    WORKS BY MacGONIGAL, HENNESSY, WEBB, SHINNORS, BEHAN

    A Galway seascape by Maurice MacGonigal, a still life by Patrick Hennessy and a flower study by Kenneth Webb are among the highlights at Dolan’s art and antiques auction in Ballyconneely, Connemara on August 6 and 7. Viewing is underway for the two day marquee sale which gets underway on Bank Holiday Monday at 12.30 p.m.  As well as paintings and sculpture the sale will feature some quality furniture, antiques and collectibles with silver, books, rugs, jewellery and a number of designer handbags from Hermes, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.
    Artists include John Shinnors, George Russell, John Behan, Henry Morgan, Carina Scott and Mark O’Neill.  Lot 24 is an album of photographs showing the daily progress of the building of a railway gun wagon at Gateshead from September 1-13, 1914. The 47 photos are estimated at 1,000-1,500. A set of five US gold coins of various dates from 1873 to 1907 is estimated at  2,000-2,200. An Edwardian painted rocking horse and an early 20h century rocking horse will command attention and there is a selection of antique furniture.
    Among the furniture is a c1870 Victorian writing table, three longcase clocks, a walnut writing table and a circular late Georgian mahogany breakfast table.
    Sunlight on daffodils and azalea at Kilmurry, a watercolour by Mildred Anne Butler dated 1901 is estimated at 3,000-4,000.  Cattle in a meadow by her fellow Kilkenny artist Nassau Blair Browne, exhibited at the RHA in 1918, is estimated at 4,000-5,000.  Blair Browne served as Secretary to the RHA from 1911 to 1924 and was Governor the National Gallery of Ireland from 1918-1924.  Lot 191, Sweetpea in Bloom by Kenneth Webb is estimated at 9,000-10,000, Connemara Hooker, Roundstone Harbour by Maurice MacGonigal is estimated at  11,000-12,000 and Virgo and Letter by Patrick Hennessy is estimated at  10,000-12,000.   An oil on canvas by John Behan, primarily known as a sculptor, features fishermen in the west.  Signed and dated 2017 it is estimated at 3,500-4,000.  Much of the art in this auction of more than 500 lots will carry estimates which are lower than this.     With everything from Figures in a pool by  Roderic O’Conor, Cottages by Paul Henry and The Eugenie off Queenstown by George Mounsey Atkinson to John  Behan’s sculpted bull and a painting of a bulldog by Basil Blackshaw Morgan O’Driscoll’s sale of Irish and International Art is at the RDS in Dublin this evening.

    There is art by John Shinnors and Donald Teskey, Percy French and Walter Osborne, Louis le Brocquy and Dan O’Neill.  On the international side there is a screenprint by Damien Hirst, a mixed media work by Joan Miro, a litho of Mao by Warhol and a screenprint and litho by Robert Motherwell.  Other artists featured among 147 lots include Sean Scully, Barrie Cooke, Felim Egan, Kenneth Webb, William Crozier, Alice Maher, and Charles Tyrrell.

    LONDON VIEWINGS FOR SALE OF IRISH ART

    Skibbereen based art auctioneer Morgan O’Driscoll will hold viewings in London on April 3, 4 and 5 for his upcoming Irish and International Art auction at the RDS on April 10.  Mr. O’Driscoll, who conducts a number of online art auctions every year, has found new buyers and an increased awareness of Irish art and artists by holding regular viewing in the British capital for his major sales.   The evening sale at the Minerva Suite of the RDS on April 10 will feature 185 lots, including 27 lots of sculpture. London viewings are at La Galleria at 30 Royal Opera Arcade, Pall Mall and viewings at the RDS get underway at 2 pm on April 7.  Among the highlights is work by Paul Henry,  Frank McKelvey, Nathaniel Hone, Henry Jones Thaddeus, Evie Hone and Louis le Brocquy.  The catalogue is online.  Here is a small selection:

    Art by Paul Henry, Basil Blackshaw, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Banksy are among a diverse selection at the Irish and International art auction by Morgan O’Driscoll at the RHA Gallery in Dublin on December 5 at 6 p.m.  The international selection includes Lichtenstein’s Red Lamps (1990) numbered 23/60 from his Interior Series (35,000-45,000), Festival (2006) by Banksy with a Pest Control Certificate of Authenticity (15,000-20,000) and Martha Graham: Lamentation (1986) by Andy Warhol (6,000-9,000).  There is a selection of Irish work from artists as diverse as Donald Teskey, Letitia Marion Hamilton, Charles Tyrrell, Nano Reid, Robert Ballagh, Markey Robinson, Hughie O’Donoghue, John Behan and John Noel Smith.  The catalogue, with 161 lots, is online.
