    A fancy coloured diamond ring is the most expensively estimated lot at the James Adam evening sale of fine jewellery and watches in Dublin on December 5.  The seven carat cushion shaped diamond is estimated at 50,000-80,000. There are rings, watches, bangles, necklaces, earrings and brooches among the offerings.  The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

    AN ORIGINAL BOOK OF PLATES BY JAMES MALTON AT FONSIE MEALY

    Leinster House looks positively serene in this 1791 view by James Malton. It is part of an original coloured copy of a book of plates – colourfully described by the auctioneers as Ireland’s greatest plate book – which comes up at Fonsie Mealy’s rare book sale at the Tara Towers Hotel, Dublin on December 5.

    Malton, who had been employed as a draughtsman by James Gandon during the building of the Custom House – he was dismissed for breaches of confidence and other irregularities – completed a series of drawings of Dublin buildings from which the famous set of views was engraved.

    His work offers what is undoubtedly the most important pictorial record of Dublin life in the late 18th century. The book, estimated at 7,000-9,000, is part of a sale of rare books, manuscripts, maps and fine wines.

    ROBERT TAYLOR CARSON STUDIO AT WHYTE’S

    Paintings from the studio of Robert Taylor Carson HRUA (1919-2008) will comprise the opening section of Whyte’s Christmas auction in Dublin on Monday, December 11.  The artist is synonymous with the Donegal landscape.  Offered on behalf of his estate the paintings in oil and watercolour date from 1947 to 2004.  Reserves are low.  Here is a small selection:

    A HOLY GRAIL OF IRISH ILLUSTRATED BOOKS

    Fonsie Mealy will offer a book of Irish photos described as the Holy Grail of  illustrated Irish books at his rare book sale at the Tara Towers Hotel in Dublin on December 5.   W D Hemphill of Clonmel was one of the pioneers of early photography in Ireland. HIs book of stereoscopic illustrations of Clonmel and the surrounding country, including abbeys, castles and scenery, dates to 1860, is in fine condition and estimated at 7,000-10,000.
    Also of great topographical interest is an original Irish coloured plate book of James Malton’s views of Dublin taken in 1791. This is estimated at 7,000-9,000. Other rarities at this large upcoming sale include the unauthorised US first edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses published in eleven issues of Two World’s Monthly.  This is estimated at 1,200-1,500.
    The auctin will include the library of the late Capt. H.C.P. Hamilton of Moyne, Co. Laois, the final portion of the library from Barne, Co. Tipperary, books from the family of W.B. Yeats, the fishing library of A.A. Luce and maps, atlases, manuscripts and fine wines.

    MAUREEN O’HARA’S JEWELS MAKE FOR COMPETITIVE BIDDING

    THIS Colombian emerald pendant sold for 70,000.

    The jewellery of Hollywood film star Maureen O’Hara attracted competitive bidding at Sheppard’s sale in Durrow today. An 18 carat white gold brilliant cut 8.3 carat diamond ring with baguette diamond shoulders sold for 120,000 at hammer.  A solitaire 5.03 carat diamond ring made a hammer price of 46,000.

    A natural Colombian emerald pendant made 46,000 and a Colombian emerald and brilliant cut diamond bangle sold for 70,000.  Her full length Dior white mink coat made 2,800 at hammer.

    AESTHETIC REVIVAL TABLE FROM ROBINSON COLLECTION FAILS TO SELL

    The Aesthetic Revival table.

    An Aesthetic Revial oak library table from the collection of former President Mary Robinson failed to sell at Sheppards in Durrow today.  The table, from Massbrook Lodge in Co. Mayo, had been estimated at 5,000-7,000.  By Holland and Sons London it contains an expansive oval tooled leather top above a leaf carved frieze.

    Other lots from the Robinson collection, like a Dublin George III hanging hall lantern originally from a doctor’s house on St. Stephen’s Green, easily found buyers.  The lantern sold for 1,800 at hammer against and estimate of 1,500-2,500.  The sale continues on November 29 with lots fro the collection of the late actress Maureen O’Hara.

    A HOUSE SALE BY DE VERES AT KILLINEY

    Around 350 lots will come under the hammer when de Veres auction the contents of Ballybrack House, Killiney, Co. Dublin on December 3 at 3 p.m. Racing art in the auction include a selection of paintings by Peter Curling, hunting and Snaffles prints and a bronze bust of Lester Piggott by Gary Trimble.     EVENING MONTREUX BY SIR JOHN LAVERY AT WHYTE’S

    A Swiss scene by Sir John Lavery is the leading lot at Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art at the RDS at 6 pm on November 27.  Evening Montreux shows Lake Geneva and a mountainous landscape beyond.  Paul Henry’s Coomasaharn, Co. Kerry has an estimate of  €50,000-70,000 and a Mayo view by Henry is estimated at  €50,000-60,000.

    There are eight works by Basil Blackshow with estimates ranging from 2,000 to 70,000 for Grey Horse in a Stable. Peony 1991 by Louis le Brocquy (35,000-45,000), Girls and Dogs by Dan O’Neill ( €25,000-35,000) and The Dodder in Flood by Jack B. Yeats ( €30,000-40,000) are among the other top lots.  The catalogue cover is Italian with Fowl 1948 by Gerard Dillon ( €50,000-70,000).  A later work by Dillon, Holy Island is estimated at  €30,000-50,000. There are 183 lots in total from artists including William John Leech, Percy French, Frank McKelvey, Maurice Wilks, George Campbell, Barrie Cooke, Tony O’Malley, Felim Egan and works from the estate of Robert Taylor Carson.

    UPDATE:  THE sale grossed 810,000.  Ian Whyte commented:   “We are very pleased with the results, which brings the total of Irish art sold at auction in the past week to over €4 million, which demonstrates the continuing strength of the Irish art market and the confidence collectors have in it. It has been our best year since 2007, albeit still only 50% of our turnover in that year, so, hopefully, there is still potential to improve”

    DIAMONDS AND DIOR MINK OWNED BY MAUREEN O’HARA

    Maureen O’Hara’s Christian Dior full length white mink coat comes up at Sheppards sale in Durrow next Wednesday. Trimmed with Arctic fox fur and lined with silk it represents the pinnacle of Hollywood glamour and luxury.  The west Cork collection of the Hollywood actress, who died in 2015, includes diamond rings and  a Colombian emerald pendant and bangle.

    The two day sale next Tuesday and Wednesday also features the collection of former President Mary Robinson  who is downsizing from Massbrook Lodge in Mayo to Dublin.  Viewing in Durrow is from 10 am to 5 pm today, tomorrow and Monday.
