    CHAIR BY JOSEPH WALSH AT DE VERES

    The Figure of Six ash chair from 2006 by Joseph Walsh is, at 6,000-9,000, the most expensively estimated piece of furniture at de Veres evening Design Auction at the Royal College of Physicians, Kildare St. on May 22.  The work of this Cork based designer is at the Pompidou, Paris, Cooper Hewitt, New York, the Devonshire collection at Chatsworth, the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, the National Museum of Ireland and many other prestige collections.
    The hammock like profile in a pedestal frame of the 1971 Falcon chair and stool by the Norwegian designer Sigurd Resell ensured its enduring popularity and a production lifeline that went on for more than 30 years. The one at de Veres is estimated at 1,000-1,500.

    The auction of 200 lots features Danish sideboards, coffee tables, settees and easy chairs, Italian console tables, bars and lamps. wall mirrors, easy chairs, coffee tables and shelves.  Designers featured range from Eero Saarinen, Niels Otto Moller and Charles and Ray Eames to Sir Norman Foster and Philippe Starck.  There are shelves and lamps by sculptor Patrick O’Reilly and art by Patrick Scott, Sean Scully, Felim Egan, Mark Francis, Willie Doherty, Conor Fallon, Theo McNab and William Scott among 200 lots.  The catalogue is onlinel Here is a small selection.

    YEATS, SHINNORS, SCOTT AT de VERES ART AUCTION

    Yeats, Shinnors, William Scott and a collection of works from artists of the the St. Ive’s School like Roger Hilton and Terry Frost are all on the catalogue at de Veres Irish Art sale at the Royal College of Physicians on Kildare St., Dublin on November 21.  Viewing is already underway at de Veres on Kildare St.

    The highlight of this auction is The Night has Gone, a 1947 oil by Jack B Yeats (€250,000-350,000).  There is plenty to choose from including Mountain Summit by Patrick Hennessy (€14,000-18,000), Slitty Morning Estuary by John Shinnors (€25,000-35,000), Cat by Karel Appel (€5,000-7,000) and Stained Glass light box by James Scanlon (€800-1,200).   The catalogue is online.     20TH CENTURY DESIGN AND IRISH ART AT DE VERES

    Classic 20th century and contemporary design furniture will come under the hammer at de Veres in Dublin on October 15.  Lots on offer range from Danish and Italian design furniture from the 1960’s to the contemporary Nomos table designed by Sir Norman Foster which is estimated at 1,400-1,800. The auction will feature work from designers including Arne Vodder,  Osvaldo Borsani and Philippe Starck.  Estimates for a selection that includes tables, chairs, sideboards, lamps, cocktail cabinets, Murano glass and mirrors are reasonable.

    A SALE OF IRISH ART AT DE VERES IN DUBLIN

    Viewing for the Irish art auction at de Veres on September 20 at 6 pm gets underway at Kildare St. at noon today. The 131 lots offer a mix of 20th century and contemporary art.  Traditionalists will be taken by two works. A Muted Appeal – the little match girl by Richard Thomas Moynan whose subject is a flower seller who worked at Chatham St. off Grafton St. The second traditional offering is Gathering Beans by Arthur David McCormick, a work purchased at the James Gorry Gallery in 1988. There is art by Sean McSweeney, Charles Brady, Diana Copperwhite, John Shinnors, Robert Ballagh, Norah McGuinness and a wide cross section of Irish artists.  Viewing is at de Veres, the auction will be held at the Royal College of Physicians on Kildare St.  The catalogue is online.

    ONLINE ART AND DESIGN AT DE VERES

    An online art and design auction will be held by Dublin based de Veres on July 18.  Emphasis is very much affordable.  It will include residual pictures from the collection of Michael Carroll, much of whose collection was sold in April.  All were acquired from Dublin galleries the The Dawson, Taylor and Oliver Dowling during the 1970’s and ’80’s.     SCOTT, YEATS, BLACKSHAW AND LE BROCQUY AT DE VERES

    Works by William Scott, Jack B. Yeats, Basil Blackshaw and Louis le Brocquy will be among the highlights at de Veres first art auction of 2017 on April 4.  The 160 lots include works from private collections which are fresh to the market. The catalogue cover lot is a 1973 Still Life by William Scott and it is estimated at 60,000-90,000. From the Woods Shadow by Yeats depicts a boy in the Phoenix Park. It is estimated at 80,000-120,000. A brace of paintings by Basil Blackshaw, Jack’s House I and 2, are individually estimated at 25,000-35,000.  There is a similar estimate on a tapestry by le Brocquy entitled Eden.   The first half of the sale is dedicated to the collection of the late Michael Carroll OF AIB, who bought much of his collection at the Dawson Gallery and the Taylor Galleries.  The auction goes on view at the Taylor Galleries, Kildare St. from April 1 and the venue for the sale is the Royal College of Physicians on Kildare St.  The catalogue is online.     THE IRISH ART MARKET NOW

    The big winter Irish art sales – by de Veres, Whytes, Morgan O’Driscoll and James Adam – grossed almost five million euro. This figure suggests that market for Irish art is in a state of rude good health.  The real story is more complex.  Bidding is brisk, turnover is up and the market has its problems. All auctioneers are finding it difficult to source top quality works.  “What incentive is there to sell when you can get no interest on your money” one asked.
    Right now this remains very much a buyer’s market. Prices are deflated and a correction upwards is long overdue.  The view is that this has to happen, the only question is when.  Meantime prices are far from stratospheric across all levels and ranges. Todays art buyer has become both discriminating and picky and there is a price above which they will not venture.
    The market in 2016 was unpredictable and threw up some surprising results.  Adams failed to get their main Yeats away at the latest sale but still grossed 1.35 million with 76% of lots on offer finding buyers. Morgan O’Driscoll capped off what he described as an unbelievable year with a Dublin sale that drew bidders from 12 countries and grossed over a million this month. The September sale at Whyte’s was the most successful since 2008 and a small west of Ireland landscape by Paul Henry made a hammer price of 87,000 at their latest sale. A large pastel by Sean Scully sold for 165,000 at the late November auction by de Veres, which grossed around 1.6 million. And Sean Keating’s Aran Woman and her Children sold for 130,000 at hammer a Mealy’s this month – the first time since 2008 that a Keating sold for a six figure sum. Sell through rates of around 75%-80% are being reported from most sales.

    A SUCCESSFUL NIGHT AT DE VERES SALE OF IRISH ART

    A Scully for 165,000 at hammer and a Yeats at a hammer price of 135,000 over a top estimate of 120,000 made for a successful night at de Veres sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin this evening. There was much competitive bidding for a sale characterised by strong works.  The Yeats, Caballero from 1949, measures just 14″ x 18″ and was a strong result.  Leo Whelan’s Waiting sold for 60,000 at hammer, A wet day, Cork by John Doherty made a hammer price at the top estimate of 20,000 , an abstract landscape by Mary Swanzy sold for 25,000 at hammer over an estimate of 20,000-30,000, The Night Garden by William Crozier made 13,000 over a top estimate of 10,000 and Camille Souter’s Time of Waiting made 24,500 at hammer over a top estimate of 20,000.

    Woman and a Bridget Reilly by Robert Ballagh made 12,000 over a top estimate of 6,000 and Man and a Tom Wesselman by the same artist made 25,000 over a top estimate of 12,000. A number of works by Patrick Scott made over the top estimate including Gold Painting 12.94 which made 32,000 at hammer over a top estimate of 30,000.  Amng other artists whose hammer prices exceeded the top estimate were Hughie O’Donoghue, Barrie Cooke, Patrick Graham, Neill Shawcross, Kenneth Webb, Liam Belton, Felim Egan and Charles Tyrrell.

    OUTSTANDING IRISH ART AT DE VERES

    A large pastel by Sean Scully highlights the sale of outstanding Irish art at de Veres at the RHA Gallery in Dublin on November 22 at 6 p.m.  This, according to the auctioneers, is one of the finest quality sales they have held in many years.  It includes a small collection owned by John de Vere White and his business partner Barry Smyth which was put together 15 years ago as part of a business plan.

    The pastel by Scully from the collection “1.6.92” was acquired from the Trinity Taylor Gallery in London and is estimated at 150,000-250,000. The collection, which includes signature pieces by Barrie Cooke, Patrick Collins, Hughie O’Donoghue, Tony O’Malley and John Shinnors, was at the Four Seasons Hotel (now the Intercontinental) in Ballsbridge for the past 12 years.

    All tastes are catered for in an auction which features collections of paintings by Patrick Scott and by Robert Ballagh.  There is work by Camille Souter, Louis le Brocquy, Melanie le Brocquy, Leo Whelan, George Russell, Donald Teskey, James H Craig, William Crozier, Basil Blackshaw, Gerard Dillon, Mary Swanzy, Nevill Johnson and William Conor.  The catalogue is online.
