    QING DYNASTY DOGS TO WARD OFF EVIL AT WOODWARDS

    If you are looking at ways to ward off evil and spice up your garden or an interior space at the same time Woodwards sale in Cork on March 13 might have the answer.  A pair of antique Qing Dynasty foo dogs  – also known as stone lions or shishi in Japan – is on offer with an estimate of €2,000-€3,000.  These highly stylised lions originated in Chinese Buddhism and are thought to offer protection from harmful spiritual influences or people.  A popular decorative feature found everywhere from imperial palaces to the entrances of restaurants and supermarkets they are an ideal additive in 2021, though vaccines are even better.

    The selection on offer includes an Edwardian games table (€600-€1,000), a bureau bookcase  (€600-€1,000), a kidney shaped desk (€400-€600),  an Oriental pod table (€300-€500), a Georgian library table (€300-€500), a William IV work table (€300-€400) and a Georgian Pembroke table (€300-€500).  A pair of Coalbrookdale garden benches (€1,500-€2,000) and a five piece patio set will also be offered.  The sale features items from the estate of the late Stan Cussen who was well known in Cork as owner of the Planes, Boats and Trains model toy shop on Princes St. and the Farmhouse cafe and cake shop.

    An Edwardian dolls house, a marble topped giltwood console table and a Victorian rosewood work table are among the lots at Woodwards online only auction of antiques, fine art and collectibles ON February 13.  This first sale of 2021 by the Cork auctioneers will include three house contents from residences in Douglas and Carrigaline. The selection on offer includes  an inlaid walnut demi lune card table (€500-€800), a William IV breakfast table (€400-€500), a set of Georgian dining chairs (€400-€600), a large Iranian rug (€400-€600), a Georgian Pembroke table (€200-€400), a Coalbrookdale garden seat (€600-€800), a Georgian bureau bookcase (€400-€600), an Edwardian tea table (€200-€400) and a longcase clock by Sterling, Limerick (€400-€600).  The dolls house is estimated at €300-€400, the Louis XV style console table at €400-€600 and the worktable at €300-€400. The auction will include a selection of mirrors, glassware, marine items, porcelian and paintings.

    SUMMER ANTIQUE SALE AT WOODWARDS, CORK

    No summer antique auction would be complete without a pair of proper cast iron benches.  Woodwards will have a fine Coalbrookdale example at their sale in Cork on July 20. The selection of antiques on offer ranges from a Vienna wall clock to a Regency teapot and a Georgian bachelor’s chest estimated respetively at  600-1,000, 400-800 and 300-500. The auction will feature chairs, mirrors, silver and collectibles. The Coalbrookdale benches are estimated at 1,200-2,000 and a five piece cast iron garden suite is estimated at 800-1,200.

    CORK AND LIMERICK SILVER AT WOODWARDS

    Highly collectible Cork and Limerick pieces are included in Woodwards special bi-annual sale of Irish and English silver in Cork on November 10. The bulk of the sale is from the estate of a private collector of Irish silver and will include Cork silver sauceboats by Carden Terry (c1785) and John Warner (c1790) each estimated at 1,000-2,000.
    One Limerick silver piece is a catch for most sales, this one has four. Limerick makers Maurice Fitzgerald, George Moore, Patrick Connell and Joseph Johns are all represented. There is pair of c1775 tablespoons by Maurice Fitzgerald (800-1,000), a c1765 tablespoon by George Moore (400-600), a pair of c1785 tablespoons by Patrick Connell (800-1,000) and a pair of c1790 tablespoons by Joseph Johns (800-1,000).

    In addition to this the Cork makers Daniel McCarthy, John Toleken, John Nicholson, Joseph Gibson, Carden Terry and Jane Williams are all represented with pieces including a sugar bowl, serving spoon, marrow scoop, tablespoons and dessert spoons. Estimates for these piece range from a low of 150 to a high of 1,500.  There are more than 250 lots of silver and about 40 Irish paintings including a charcoal and wash drawing by Sean Keating and work by Tony O’Malley, Louis le Brocquy, Frank Egginton, Arthur Maderson and Anne Yeats.

    Something you don’t happen across every day – a Victorian suit of armour – comes up at Woodwards in Cork on October 13 with an estimate of 400-800.  Prime lots at the auction include a pair of garden benches by Pierce of Wexford (1,500-2,000), a Victorian dining table (1,000-1,500), a set of ten Regency design dining chairs (600-1,000) and a pair of Art Deco chandeliers (500-1,000).  The catalogue is online.     Antique and garden furniture will be on offer at Woodwards sale in Cork on April 14.  There is a Sheffield five piece silver service (2,000-3,000), a pair of large garden vases (1,800-2,200), a Victorian d-end dining table (800-1,200) and a Georgian rosewood card table (800-1,200).

    A  pair of William IV card tables and a pair of Coalbrookdale garden benches are feature lots at the Woodwards sale in Cork on August 26.  The auctioneers will offer contents from two estates and three house sales. There is an Eileen Gray c1027 chrome table, a Sheraton inlaid credenza as well as a commode, a bonheur du jour and a walnut desk all in the style Louis XV.     KILLARNEY WOOD TABLE AT WOODWARDS IN CORK

    A Killarney wood tilt-top table is among the antique furniture, fine art and garden furniture at Woodwards auction in Cork on October 22. Two sets of Cork 11-bar chairs made by O’Connell’s – the Cork furniture making family –  are each estimated at 1,000-2,000. There are chests of drawers with estimates from 100-400. A d-end twin pillar dining table is modestly estimated at just 200-300 and bureaux are estimated at just 100-200.  Also on offer are a George II walnut chest of drawers (800-1,200), a French 18th century commode (700-1,000), three large Dutch baroque gilt framed mirrors c1700, a Georgian inlaid half moon card table (600-900), a Georgian teardrop chest (400-600), a William IV rosewood card table (300-500) and a set of eight ribbon back dining chairs (300-500).  The Killarney table is estimated at 4,000-6,000.  The catalogue is online.
