    ANTIQUE FURNITURE AND HISTORIC PAINTING AT WOODWARDS IN CORK

    An historic Atkinson, a Queen Anne bureau bookcase, a 10′ Regency sideboard, a three pillar dining table and a Victorian four poster bed will feature at Woodwards sale in Cork on March 12.  A rare pictorial record of the visit of Queen Victoria to Cork Harbour in 1849 is contained in George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson’s oil painting of the Royal Yacht Squadron bringing Queen Victoria to Cobh. It is estimated at 25,000-30,000.  As a result of the visit the Cove of Cork was renamed Queenstown, reverting to Cobh in the late 1920’s. The double domed Queen Anne bookcase has an estimate of 5,000-8,00, the pillared dining table, which extends to 16″, is estimated at 6,000-10,000, the four poster at 2,000-3,000 and the sideboard at 4,000-6,000.

    There is an estimate of 3,000-4,000 on a pair of Coalbrookedale garden seats and a Georgian long case clock with parquetry inlay by John Hallifax (1694-1750), Barnsley  is estimated at 2,000-3,000. The catalogue is online. (See post on antiquesandartireland.com for February 18, 2016).

    SPRING FINE ART SALE AT FONSIE MEALY

    With a range that extends from a magnificent pair of George II Irish silver candlesticks to a pine rocking horse Fonsie Mealy’s Chatsworth spring fine art sale in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on March 8 promises to be brimful of interest.  The catalogue, which is online, features 765 lots,  everything from a diamond set brooch in a Greek key pattern to an almost matching pair of red boulle card tables.  There are Russian icons, sporting guns, wines and ports, sculpture and art including some 18th century Irish School MacNamara portraits from Baunkyle House, Corofin, Co.     ANTIQUE FURNITURE AT SHEPPARDS IN DURROW NEXT WEEK

    Antique and designer furniture is a feature at Sheppards two day sale in Durrow, County Laois on March 1 and 2.  The auction, entitled Classical Convergences, Antique, Art and Accent, features fine art, paintings and prints and decorative art and collectibles among more than 1,230 lots on offer.     THE PELHAM GALLERIES SALE AT SOTHEBY’S

    Fascinating acquisitions made by two generations of antiques dealers will come up at Sotheby’s in London on March 8.  An exceptional sale of furniture form the public and private collections of Alan Rubin of Pelham Galleries will come under the hammer  For almost 90 years, Pelham Galleries has been a mecca for international collectors, dealers and museums curators. The galleries in London and Paris have been instrumental in helping form some of today’s greatest collections. Treasures discovered by Alan Rubin, his father and uncle can be found in many of the world’s greatest museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Louvre.

    The sale will offer 180 lots with outstanding examples of English and European furniture, an exceptionally rich group of Italian decorative arts, chinoiserie masterpieces and a number of items reflecting Alan Rubin’s passion for early music. Alan Rubin said: “This sale marks a new chapter for Pelham Galleries which will now be run from our Paris gallery. The sale includes a number of pieces never previously offered to the public, some acquired by my family over sixty years ago. I hope they will give as much pleasure to their new owners as they have given to me.”

    FINE MING FURNITURE AT SOTHEBY’S IN HONG KONG

    An Asian private collection of Ming furniture comes up at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on April 6.  Every item in the collection was purchased from world-renowned Ming furniture dealer Grace Wu Bruce, revered as “the Queen of Huanghuali” in the world of Chinese furniture.  Rarer still, most of the pieces offered have been widely published, their quality rivaling similar pieces in the world’s leading museums. Eight pieces of furniture and ten table-top pieces will be offered in a dedicated sale.  Ming Furniture – An Asian Private Collection is in the Chinese Works of Art Spring Sale series.  Here is a selection:

    A MARTIN BROTHERS JAR AT DUBLIN AUCTION

    A c1895 Martin Brothers of Southall glazed pottery tobacco jar will highlight the James Adam sale of fine period interiors in Dublin on February 21.   Modelled in the form of a standing bird with a detachable head the tobacco jar and cover is estimated at 15,000-25,000.  The sale of 456 lots includes furniture, decorative arts, silver and paintings.     BUCK MINIATURES AT LYNES AND LYNES AUCTION

    A collection of miniatures – some by the Buck family – come up at Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on February 20. The auction is timely as an exhibition by Cork born Adam Buck previously at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is running at the Crawford Gallery until April 9.  Adam Buck was one of four children in an artistic family.  He  became one of the most sought after portrait painters of Regency England.  18th and 19th century Rowland family miniatures by the Buck family and one by Andrew Dunn is included in the auction. The Rowland’s were Mayors and Sherriffs of Cork in the 18th century. Rowland’s Lane off Mulgrave Road is named after them.
    The auction will include some lots from Cashel Palace Hotel and a clearance from a Lismore estate. Among the antique furniture is a Regency rosewood side cabinet (2,000-3,000); a collection of seven early 19th century hunting scenes woven in silk by Thomas Stevens (1,000-1,500); a Cork Regency card table (2,000-2,500);  a c1800 Cork Georgian cylinder desk cabinet with fine fluted legs (1,500-2,000); two fine military chests (1,000-1,500 each); a large Victorian pine house keepers cupboard (1,000-1,500); a late Georgian dining table (400-600) and an antique mahogany hunt table (300-500). The sale includes a c1760 Irish George II carved pier mirror (2,000-3,000); a portrait of a lady by James Butler Brennan RHA (1825-1889) (600-1,000);  a pair of 19th century gilt brass and porcelain candelabra (600-1,000); four Morgan views of Cork Harbour (100-200): a Victorian cast iron spiral staircase and some Persian rugs.

    LYNES AUCTION TO FEATURE LOTS FROM CASHEL PALACE

    A number of lots from the Cashel Palace Hotel, which has been sold, will come up at the Lynes and Lynes auction in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on February 20. Included is the racing painting that has been hanging in the bar for the last 45 years. By the artist Waldron West it features Irish and English characters at Cheltenham on Gold Cup day in 1950.  The estimate for the piece is 5,000-10,000.

    The auction includes and Irish Georgian mahogany long case clock by Fleming of Dublin.  It was located in the hallway of Cashel Palace, subsequently the fine well proportioned and welcoming lobby of the hotel.  It is estimated at 3,000-5,000.
