Among the lots at Dolans auction on November 29 are a drawing by Sir William Orpen of The Roscommon Fusilier. The drawing depicts a young woman, with hand on hip, wearing a militia uniform, complete with military hat and plume. It is sketched on ‘Metropolitan School of Art, Kildare Street, Dublin’ paper. Orpen taught there in the early years of the 20th century. The sitter was Vera Hone and it is estimated at 9,000-12,500. A charcoal study of The Men of Aran by Sean Keating is estimated at 16,000-20,000. UPDATE: THE KEATING MADE €16,000 AT HAMMER.

This intricately carved Hongmu side table with drawers made a hammer price of €140,000 over a top estimate of €6,000 at the James Adam Asian art sale in Dublin today. The late Qing Dynasty table was formerly the property of Ferdinand Viscount Lesseps (1805-1894), the French developer of The Suez Canal and renowned diplomat. A Blue de Hue Dragon, Qilin and Thanh Tho porcelain plate also made €140,000 at hammer. It had been estimated at €6,000-€8,000.

Girl and White Umbrella by John Shinnors is lot 56 at Dolan’s November online auction which runs until the evening of November 29. It is estimated at 4,000-6,000. The sale features art by Sean Keating, Sir William Orpen, Kenneth Webb, Mat Grogan, John Morris and many other artists. More than 400 lots will come under the hammer at the Lynes and Lynes online sale in Carrigtwohill on November 27. The silver section includes a Cork silver tablespoon by Isaac Solomon, a Georgian silver ladle by Richard Sawyer, Dublin and a heavy tray by William Egan of Cork. Victorian pieces include a three door Victorian secretaire, an antique couch and an oak and brass hall stand. A pair of early 19th century porcelain plaques stamped Franz Xaver Thallmaier of Munich have an estimate of €2,000-€3,000. There is a Hornby train collection and comics from the 1950’s include The Dandy, The Beano, The Rover and The Eagle. More than 30 lots of books includes Evelyn Bolster’s History of Cork in four volumes and correspondence between Eamon de Valera and Jenny Dowdall of Cork. There will be interest too in a heavy cast iron water trough, a pair of old iron gates and an early plough by Pierce of Wexford. The catalogue is online.
This portrait of a young lady with a blue scarf is the catalogue cover lot for the James Adam sale of Fine Asian Art in Dublin next Tuesday (November 23). It is by Vu Cao Dam (1908-2000) who graduated from the fine arts school of Hanoi in 1931, in which year he participated in the Paris International Exhibition. He settled in France where he was mostly known for his sculpture. Influenced by Fauvism and the Paris School his creations lie on the edges of Asian traditions, particularly Chinese and Vietnamese art. This c1950 portrait is estimated at €30,000-€50,000. The sale of 440 lots is split into four sections, Arts of China and Himalaya, Arts of Vietnam and South-East Asia, Asian Painters and Arts of Japan and Korea.

JEAN ROYERE (1883-1950) Paire de fauteuils Boule dits Ours Polaire, vers 1947
These Boules chairs by Jean Royere achieved €1,292,000 at Christie’s Paris sale of he Collection Daniel Lebard : Through the Prism of Modernity on November 3. The world record price was achieved over an estimate of 300,000-500,000. The auction realised a total of €31,607,000, almost three times the presale estimate. The collection of design, photography and contemporary art was sold 100% by value and 97% by lot. With registered bidders from 32 countries the sale achieved new world auction records for 24 artists including Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Paulin and Takis.
The Table de bibliotheque eclairante created by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé and Andre Salomon for the Maison de la Médecine in 1951 made €1,016,000 ; the Tête à lumière, a remarkable ceramic lamp by André Borderie which made €325,000, thirteen times its presale estimate ; the Papillon chair by Matthieu Matégot sold for €206,250, five times its presale estimate and the Elysée pair of armchairs by Pierre Paulin quadrupled their estimate and made €200,000. New world auction records were also set for Bertrand Lavier, Michel Buffet, Edouard Wilfred Buquet, Daniel Firman, Morten Løbner Espersen, Hans Luckhardt, André Lurcat, Serge Mouille, Kirstin McKirdy, Barbara Nanning, Nicolas Schöffer, Huge Perignem, Philippe Pradalié, Maurice Pré, Ron Nagle, Bente Skjöttgaard, Roger Tallon, Valérie Belin, Vera Lutter and Raphaël de Villers. The 51 lots by Jean Prouvé made €11,195,000.
Collectors will be spoiled for choice at two sales in Cork on November 6. The venerable city firms of Marshs and Woodwards will hold online auctions on the same day. The Marshs sale is derived mainly from the estate of the late Professor David O’Mahony. The firm has already sold his house at The Hollies, Sunday’s Well. There is Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, paintings, watercolours, clocks, porcelain, Waterford Glass, gilt mirrors and sets of Cork 11-bar chairs. Prime lots include a Louis XV style satinwood and kingwood bureau plat, a Georgian breakfront serving table with brass rail, a Georgian Cork clock by Jas Upington and a Georgian inlaid and satinwood fold over card table Each of these lots is estimated at €1,500-€2,000. Coming in at a slightly lower estimate of €1,000-€1,500 are two sets of 11-bar and 9-bar Cork chairs, a Georgian tallboy and a Regency gilt wall mirror. A 19th century Anglo-Indian rosewood console table has an estimate of €800-€1,000.
House contents from Mallow and Castlegregory feature at the Woodwards sale. A large Nostell Priory partners desk is estimated at €1,500-€2,500. A pair of leather wingback library chairs, a Carlton House style desk, a Regency rosewood sofa table and a French inlaid longcase clock are all estimated at €1,000-€1,500. There will be interest in a Killarney inlaid arbutus teapoy (€500-€800) and a Georgian walnut davenport. Among the other lots of antique furniture are a George III bureau, a Georgian walnut knee hole desk, a Georgian round table with birdcage movement, a French bureau plat and an Edwardian chest on chest.

This antique Irish silver dish ring comes up as lot 78 at Matthews two day live online auction from Kells, Co. In Dublin there is viewing from 1 pm to 5 pm today and tomorrow, from 10 am to 5 pm on Monday and from 10 am to noon on Tuesday for the James Adam Mid-Century Modern sale which kicks off online at 2 pm on November 2. The centrepiece of this sale is Lilium II by Joseph Walsh. Too large for the auction room and too pricey for most of us it will be on view instead at the Throne Room in Dublin Castle. This marvellous intricate ash piece is estimated at €100,000-€150,000.
