Millennials from around the globe were moved to take part in the fabulous sales of the collections of Hubert de Givenchy at Christie’s in June and there should be much to tempt our Irish millennials at Woodwards sale in Cork on July 16. It should be possible to pick up a piece of antique furniture for a song at this auction.
Estimated at just €300-€400 are a Cork bowfront sideboard, an ormolu mounted bijouterie table, a Georgian bureau bookcase, a set of six dining chairs, a mahogany pedestal office desk and an Edwardian sofa table. A Victorian round work table, a Victorian d-end dining table, a Georgian library table, a Georgian bureau and a three tier dumb waiter are on the market with estimates of just €200-€300. Irish silver 4 piece tea service by William Egan & Sons Ltd. UPDATE: THIS MADE 1,400 AT HAMMER
This Irish silver four piece tea service by William Egan & Sons Ltd, Cork comes up at Woodwards online art and silver auction on May 7. It is of panelled form with shaped handles and raised bases with the Glenisheen collar hallmark for 1973 and is estimated at €1,500-€2,500. Among the highlights are an abstract by Mainie Jellett and there is art by Arthur Maderson, Kenneth Webb, Gladys MacCabe, Kenneth Webb, Bingham McGuinness, Thomas Ryan, Alexander Williams, John Kingerlee, Tom Nisbet, Stella Steyn, Victor Richardson, Eileen Meagher and others. A Cork helmet shaped cream ewer stamped STERLING, a pair of boat shaped sauceboats by William Egan, a strawberry dish by the Cork maker Cyril O’Mahony, a berry spoon by Isaac Solomon, Cork 1831 and a Dublin dish ring by West and Son will all come under the hammer. UPDATE: Composition No. 24 and Abstract by Mainie Jellett made hammer prices of €8,000 and €5,000 respectively, St Peter’s Basilica Rome by Arthur Maderson made €4,000 and Paris in Spring by Gladys MacCabe made €2,800.

Georgian, William IV, Regency and Edwardian furniture will come up at Woodwards online sale in Cork on April 2. Highlights in this sale of more than 300 lots include a Regency inlaid yew fitted work table (€1,500-€2,500), a George II walnut kneehole desk €1,000-€1,500) and a pair of Coalbrookdale garden benches (€1,500-€2,000). Estimates are more reasonable than would have been the case a couple of decades ago, underlining once again how vintage furniture is undervalued right now. Here are some examples: A George II walnut card table (€700-€1,000); Edwardian cellarette (€400-€600); William IV rosewood teapoy (€600-€1,000); three pillar d-end dining table (€500-€800); Regency gilt window seat (€400-€600); Georgian walnut bureau €400-€600); Georgian library armchair (500-€800); Edwardian bonheur du jour (€300-€400) and a Victorian walnut drop leaf table (€400-€600).

House sales are always a draw and Woodwards sale of contents from Millboro House, Lee Road, Cork on February 12 will be no exception. The auction of 348 lots will be online and viewing gets underway at the house from today. The auction had been previously postponed due to Covid restrictions. From a Victorian gilt overmantle to two four poster beds, antique longcase clock dials and an economy three section dining table the selection of antique furniture from Millboro House is brimful of interest.
The late consultant anaesthetist Dr. Don Coleman, who died in 2016 at the age of 94, was an avid collector. Contents from this imposing period house include bureau bookcases, sideboards, lamps and chandeliers, tables, chairs, butlers trays, garden statuary, crystal glass, silver and all the items that emerged from the cupboards, nooks and crannies at a large family home. There is an estimate of €2,500-€5,000 on both a Georgian inlaid cylinder bureau bookcase and the economy dining table. A Regency style mahogany breakfront sideboard, possibly made in Cork, is estimated at €1,500-€3,000. In Georgian and Victorian times clockmakers flourished around James St. and Washington St in Cork city centre. Among the more unusual collectibles are antique longcase clock faces, three in brass and one painted. The brass examples are by James Aickin, Cork, Mark Kirkpatrick, Dublin and “McCarthy Corke” and the painted dial is by M Shaughnessy Cork.
An economy three section dining table UPDATE: THIS MADE 2,400 AT HAMMER
Antique furniture, collectibles, rugs and art will all come up at Woodwards first sale of 2022 on January 29 in Cork. Items from recent house sales and estates are featured in this online only auction which is now on view at Cook St. in Cork city centre subject to Covid restrictions. Georgian pieces include a walnut lowboy, an inlaid bureau and a walnut card table all estimated at €500-€800. A Regency sofa table is estimated at €800-€1,200 and chests of drawers and a d-end dining table feature as well. There is a painting of turf stacks by Douglas Alexander (€300-€400) and collectibles include three antique bronze Chinese ceremonial longstaffs (€800-€1,500) and a Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy car figure (€400-€600). A large red ground Kashan carpet and a selection of Waterford Crystal is included too.
Georgian walnut lowboy. UPDATE: THIS MADE 280 AT HAMMER
A lifesize metal figure of St. Patrick which is more than six feet tall will feature among the antique furniture and collectibles at Woodwards online sale in Cork on September 4. On offer are contents from Carrigrhu House, a period piece overlooking Cuskinny in Cork Harbour. The St. Patrick figure is estimated at €1,000-€1,500. It was acquired from the late Donal O’Regan, whose antique and arts shops first on Lavitts Quay and then at Fenns Quay in Cork were a mecca for collectors from right around the country. A French comtoise or longcase clock by Abbal Fils at St. Pierre-des-Cas dates to around 1850. It is estimated at €2,000-€3,000. This is one of two period house contents sales that Woodwards plan to conduct in September. A sale of contents from Millboro House, Lee Road is planned for September 25.
A selection of antique furniture will come up at Woodwards in Cork on June 19. Among the lots on offer are an unusual inlaid Indian card table in need of some restoration (€600-€800) and a Georgian walnut bachelors chest with a similar estimate. Other lots include a Georgian mahogany bureau, a Victorian tambour front desk, a Louis XV inlaid card table, an Edwardian envelope card table and a pair of bookcases by Hobbs and Co. London. There is a Glasgow longcase clock, a Chinese Chippendale style cabinet by Edwards and Roberts, a William IV teapoy, a set of six Chippendale style dining chairs and a pair of Art Deco mirrors. Among the other lots are a Coalbrookdale garden bench, a cast iron five piece garden suite, Waterford Crystal, silver and collectibles. The sale is on view from 10 am to 5 pm all this week and the catalogue is online.
If you are looking at ways to ward off evil and spice up your garden or an interior space at the same time Woodwards sale in Cork on March 13 might have the answer. A pair of antique Qing Dynasty foo dogs – also known as stone lions or shishi in Japan – is on offer with an estimate of €2,000-€3,000. These highly stylised lions originated in Chinese Buddhism and are thought to offer protection from harmful spiritual influences or people. A popular decorative feature found everywhere from imperial palaces to the entrances of restaurants and supermarkets they are an ideal additive in 2021, though vaccines are even better.
The selection on offer includes an Edwardian games table (€600-€1,000), a bureau bookcase (€600-€1,000), a kidney shaped desk (€400-€600), an Oriental pod table (€300-€500), a Georgian library table (€300-€500), a William IV work table (€300-€400) and a Georgian Pembroke table (€300-€500). A pair of Coalbrookdale garden benches (€1,500-€2,000) and a five piece patio set will also be offered. The sale features items from the estate of the late Stan Cussen who was well known in Cork as owner of the Planes, Boats and Trains model toy shop on Princes St. and the Farmhouse cafe and cake shop.

An Edwardian dolls house, a marble topped giltwood console table and a Victorian rosewood work table are among the lots at Woodwards online only auction of antiques, fine art and collectibles ON February 13. This first sale of 2021 by the Cork auctioneers will include three house contents from residences in Douglas and Carrigaline. The selection on offer includes an inlaid walnut demi lune card table (€500-€800), a William IV breakfast table (€400-€500), a set of Georgian dining chairs (€400-€600), a large Iranian rug (€400-€600), a Georgian Pembroke table (€200-€400), a Coalbrookdale garden seat (€600-€800), a Georgian bureau bookcase (€400-€600), an Edwardian tea table (€200-€400) and a longcase clock by Sterling, Limerick (€400-€600). The dolls house is estimated at €300-€400, the Louis XV style console table at €400-€600 and the worktable at €300-€400. The auction will include a selection of mirrors, glassware, marine items, porcelian and paintings.
