    • IRISH GLASS BY DESCENT FROM PENROSE FAMILY AT EXETER AUCTION

    No less than 15 lots of antique Irish glass by direct descent from the Penrose family, founders of  the Waterford Glass House in 1783, come up at Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood in Exeter on January 22.  Estimates range from £50 to £600 for a collection that includes drinking glasses, decanters, dshes, scent bottles, jugs and jars.  Wednesday will be the second day of the Winter Fine Arts Auction at Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood, the first to be held in the newly extended south west of England saleroom complex in Exeter.   Here is a small selection.     ANTIQUES AND ART AT DOLAN’S CORK SALE

    New for 2014 at Dolan’s opening sale of the year at Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Sunday, January 19 is a selection of antique pieces alongside art.  The catalogue cover features a circular bronze sculpture by John Coll of Patrick Kavanagh On Pembroke Road.  It measures 14 inches in diameter and is estimated at 1,500-2,000.  Other sculpture includes Birds in Flight by John Behan dating to 1985 (2,000-4,000) and Windswept by Joe Crean (250-350).  The auction of 240 lots offers a good selection of affordable Irish art by well known and emerging artists.  Antique pieces include a library table, sofa table, a Viennese clock, a selection of silver, an Irish 18th century oak stool and a German dog handlers medal from World War II as well as a Third Reich Eagle tunic breast badge.

    MARKET FOR VINTAGE POSTERS GROWS

    The market for vintage posters continues to grow and collectors will find plenty of opportunites at Christie’s  annual Ski Sale in London on January 22. Celebrating the golden age of travel, from the turn of the 20th century to the 1950’s the auction will comprise more than 200 lots of vintage posters and Louis Vuitton luggage.  Some of the finest artists and designers worked on the stylish advertisements as the first resorts competed to be recognised as the most glamourous. The 16th annual Ski Sale offers an opportunity to acquire Louis Vuitton trunks and suitcases in monogram, striped and checkerboard styles.  Here are some appetising posters:

    SOME JEWELS FROM TEFAF

    Haute Joaillerie is just one of many sections at TEFAF, the European Fine Art fair at Maastricht, The Netherlands from March 14-23.  Jeweller Gianmaria Buccellati is bringing a contemporary tulle bracelet made from yellow gold and diamonds entitled Ducale.  The bracelet is inspired by the Doge’s Palace, facing the Piazza San Marco in Venice  – the texture is soft, the lines of its design are light and the floral motifs of the palace’s façade are reproduced all along the band in yellow gold, set with brilliant-cut diamonds and enhanced by a contour of leaves.

    The 10.47 carat fancy vivid blue internally flawless briolette diamond pendant set in a delicate frame of white diamonds pictured below right will be displayed at the fair by Graff.  (Click on either image to enlarge it).

    TURNING £35 INTO £250,000

    January 9th, 2014

    A painting purchased for £35 from Sir Alfred Munnings some time before 1916 comes up at Bonhams in London on January 22 with an estimate of £150,000-250,000.  The Fair is one of the highlights of the 19th century paintings sale at New Bond St.  Two further paintings by Munnings feature in the sale. Grey mare and chestnut foal (£50,000-70,000) and Calling them in (£40,000-60,000).  At The Park Gate by John Atkinson Grimshaw, an artist known for his night scene paintings, is another highlight.  It is estimated at £150,000-£200,000.

    MEET M. DEBUSSY AND M. DUMAS

    Meet M. Debussy and M. Dumas.  You never know who you will happen across at TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) which in 2014 runs from March 14-23 at Maastricht in The Netherlands.  The commitment of this fair to excellence, expertise and elegance is evidenced in a range of quality rare works across categories from antiques and classical antiquities to design and jewellery.  It attracts the worlds most demanding connoisseurs.
    Exhibitors Yates-Trebosc-van Lelyveld have portrait busts of Alexandre Dumas fils and Claude Debussy.  The former was sculpted by Jean Baptiste Carpeaux in 1873 and exhibited in the Salon of 1874. Kept by Dumas until his death it was then transferred to the Comedie Francaise.  Other plaster examples are in the Louvre and the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Valenciennes.  The plaster bust of Debussy by Francois L. Simecek dates to 1937. It served as a model from which a bronze bust of the composer was cast. The bronze is now in the Musee de l’Opera, Paris.

    MAGNIFICENT GRIS STILL LIFE LEADS PRIVATE SWISS COLLECTION

    A magnificent still life by Juan Gris leads an exceptional private Swiss collection to be offered at Christie’s in London next month.  The 22 works from the collection will be offered across Christie’s sales of The Art of the Surreal and the Impressionist and Modern art evening sale on February 4 and at day sales on February 5.  The Gris still life is estimated at £13-18 million and the entire collection is expected to make more than £30 million.

    ROMAN 17TH CENTURY BUSTS FROM INCHBALD COLLECTION

    A pair of Roman 17th century carved marble busts after the antique of Augustus and Faustina the Younger is a highlight at Christie’s sale of the collection of legendary designer Michael Inchbald in London on January 22.  The busts were formerly part of the collection of the 9th Duke of Roxburghe at Carlton House Terrace in London and are estimated at £100,000-150,000.
    The Inchbald collection of 250 lots of antiquities, clocks, furniture, Old Masters, sculpture, silver, arms and Chinese porcelain is expected to realise around £1.2 million. Christie’s say it provides discerning collectors with a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire exemplary works.  Michael Inchbald (1920-2013) worked as the interior designer for the headquarters of the Bank of America and in luxury hotels such as the ballroom of the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge, London and the River Room at the Savoy, London.  He designed the First Class saloon for the QE2 and interiors for other liners including Carpathia, Franconia and the Windsor Castle.     DECORATIVE ANTIQUES FAIR CELEBRATES JANE AUSTEN

    Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park was published 200 years ago, in 1814. The author’s bicentary in 2017 is being marked this year at the winter edition of the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair at Battersea Park in London from January 21 -26 by the creation of two Regency interior styles.  Different social echelons in Regency England are reflected in two rooms created for the fair.  
    There is a fictional Mansfield Park room.  The author would have spent time in similar grand houses.  It is a mix of periods, typical of the time.  There is a Georgian bookcase,  a writing desk,  a sofa, William and Mary elbow chairs, a large Aubusson rug and Gainsborough style chairs of the sort that lovers of antique furniture avidly collect to this day. Her own home, in Chawton, Hampshire, would have been furnished in a more ordinary country style. A wallpaper pattern dating to c1780 has been specially produced by historical wallpaper makers Hamilton Weston for the Chawton cottage area of the display.  The fair is located at Battersea Park in London.  More than 140 dealers from the UK and Europe will take part. Interesting and unusual furniture, mirrors, lighting, accessories and works of art from the 17th to 21st centuries are displayed with flair for interior inspiration.

    THE ART OF FOOD AND DRINK AT CHRISTIE’S, SOUTH KEN

    The Art of Food and Drink at Christie’s, South Kensington on January 16  follows successful themed sales like Out of the Ordinary last September and The London Sale in 2012.  This is a one off sale of 180 lots of painting, photography, kitchenalia, posters and tableware.
