    VINTAGE SIGNS AT CORK AUCTION

    A collection of vintage, pub memorabilia and enamel signs from the collection of Malcolm Whitehead of West Cork will be included in the sale at  Cork Auction Rooms on July 31.  Around 300 lots from the collection, formed over a period of 50 years, will come under the hammer.     This pair of antique bronze ormolu ewers has created quite a stir at Lynes  and Lynes in Cork.  They are due up at auction at a house sale in Glounthaune, Co. Cork on July 23.  Lot 110 is estimated at just 200-300, but it has around considerable interest.

    This is a small house contents auction on the premises at The Highlands, Glounthaune, Co. Cork for the estate of the late Peter Rota. It comprises antique and decorative furniture, rugs, collectible porcelain and glass, mirrors, clocks and household effects.  The catalogue is online.

    JANE FONDA COLLECTION AT JULIEN’S AUCTIONS

    You Bowie, me Jane.  Hard on the heels of Sotheby’s announcement of the sale of David Bowie’s Collection in London next November (see post on antiquesandartireland.com for July 14) comes the news that Julien’s Auctions in Hollywood will offer the Jane Fonda Collection in a live and online sale on September 23.  Property from the collection of the Oscar winning actress, author, fitness guru, philanthropist and producer will cover  items from both her career and her personal life. Highlights include an Andy Warhold 1982 pop lithograph of Fonda as Barbarella, her red and black striped leotard from the cover of the Jane Fonda Workout book, her collection of bespoke Atelier Versace garments and the Yves St. Laurent Oscar acceptance speech suit for Klute.     GARDEN STATUARY AT WOODWARDS SUMMER SALE

    The summer auction at Woodwards in Cork on July 23 features garden statues and benches as well as furniture.  Included is a pair of lions on plinths from Underhill House in Dunmanway (5,000-7,000), a pair of Georgian style cast iron seats (3,000-4,000), large garden vases (700-1,200) and a pair of reclining lions (700-1,200). Furniture includes a Victorian sofa table (1,200-1,500), a Victorian chest of drawers (300-400) and a large gilt framed wall mirror (500-1,000).

    CLASSIC WEEK AT CHRISTIE’S SCORES HIGHLY

    christiesThere were over 19,000 visitors to the various displays and auctions spanning  Decorative Arts, Antiquities, Old Master & British Paintings, Prints and Drawings, Books and Manuscripts and the Exceptional sale at Classic Week at Christie’s.  The week achieved a total of £109,038,888. There was a strong average sell-through rate of 87% by value across the 14 sales, with over 1,000 registered bidders from 50 countries, 695 registered online bidders and substantial cross-category buying.  The auctions were highlighted by Rubens’s masterpiece Lot and his Daughters, which at £44.8 million achieved the highest price for a work of art at auction this year.

    A Bach manuscript sold for £2.518 million at Christie’s in London today.  Dating from the mid to late 1730’s it is one of only three complete autograph manuscripts to have come to market in the last 30 years. No more than ten of Bach’s complete autograph manuscripts are thought to survive in private hands.

    At the same sale a leather Cossack jacket by Levi Strauss once owned by Albert Einstein made £110,500.  Einstein wore the jacket all the time.  It was acquired by Levi Strauss and Company for their archives. Both objects came up as part of an auction of Valuable Books and Manuscripts.

    A FIRST EDITION OF ULYSSES BY JAMES JOYCE SELLS FOR 9,500

    A rare first edition of Ulysses by James Joyce sold for a hammer price of 9,500 at Fonsie Mealy’s sale of the Dr. Phillip Murray collection of first editions in Dublin today.  Lot 383 was no 533 of 750 copies of the limited first edition of the edition published in Paris by Shakespeare and Co. in 1922.  It had been estimated at 6,000-8,000. A complete set of Broadsides with hand coloured illustrations published by Dun Emer and Cuala Press by Jack B Yeats and others made a hammer of 8,200. A first edition of A Clockwork Orange signed by Anthony Burgess made 5,000, a collection of short stories by George Moore extensively corrected in his own hand made 6,700 and lot 408, a limited edition of poems by Oscar Wilde signed by Wilde made 3,600.  A rare signed copy of the first UK edition of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee made 4,800 at hammer.

    The auction made 275,000 on the hammer with 85% of lots on offer sold.

    SUCCESSFUL SUMMER SALE AT MEALY’S, CASTLECOMER

    A painting attributed to Franz Snyders (1579-1657) made a hammer price of 37,000 at Mealy’s summer sale in Castlecomer today. It had been estimated at 35,000-55,000.  The auction included paintings, furniture, silver, glass, ceramics and decorative objects from the collection of art history Professor Anne Crookshank, now living in retirement in Donegal.  The Francis Johnston (PRHA) gold medal presented to Anne Crookshank in 2004 sold for 750 and a large Regency period Irish circular dining table made a hammer price of 5,000 in a successful sale where most lots found buyers.

    The sale realised 240,000 with 77% of lots sold.

    INTERESTING SELECTION AT LYNES AND LYNES SALE

    From Georgian bedside chests to large ships models, Nankin blue and white plates to an antique lead water cistern dated 1776 the selection of over 400 lots at Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill on July 16 is varied and interesting.  Drawn mainly from executors of various Cork estates the auction offers antique furniture, art, porcelain and collectibles.  Highlights include a Victorian breakfront bookcase (3,000-4,000), a large antique lead water cistern with owners initials WR dated 1766 (1,000-2,000) and a gilt oil of Venus and Adonis with an old Cork able of R and W Clarke.  The late 18th early 19th century work is  estimated at 1,000-1,500.
    Among the more unusual items are five large ships models, each estimated at 500-800.  Each one was made in Cork and measures over seven feet long.  They are the warships Bismarck, the USS New Jersey and the Yamato and the ocean liners Lusitania and Titanic.

    Collectibles like a fine pair of Georgian garden seats estimated at 1,000-1,5000 to old dolls (50-100), a section of old Nankin blue and white plates (100-200) and a Dutch silver oval jardiniere c 1900 (150-200) will create interest.  There is a section on books including works of Cork interest and the art will include Autumn Fruits by Gretta O’Brien (300-500) and a watercolour of St. Luke’s Church in Cork from Mahony’s Avenue by C.M. Doran (100-200).

    SIGNED FIRST EDITIONS BY IRISH, BRITISH AND AMERICAN AUTHORS AT FONSIE MEALY

    Irish authors are well represented at the sale of the Dr. Phillip Murray collection of modern first editions by Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin on July 12.   It includes about 2,200 American and British first editions, with about 75% either signed or inscribed. There are plenty of examples of signed first editions by writers like Kevin Barry, John Banville, Aidan Higgins, Neil Jordan, Colm Toibin and Desmond Hogan.  From Jaws to the Ballroom of Romance and A Clockwork Orange to Casino Royale the 580 lot auction promises something for all readers and collectors.
