This jardiniere sold for 56,000.
An 18th/19th century Canton enamel and stained ivory jardiniere made a hammer price of 56,000 over a top estimate of 2,000 at the James Adam sale of the Alton Collection in Dublin this week. It was the top lot in a sale where 80% of lots on offer found buyers.
A c1742 Meissen group of the indiscreet harlequin modelled by J.J. Kandler sold for 38,000 at hammer over a top estimate of 35,000. A bronze and ivory figure, the turbaned dancer by Paul Philippe (1870-1930) made 32,000 over a top estimate of 5,000. A c1616 leaf from a Mughal manuscript made 17,000 and a Cretan 17th century painted timber icon made 15,000. A pair of oils on canvas of The Battle of the Nile on August 1, 1798 in the style of Thomas Luny (1759-1837) sold for 14,000 and a set of four Irish silver candlesticks Dublin c1760 made 13,500.

This miniature oil on ivory represents the Court of the Mughal Emperor Aldwar (Akbar) Shah II at Delhi around 1820. A long haired prince is on trial for discharging a pistol at the British resident at Delhi. He was imprisoned and died in 1821. There is some doubt about who the resident was, but it is thought to be Sir Charles Metcalfe.
