WINTER DECORATIVE ANTIQUES AND TEXTILES FAIR, LONDON

The Winter Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair at Battersea Park in London from January 20-25 will feature antiques, 20th century design and art. Organisers say this is the only antiques fair to cater for the interior decorating trade. In 2015 it will celebrate 30 years in business. The fair will offer an alpine inspired retreat in the foyer to celebrate all that is best about winter hideaways. In 2015 it will be followed by a Spring Fair from April 21-26 and an Autumn Fair from September 29-October 4.

THE ANNUAL SKI SALE AT CHRISTIE’S, SOUTH KENSINGTON

A fantastic group of 20th century posters advertising Swiss resorts like St. Moritz, Davos, Zermat, Gstaad and Verbier comes up at the 17th annual Ski Sale at Christie’s, South Kensington on January 22. This year the sale features an impressive group of skiposters from Switzerland as well as popular and rare posters from France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Norway and Australia, with a section dedicated to US and Canadian resorts. They will be offered alongside 25 lots of vintage Louis Vuitton travel luggage. Estimates range from £800 to £80,000. The 2014/15 winter sees Switzerland celebrate 150 years of winter tourism: St. Moritz and Davos welcomed their first guests in 1864 and 1865 respectively. This year marks the 150^th anniversary of the first Matterhorn ascent, which the village of Zermatt will celebrate with events and festivities. Here is a small selection from the sale.

WATERCOLOUR OWNED BY D-DAY COMMANDER DEMPSEY IN CORK AUCTION

A watercolour once owned by General Sir Miles Dempsey, D-Day Commander of the British Second Army, comes up at Dolan’s Irish art and antiques auction at Rochestown Park Hotel on January 18. Frank Egginton’s Geese on the shore near Renvyle is estimated at 1,200-1,600. General Dempsey, who was born in Cheshire of Irish descent, was knighted on the battlefields by King George VI in 1944, the first British officer to be knighted at battle since Agincourt in 1415.

Around 40 lots from Tulira Castle in Co. Galway, once the home of playwright Edward Martyn, are to be included. Among them is a complete Victorian dressing set with hallmarked handles in its original case. There is also some contemporary South American silver from Tulira as well as a three dimensional Victorian diorama of a provision store.

The catalogue cover is Arthur Maderson’s Towards the Lake Isle of Innisfree, which is estimated at 3,000-5,000. The catalogue for this auction of more than 200 lots of art, collectibles and antiques is online. Here is a small selection:

IRISH ART AND CULTURE AT ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

An exhibition on Irish art and culture during the 18th century is in preparation at the Art Institute of Chicago. Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design 1690-1840, opens on St. Patrick’s Day. It will present 300 objects drawn from public and private collections across North America and will include furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture, architecture, bookbindings, ceramics, glass, furniture, metalwork, musical instruments and textiles.

Organised thematically throughout six galleries – from portraiture to landscapes, from Dublin to the Irish country house – the exhibition will celebrate the Irish as artists, collectors and patrons. It will open on March 17 and run to June 7.

DUTCH AND FLEMISH PAINTINGS AT SOTHEBY’S NEW YORK

A remarkable assemblage of Dutch and Flemish paintings comes up at Sotheby’s in New York next April. The Weldon Collection, with more than 70 works, is expected to bring in around $30 million. It was assembled by the late Henry and June “Jimmy” Weldon over several decades.

Their collecting journey began in the 1960s with an initial focus on 17^th century Dutch and Flemish pictures, seeking out works by Balthasar Van der Ast, Rachel Ruysch and Ambrosius Bosschaert. Over the years, as their taste broadened, they added remarkable gems including an early still life by the German artist Ludger Tom Ring the Elder, a pair of paintings by Jean-Antoine Watteau and an extraordinary collaborative work by Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Younger. Yet, their love of the Dutch Golden Age remained a constant with masterworks by Hendrick Avercamp and Aelbert Cuyp entering the collection within the last decade. They also collected Asian art and Staffordshire pottery. Highlights will be toured to London and Amsterdam before the auction on April 22.

A RARE VIEW OF GRAND CANAL, VENICE BY MONET AT SOTHEBY’S

Claude Monet – Le Grand Canal. UPDATE: IT MADE £23.67 MILLION

An exceptionally rare view of Venice by Monet will lead Sotheby’s sale of Impressionist and Modern Art in London on February 3. Le Grand Canal dates to 1908 and is estimated £20-30 million. It has been exhibited around the world. It was at the National Gallery in London for eight years to 2014 and previously at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth and the Royal Academy in London.

Helena Newman, Sotheby’s Co-Head, Impressionist & Modern Art Worldwide, said: “The market for works by Claude Monet has now reached an all-time point of strength, with bidders coming from four times as many countries as a decade ago. Reflecting the outstanding quality and beauty of the work, Le Grand Canal was prominently displayed for eight years at The National Gallery, London. Given the painting’s rarity and exceptional quality, and the strong price of £19.7m achieved when we sold Monet’s Venice view Le Palais Contarini in 2013, we anticipate enthusiastic global interest prior to the sale in February.”

The painting has already been toured to Taipei. It will be in Hong Kong from January 9-12 and New York from January 21-23.

MODERN AND SURREAL WORKS AT CHRISTIE’S

Modern, Surrealist and Post-War works from a private European collection will come up at Christie’s in London on February 4. The collection showcases important examples by Modigliani, Miró, Magritte, Delvaux, Picasso, Giacometti, Moore, Fontana and others. The group is led by Joan Miró’s L’oiseau au plumage déployé vole vers l’arbre argenté, 1953 (£7-9 million) and Amedeo Modigliani’s Les deux filles, 1918 (£6-8 million). The full collection of 31 Modern, Surrealist and Post-War works of art is expected to realise a combined final total in excess of £64 million.

Olivier Camu, deputy chairman, Impressionist and Modern Art at Christie’s said that the collection spans the personal collection journey of a private collector over almost half a century from the 1960’s. “This collector’s discipline has always been to focus on quality rather than quantity, thus every painting and work in this collection is a signature work for the artist in question”. Pictured below from left to right is Miro’s L’oiseau, Femme de Venise V by Giacometti, Les Deux Filles, a rare double portrait by Modigliani and Les Compagnons de la Peur 1942 by Rene Magritte, which centres on the subject of transformation with four owls transforming from bird to plant world or vice versa.

IRISH FURNITURE AT THE ARMORY SHOW IN NEW YORK

Fine Irish antique furniture is sure to be much admired by the discriminating New York audience at the Armory Show in Manhattan from January 23 to February 1. The Fulham Road based London dealers Apter-Fredericks, who specialise in Important English Furniture, will bring an attractive Irish side table to the Winter Antiques Show, and a fine Irish bottle carrier. Both pieces date to about 1750. The side table has been in an American collection for many years.

FINE ENGLISH FURNITURE A FEATURE AT WINTER ANTIQUES SHOW
