    A CHANCE TO DRESS LIKE ZIZI JEANMAIRE

    You might never be able to dance like Zizi Jeanmaire, but you can dress like her thanks to the online sale of her Yves Saint Laurent wardrobe at Christie’s from January 13-26. The sale will pay tribute to the performer of “Mon truc en plumes”, who passed away last summer at the ground old age of 96. Saint Laurent was by her side throughout her career. The clothes and accessories that make up this wardrobe reflect the image of the queen of music hall with jet-black hair: often black, a stunning silhouette, glitter, embroidery and feathers. The admirers of the one who “had eyes that could empty a monastery”, as Boris Vian described her, will find around 100 lots including tuxedos, jackets, dresses, trousers, shoes and accessories.

    CHRISTIE’S LIVE STREAMED LONDON TO PARIS AUCTION MAKES £90.2 MILLION

    The live streamed London to Paris auction at Christie’s achieved £90.2 million last evening. Peter Doig’s Boiler House led the evening sale series when it sold for £13.8 million. David Hockney’s Portrait of Sir David Webster, sold to raise funds for London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, made £12.8 million. The Paris avant garde section was led by Pierre Soulages, whose Peinture 162 x 130 cm, 9 juillet 1961  sold for €5,392,500. Over 190,000 viewers tuned into the sales through Facebook, You Tube, Christies.com and Christie’s Live.

    NEW WORLD LITERATURE AUCTION RECORD FOR SHAKESPEARE

    Shakespeare’s First Folio sold for $9,978,000 at Christie’s in New York today. This established a new world auction record for any work of literature. The First Folio was included in ‘The Exceptional Sale’ and exceeded its estimate of $4,000,000-6,000,000. Bringing together for the first time the collected plays of Shakespeare it ranks as the greatest work of the English language and world literature. Already celebrated on its first publication in 1623, it has remained a highly sought-after masterpiece over four centuries.  Only six complete copies are known in private hands.

    After six minutes of bidding between two other phone bidders, the First Folio was bought via phone bid by Stephan Loewentheil, who commented: “William Shakespeare is incomparably the greatest writer in the English language and one of most important international cultural influencers in all history. The First Folio is the most important collection of plays ever published and revered throughout the world. It is an honor to purchase one of only a handful of complete copies of this epochal volume. It will ultimately serve as a centerpiece of a great collection of intellectual achievements of man. We at the 19th-Century Rare Book and Photograph Shop are pleased you have worked through Christie’s to obtain this wonderful treasure”.

    BRAVE NEW LIVESTREAMED WORLD OF MAJOR ART AUCTIONS

    A total of 280,000 people tuned in to Christie’s 20th century evening sale from New York last night. The sale, live streamed from the Rockefeller Center, realised US$340,851,500. The auction of 59 lots was sold 96% by value and 84% by lot. The top lot was Cy Twombly’s Bolsena which made $38 million, STAN, a T-Rex skeleton made $31,847,500 and there was a world record of $28,650,000 for a watercolour by Cezanne.

    A HOCKNEY TO RESCUE AN OPERA HOUSE

    David Hockney’s Portrait of Sir David Webster comes up at Christie’s Post War and Contemporary evening auction on October 22. Estimated at £11-18 million it is being sold to raise funds for London’s Royal Opera House. Sir David is the former general administrator of the ROH. Painted in 1971, it depicts Webster in the artist’s studio sitting on a Mies van der Rohe ‘MR’ chair before a glass table. The painting is being offered by the ROH and proceeds will contribute toward funding required to alleviate the financial impact of coronavirus, the most serious crisis the organisation has had to face.

    From 1975 until 1992, David Hockney would design sets for venues including Glyndebourne, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House. Inviting stylistic comparison with Hockney’s landmark double portraits produced between 1968 and 1975, Portrait of Sir David Webster demonstrates the meticulous exploration of space, perspective, lighting and compositional drama that would eventually come to inform his theatrical endeavours.

    MAJOR ART SALES LIVESTREAMED FROM NEW YORK

    Some of the most seismic artistic moments of the last 100 years, from Impressionist masters to Contemporary art, will be represented at Christie’s upcoming sales. The evening sale of 59 works of 20th century art on October 6 will be livestreamed from the Rockefeller Center in New York. The overall low estimate is more $300 million. The sale is led by Cy Twombly’s Untitled (Bolsena), 1969 ($35-45 million), formerly part of the Saatchi collection. Completed in the aftermath of the Apollo 11 mission works from the series fuse painting, drawing and writing into a lyrical thesis on time and space.

    In assembling this October series at a strong moment in the art market the auction house has utilised its technology, insight into client demand and logistical agility to re-imagine the auction model for a rapidly evolving world. Christie’s will conduct livestreamed sales of Post War and Contemporary art on October 7 and Impressionist and Modern Art on October 8. The sales will offer a new collecting opportunity ahead of the traditional November marquee sale week in New York. Standouts include an early example of the revolutionary drip painting technique by Jackson Pollock and a superlative watercolour by Paul Cezanne by in addition to works by Rothko, de Kooning and Matisse.

    EXCEPTIONAL COMMODES AT EXCEPTIONAL SALE

    These exceptional George III gilt bronze commodes date to the early 1760’s and are attributed to the celebrated English cabinet makers William Vile and John Cobb. After Thomas Chippendale they were arguably the most accomplished cabinet makers of the mid Georgian period, a golden age of carved mahogany furniture. On the open market for the first time since 1955 they come up at the Exceptional Sale at Christie’s in New York on October 14 from the collection of Abby and George O’Neill. Their passion for the arts was a tradition begun by Abby’s grandparents John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Selected works from the  collection will be offered at various sales at Christie’s in coming months.  The commodes are estimated at $150,000-$250,000.

    WORLD RECORD FOR A PRINT BY BANKSY

    There was a world record for a print by Banksy at Christie’s London Editions sale today. His Balloon Girl – Colour AP (Purple) sold for £791,250 over a top estimate of £350,000. The Banksy I Can’t Believe You Morons Actually Buy This Sh*t sale was 100% sold by lot and brought in £2,121,250. This is the highest total achieved for a dedicated Banksy auction. The London Editions achieved a combined total of £4,374,125.

    Modern British Art sale at Christie’s

    Works from a range of Modern British masters, including Elisabeth Frink, Bridget Riley, Graham Sutherland, Patrick Caulfield, Henry Moore and Walter Sickert come up at Christie’s Modern British Art sale on September 29. Irish art is represented by sculpture by F.E. McWilliam and paintings and drawings by Augustus John, William Orpen, Mary Swanzy and James Humbert Craig.

    DOLLY PARTON’S DULCIMER AT CHRISTIE’S NASHVILLE SALE

    Dolly Parton’s Swarovski-crystal bedazzled four-string dulcimer will lead an online only charity auction at Christie’s. Entitled “NASHVILLE: An Auction to benefit ACM Lifting Lives® COVID-19 Response Fund” it will lead a sale with items donated by some of the biggest names in country music including Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Marty Stuart, Bernie Taupin and Trisha Yearwood. The dulcimer has been owned by Dolly Parton for 30 years and was used to play “Jolene” during her 50th Anniversary performance at the Grand Ole Opry in 2019. It is estimated at $50,000-100,000.

    ACM Lifting Lives® is the philanthropic arm of the Academy of Country Music dedicated to improving lives through the power of music. Through partnerships with artists and strong ties in the music industry it funds music health programs and serves members of the music community who face unexpected hardship.
