    A KERRY LAKE BY PAUL HENRY SELLS FOR A HAMMER PRICE OF 74,000

    A Kerry Lake by Paul Henry was the top lot at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction in Dublin. It made a hammer price of 74,000 against an estimate of 60,000-80,000. A charcoal on paper by the same artist, Man Crossing a Bog, made 16,000 in a successful auction where most lots found buyers.  A watercolour by Sean Scully entitled 3.17.02 sold for 29,000 and Colorado Springs by Lord of the Dance turned visual artist Michael Flatley sold for 42,000. Markey Robinson’s Going to Mass sold for 11,000 and Bunbeg, Co. Donegal by Letitia Marion Hamilton sold for a hammer price of 15,000.

    NEW WORK BY SEAN SCULLY AT DUBLIN’S KERLIN GALLERY

    NEW work by Sean Scully is on show at the Kerlin Gallery in Dublin from June 26 to August 29.  With exhibitions of Scully now running at the National Gallery of Ireland and at the Crawford Gallery in Cork from June 27 to September 12 there is what amounts almost to a national celebration of the artist underway in Ireland this summer. He turns 70 this year. At Kerlin there is a show of new paintings and pastels from his “Landline” series. The series makes reference to the edge of the land and Scully has removed almost all vertical forms from this work.  Many of the works are painted on aluminium, a relatively new development in his practice.

    The 220 lot Art and Literature online book auction at Morgan O’Driscoll runs until June 8 at 6.30 p.m.  It features rarities like John Lavery and his work by Walter Shaw Sparrow, published in 1912 and estimated at 30-50 and Sean Scully at Galerie Lelong Paris 1997 (eleven colour plates)(30-50), Jack B. Yeats, His Watercolours, Drawing and Pastels by Hilary Pyle 1993 (50-70) and a signed limited edition of The Burial at Thebes by Seamus Heaney (500-700).  An 1839 edition of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens is estimated  at 1,200-1,800 and a 1902 edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle is estimated at  800-1,200.  The catalogue is online.

    SEAN SCULLY AT SOTHEBY’S CONTEMPORARY SALES

    Enter Yellow by the Irish artist Sean Scully made a hammer price of  £409,250 at Sotheby’s  Contemporary art evening auction in London on February 15.  It had been estimated at £300,000-500,000.

    The following day Scully, who draws inspiration from the low stone walls of the west of Ireland, had another work at Sotheby’s day sale.  His work entitled Small Grey Wall, signed and dated 2002, made a hammer price with buyer’s premium of £289,250.  It had been estimated at £200,000-300,000.
