    BEHIND CLOSED DOORS A SUCCESS AT BONHAMS

    The first live behind-closed-doors sale at Bonhams in Knightsbridge was a success with 84% sold by lot and 88% sold by value. The Modern British and Irish Art sale  saw a record number of bidders for the department. A section of 22 sketches by Cecil Beaton for The Book of Beauty all sold, many  above estimate. Irish works included William Crozier’s ‘Garden Storm’ which made £5,687, Cecil Maguire’s ‘Winter, Salt Lake, Clifden’ made £2,550 and Graham Knuttel’s bronze ‘Two Fish’ made £1,657 and his ‘Portrait of a Woman’ made £1,530.

    THE ART OF CECIL MAGUIRE AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL’S AUCTION

    No less than four works by the Irish landscape artist Cecil Maguire, who died last week, feature in Morgan O’Driscoll’s online Irish art sale this evening. Born in Armagh in 1930 he graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast in 1951, taught at Lurgan College and painted in his spare time. He began exhibiting at the RHA in 1971 and retired from teaching in 1981 to paint full time. He lived and worked for most of the year in Roundstone, Connemara. This painting of Roundstone Harbour dates to 1983 and is estimated at 3,000-5,000.

    ONLINE ART SALE BY MORGAN O’DRISCOLL

    This painting of Cross Street, Galway by Cecil Maguire dates to 1979. It is lot 12 at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online sale of Irish art which runs to May 11. The estimate is 3,000-5,000. There are 197 lots on the catalogue, which is online.

    ENCOURAGING RESULTS AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL ART SALE

    Cecil Maguire’s Fair Day, Clifden made a hammer price of 9,500 at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online sale of Irish art tonight. It was one of a number of encouraging results in O’Driscoll’s first online sale of 2020. Glenveagh Hills, Donegal by James Humbert Craig, Picnic by a River by Frank McKelvey and Farm Gate, Wicklow by Peter Collis each made hammer prices of 4,200; Fishing Village, Connemara by Maurice Wilks made 3,600, Venice by Arthur Maderson made 3,400 and Lake Scene, Evening by Percy French made 2,700. There will be an online sale of affordable Irish art by Morgan O’Driscoll on January 27.
