden at what was to become one of the most iconic moments in entertainment and political history. In front of 15,000 guests, many of them celebrities, actor Peter Lawford made an introduction that would change the course of pop culture and Presidential folklore forever. Under a bright spotlight Marilyn Monroe walked on stage and peeled away her white ermine fur coat, revealing the sheer dress that sparkled with over 2,500 handstitched crystals. Her intimate tone and projection of the words Mr. President stunned the audience. Jacqueline Kennedy was not present. The song lasted just 30 seconds. Sadly this was one of Marilyn’s last public appearances and the last time they met. She died three months later, the president was assassinated the following year.

Prior to the auction, the “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress will go on tour. It is to be shown at MANA Contemporary in New Jersey as part of the Exhibition “Marilyn: Character Not Image” followed by the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons (MOSI) in Kildare, Ireland from October 29 to November 6 before making its way back to the Julien’s Auctions Gallery in Los Angeles.

“We have had remarkable opportunities to offer unique objects related to Marilyn Monroe in the past,” said Martin Nolan, Executive Director of Julien’s Auctions. “To be part of the continued interest and excitement around this legend is always thrilling. This dress, this story, this momentous occasion represents a defining moment in history. This auction will remind the world why Marilyn Monroe remains an icon.”

Three days of live and online auctions from the life and career of Marilyn Monroe and the collection of Lee Strasberg will kick off at Julien’s on November 17.

    JAMES ENSOR PRINTS AT SOTHEBY’S

    Monday, September 5th, 2016

ensorA private collection of 78 prints by Belgian artist James Ensor, one of the most comprehensive of its kind ever at auction, will come up at Sotheby’s in London on September 27. The sale precedes Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans, an upcoming exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts from October 29 to January 29. This will present the first major showing of Ensor’s work to be held in the UK in 20 years. Ensor’s reputation as a painter of carnivals and crowds – “the painter of masks” – has perhaps overshadowed his extraordinary achievements in printmaking. The broad range of subject matter encompasses delicate landscapes, townscapes and seascapes, celebrated self-portraits and sardonic portraits of politicians, religious and fantastical scenes. It is estimated to make a combined total in excess of £300,000 in Sotheby’s sale of Prints and Multiples.

UNDISCOVERED RARITIES IN COLLECTION OF BRIAN SEWELL

    Sunday, September 4th, 2016
Undiscovered rarities have been found in the collection of Brian Sewell which comes up at Christie’s in London on September 27. One of Britain’s best loved art critics he had a flair for spotting quality, even where the identify of the artist had been long lost. A number of new attributions have been made since the catalogue to the auction Brian Sewell: Critic and Collector was published.
An oil on paper study on blue paper of a soldier carrying a ladder towards a besieged town, thought to have been by a follower of Michelangelo, was spotted by a museum curator in the US as by the Florentine artist Agostino Ciampelli (1565-1630). The technique with black chalk heightened by white on blue paper is characteristic of Ciampelli.  The drawing, made in connection with a Medici marriage in 1589, was acquired by Brian Sewell in the early 1960’s. It is now estimated at £20,000-30,000.
A profile study has been found to be typical of the technique of Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) when using red chalk (£6,000-8,000). A two-sided study in oil on paper by Domenico Tintoretto (1560-1635) has just been associated with a series of pictures in the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. A meticulously drawn view from 1794 was identified as the Schmadribach Waterfall near Lauterbrunnen, a favourite subject of German Romantic Joseph Anton Koch (1768-1839) (£20,000-30,000).
Dido Reclining, Asleep by Daniele da Volterra (1509-66) was identified through extensive research at Christie’s and is estimated at £100,000-150,000.  Estimates in the auction range from £600 to £600,000.  UPDATE:  The auction achieved £3,741,313

VALUE TO BE HAD IN IRISH ART MARKET

    Saturday, September 3rd, 2016
The Irish art market took a hit in the recession.  It is recovering slowly, but there is still value to be had. One of Ireland’s best known women artists Hamilton, who died in 1964, studied under Sir William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, with Frank Brangwyn in Belgium and at the Slade in London.

Among the other artists whose work will feature are Patrick Scott, John Shinnors, Tony O’Malley, Basil Blackshaw, Frank McKelvey, Daniel O’Neill, Hughie O’Donoghue, Patrick Hennessy and the sculptor John Behan. The sale of 135 lots is on view in Skibbereen on September 3, 4 and 5 and at the RDS in Dublin from September 9 to September 12.  The catalogue is online and the auction will be conducted online.

A BATON TO COMMEMORATE PARNELL AT WHYTE’S

    Friday, September 2nd, 2016

A baton carried by the Chief Marshal of the Parnell Anniversary Demonstration in Dublin on October 7, 1890 is included in Whyte’s Eclectic Collector auction on September 17.  The bog-oak baton surmounted by a silver plated bust of Charles Stewart Parnell and decorated with carvings of ivy, commemorates “the uncrowned King of Ireland”.

Ivy as a symbol of allegiance to Parnell takes its cue from a wreath of ivy sent by a Cork woman to Parnell’s funeral as the best offering she could afford.  There is an engraved white metal collar noting that it was presented to Mr. M.J. Murray, Chief Marshall of the demonstration.  The baton is estimated at 1,000-1,500.

The auction will include sporting memorabilia, stamps, banknotes, advertising signs, travel posters, books, photographs and ephemera and the catalogue is online at Whyte’s.

KISSINGER’S PERSONAL LINCOLN CONTINENTAL AT CLASSIC CAR AUCTION

    Thursday, September 1st, 2016
    Henry Kissinger's personal Lincoln Continental.

    Henry Kissinger’s personal Lincoln Continental.

Henry Kissinger’s personal Lincoln Continental Limousine, complete with bulletproof glass, comes up at the 42nd annual Dan Kruse Classics sale in Austin, Texas on September 10. Kissinger was U.S. Secretary of State under President Richard Nixon and won the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for the Vietnam War accords.  He was instrumental in the signing of a ceasefire agreement which ended the direct conflict but remained controversial over his “peace and honor” strategy which prolonged the war for four years. Kissinger continued to play a pivotal role in American foreign policy under President Ronald Reagan where he was chair of the National Bipartisan Commission on Central America.  Known for his tough, skillful negotiating power he also served under President Bush.

The 1966 Lincoln Continental Limousine transported numerous diplomats and world leaders throughout Kissinger’s lengthy career in public service. The limousine has blue exterior and black interior.
