Sotheby’s delivered net income of $161.0 million in 2010, which apart from peak of the boom 2007 is the best yearly result ever. “It is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Bill Ruprecht, President and Chief Executive Officer. “The recovery of the global art market which was aided in part by the increased buying activity of clients from new markets certainly contributed to these results, as did the difficult decisions we had to make beginning in the autumn of 2008 – the headcount reduction, tightening of our cost structure and steadfast focus on auction commission margins – which have paid off considerably.
The positive moment is continuing into 2011. “Overall, aggregate auction sales through the first two months of 2011 solidly improved from the first two months of 2010. We hope that 2011 will be another strong year for Sotheby’s and for the art market,” Bill Ruprecht said.

A Limerick silver bowl by John Robinson, made c1735 and stamped with the Arms of Molloy sold for 20,000 after the inaugural sale at Limerick Auction Rooms. The highlight of this first sale in Limerick, which up to now has not had its own auction rooms, was a collection of Provincial Irish silver.
There was some disappointment during the sale when the main pieces, a rare Queen Anne Kinsale cup circa 1710 by J&W Wall and the Limerick bowl failed to find buyers. The bowl was estimated at 20,00-25,000, the cup at 40,000-50,000. The Kinsale silver had attracted interest from around the country and the auctioneers even had an active bidder from a Boston museum. It is now under active negotiation. A Limerick silver serving spoon by Patrick Connell sold for 1,000. The bowl was bought by a private collector in Kildare with Limerick connections.
The Limerick sale demonstrated considerable local interest. It also underlines how potential collectors need to accustom themselves to buying at auction. There were large numbers at the viewing and the sale. Buyers were hesitant during the auction. This changed afterwards. The organisers were busy with buyers for several hours after the auction ended and a further 30 lots sold on the day after the sale.

A Cork Republican Silver strawberry dish is to be the centrepiece of the Woodwards spring auction on April 6. The rarity of Cork Republican Silver is such that only about 60 to 80 pieces are thought to have been made.
All were fashioned during the Irish Civil War period from July to September 1922. The Irish Civil War was raging and communication between the cities of Cork and Dublin was cut off. Cork was held by Republicans, Dublin by the Free State troops.

Unable to send their silver to the Assay Office in Dublin yet determined to keep their silversmiths employed the venerable Cork firm of William Egan and Sons made their own stamp The firm had marks engraved, one a castle and the other a ship. It was not unlike the marks used by Cork silversmiths in the 17th and 18th centuries and not too dissimilar to the Coat of Arms of the City of Cork.
Silver made at this time in Cork was stamped with these marks and the initials of the firm, “WE”. When the situation became more normal and communications were restored Egans destroyed the Republican marks.
Woodwards will offer a Republic Silver strawberry dish, with the sides fluted in thirteen panels with wavy rims, bearing these Republican marks. The dish is eight and a quarter inches in diameter and weighs ten ounces. It is estimated to make 15,000-20,000 euro.
UPDATE: It was bid up to 9,500, now under negotiation.

These are some of the lots that feature at the O’Reilly’s auction at Francis St., Dublin on Wednesday, March 2. The sapphire and diamond cluster ring is estimated at 17,000-18,000, the target ring is estimated at 6,500-7,500, the amethyst and diamond brooch is estimated at 1,200-1,500 and the Art Deco diamond and sapphire plaque brooch is estimated 4,500-5,000.
The sale features around 290 lots of jewellery as well as silver and fine art.

at John Dunphy’s auction in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare on February 22. There are a couple of opium boxes, a blue and white ginger jar, a blue and while porcelain elephant, a monkey mother and baby and a rice bowl among 1,000 lots. All carry certificates of authenticity.
Discovered in a shipwreck off Vietnam in the 1990’s much of the cargo was sold in San Francisco. Museum curators competed for the best pieces, but there was a lot on offer and some remained unsold. Hoi An pieces regularly turn up on e-Bay. The pieces to be sold in Ireland range in estimate from 250 to 600.

silver bowl in Limerick silver features at the inaugural sale at Hamptons in Limerick on February 23. It is one of a number of precious and highly collectable silver items in this sale.
It is estimated that the ratio of Limerick pieces to Dublin silver is around one in 100. The rarity, scarcity and quality of Irish Provincial silver is one reason why it excites such interest among silver collectors. This bowl, made by John Robinson c1735, is plainly stamped with the Arms of Molloy. It is estimated at 20,000-25,000.
The sale of 440 lots features a rare Queen Anne Kinsale cup circa 1710 by J&W Wall. The organisers say it is the heaviest and most important piece of Kinsale silver ever on the open market. The estimate for this remarkable piece is 40,000-50,000.
There is also a Limerick marrow scoop by Joseph Johns c1750 and a Limerick bright cut skewer by Connell overstruck by William Ward. It is estimated at 4,500-5,500. Altogether there are over 30 silver lots in a sale which features furniture, art, jewellery and collectables.

In Dublin James Adam will hold a clearance auction, billed as an Attic Sale, on Wednesday, February 16 at 11 a.m. As the name suggests, this is a mixed bag sale with around 600 lots, most with low estimates. Here is a small sample.
UPDATE: IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL SALE WHICH ATTRACTED GOOD NUMBER OF VIEWERS. AROUND 90 PER CENT OF THE LOTS ON OFFER FOUND BUYERS.

This Tiffany diamond dress ring from 1964 on the left is one of the highlights at the first 2011 jewellery sale at O’Reilly’s of Francis St., Dublin. The sale takes place on Wednesday, February 2 at 1 p.m. The ring, complete with its original receipt, is estimated at 10,000-12,000.

It features antique and modern jewellery. The example on the right is a Victorian mourning brooch dating from around 1870. It is mounted in gold with a seed pearl surround and estimated at 700-800 euro.
The 319 lots sale includes engagement rings, diamond solitaires, a three stone diamond ring, bracelets, pendants, earrings, watches and gold jewellery. There is a small selection of Irish antique and later silver along with collectables and paintings.

THE greatest toy and train collection in the world is available for private sale through Sotheby’s as a single lot. Now on show in New York the Jerni Collection is estimated at 10 million dollars by Sotheby’s. Others say it could be worth $40/50 million.
What is on view throughout January and February represents about 20% of a collection of 35,000 objects assembled over 50 years by a single dedicated collector. The pieces date from roughly 1850–1940, and form an encyclopedic collection of toys and trains from every major European and American manufacturer including Märklin, Bing, Ernst Plank Carette and Rock & Graner, chronicling the ‘Golden Age’ of European toy manufacturing.
“Assembling this collection has been a 50 year journey for me,” commented Jerry Greene, 67, a Pennsylvania-based music executive who owns the collection. “They survived both world wars. For me it’s part of history.”
Half of the collection was made by Maerklin. Some are outfitted with working fountains and clocks; many are replicas of the actual buildings in Europe. A highlight is an elevated train platform from 1895 with two curved staircases parting like a curtain at the center. “I put it together piece-by-piece” Greene said. Like all true collectors the fun for him has been the search. Now that he is ready to part with it he thinks he will start collecting something else.
