    NORMAN ROCKWELL MASTERPIECE AT SOTHEBY’S

    Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Norman Rockwell’s masterpiece is among a selection of his genre paintings of American life to feature at Sotheby’s sale of American art in New York on December 4. The seven works are led by two icons of Rockwell’s extensive oeuvre –  Saying Grace ($15/20 million), voted as their favorite cover by readers of the Saturday Evening Post in 1955 –   and The Gossips ($6/9 million) as well as Walking to Church ($3/5 million) and a color study for Breaking Home Ties ($200/300,000), the final version of which set the artist’s current auction record when it sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2006 for $15.4 million. The paintings come from the descendants of Kenneth J. Stuart Sr., the artist’s longtime friend and art editor at the Saturday Evening Post and are estimated to acheive more than $24 million.

Elizabeth Goldberg, Head of Sotheby’s American Art department, commented: “To offer any one of these masterworks would be a great privilege. To present two of Norman Rockwell’s most iconic works in one auction truly is unprecedented. Kenneth J. Stuart Sr., who was both a gifted art editor and close friend, led Rockwell to produce what are arguably the greatest works of his career. The men were at their best when collaborating, which clearly is evident in this collection. Rockwell’s vision of American life has become so influential that many of his scenes feel deeply familiar, but when experienced in person these paintings illicit an emotional response that is far more powerful than anticipated.”

Rockwell created his first cover for the Saturday Evening Post in 1916 and, over the course of the next several decades, rose to become the publication’s most popular and successful illustrator. By the mid-1940s, Rockwell had honed his aesthetic and technique: by adopting a more sophisticated subject matter and compositional design – often accomplished with a series of photographs that he meticulously arranged – Rockwell began to craft the nostalgic and humorous vision of American life for which he is known today.  He created 322 covers for the post and the three illustrated here were particularly popular.

    Estimate $2/3 million

The art of the one of the first great collectors of Impressionism in Europe will come up at Sotheby’s in New York in November.   Christian Otto Zieseniss, pioneering German-American stockbroker and diplomat, assembled his collection in Paris in the early 20th century.  His collection descended through the family to the present owner and is estimated to make $11.7-17.2 million. The evening sale on November 6 will offer eight canvases by Gustave Courbet, Camille Pisarro and Alfred Sisley.  The day sale on November 7 will offer an additional ten works by Eugene Boudin, Camille Corot, Johan Barthold Jongkind and Stanislas Lepine.

Andrew Strauss, International Specialist in Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art department, said: “Assembled nearly a century ago, the Zieseniss collection represents a veritable time-capsule. With the exception of two works by Courbet and Sisley that were chosen to adorn the French pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, none of these paintings has been seen for several generations”.

KRUGIER COLLECTION AT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK IN NOVEMBER

    Friday, September 13th, 2013

Works from the collection of art market luminary Jan Krugier, who represented many major artists and was the world’s foremost Picasso dealer, come up at Christie’s in New York on November 4 and 5.  The sale entitled A Dialogue Through Art: Works from The Jan Krugier Collection will span the fields of Impressionist & Modern, Post-War & Contemporary, Old Masters, American, Latin American, and African Art. More than 150 lots are expected to achieve $170 million.

Born in Poland in 1928 Jan Krugier survived Auschwitz and moved to Paris in the late 1940’s. After being persuaded by Alberto Giacometti to become an art dealer he became a towering figure in the art world. Among the modernist highlights of the evening sale is Wassily Kandinsky’s Herbstlandschaft – the mountain in the painting is a metaphor for that peak which the artist as prophet must ascend.  The lead work of the Picasso group is Tête (Maquette pour la sculpture en plein air du Chicago Civic Center), a sheet metal maquette conceived and created by Picasso during 1962-1964 and estimated at $25-35 million.

His collection toured to enthusiastic crowds in Berlin, Venice, Madrid, Paris, Vienna, and Munich in a series of exhibitions entitled ‘The Timeless Eye.’ Krugier dedicated these landmark shows to his family and those who had perished in the Holocaust, as well as to the men and women like himself who had survived, to anyone “forever locked in the prison of their memory.”  Jan Krugier died in 2008. (Click on any image to enlarge it).  UPDATE: PART ONE OF THE COLLECTION, ENTITLED A DIALOGUE THROUGH ART, REALISED $92,533,000.

MAGNIFICENT SILVER WITH RUSSIAN IMPERIAL PROVENANCE AT CHRISTIE’S

    Friday, September 13th, 2013

Magnificent silver with Russian imperial provenance will come up at Christie’s in Paris next November 8.  A soup tureen on stand and a set of four massive candlesticks from the Orloff service will highlight a sale of decorative arts from the 13th to the 19th centuries entitled “Le gout Francais”.  Commissioned in 1770 by Empress Catherine II of Russia from the finest Parisian silversmith of the time Jacques Roettiers (1707-1784) and his son  Jacques-Nicolas (1736-1788) the service comprised more than 3,000 pieces. It is one of the earliet expressions of the Neo-classical style in silver.  Items from this legendary service have occasionally appeared at auction, but it is more than 20 years since such a significant group has been presented to the international market.
