    VICTORIAN ENGLISH IMAGES AT CHRISTIE’S INTERIORS SALE

    There is something nostalgic and even retrospective about these two Victorian images created by English artists abroad in the 19th century.  Neither work is expensive.  Each one features at the next Christie’s Interiors sale at South Kensington in London on August 9.

    The work on the left is by Elijah Walton (1832-1880).  No prizes for guessing the title of this pencil watercolour and body colour on paper.  An Alpine Landscape  is estimated at just £400-600.  The other work, which Christie’s have catalogued as English School 1847 is called Cypresses on the Bosphorus, inscribed and dated ‘Cyprepes – on The Bosphorus 1847’ (on the mount).  It is unframed and the lot includes another image of the mouth of the Bosphous at the entrance to the Black Sea by W.B. Urmston.  The estimate is £500-700.  Both images are © Christie’s Images Limited 2011.

    WEST CORK NO RESERVES ART AUCTION 100% SOLD

    THE Morgan O’Driscoll no reserves art sale of work by west Cork based artists on July 31 was 100 per cent sold.  The top lot was Martin Stone’s oil of Ballydehob, which made 1,600.  In general the 111 works sold for prices which were generally under the low estimate.  There was a big attendance at the Skibbereen viewing and sale. The no reserve auction demonstrated a strong appetite for value in the market in the teeth of Ireland’s continuing recession.

    AUCTION OF WORK BY WEST CORK BASED ARTISTS

    THE west Cork artists no reserves auction in Skibbereen on Sunday, July 31 is arousing considerable interest.  The sale of 111 lots by locally based artists is wide ranging and timed to coincide with the August Bank Holiday weekend height of the holiday season in the area. It follows two no reserves studio sales by Morgan O’Driscoll already this year.  Each one of these proved to be popular and demonstrated that, even in the teeth of a major recession, Irish people will purchase the work of artists if the price is considered to be right.

    DOLAN’S SUMMER ART SALE AT BALLYNAHINCH CASTLE, CONNEMARA

    Dolan’s Irish art auction house  will hold a summer sale of 200 works in a marquee in the grounds of Ballynahinch Castle, Connemara, Co. Galway on Wednesday, August 3 at 2 p.m.  On offer is a broad cross section of work from a variety of emerging and established Irish artists.  Here is a selection of what is on offer (click on any image to enlarge it):

    DEATH OF LUCIAN FREUD

    The artist Lucian Freud has died in London aged 88.  He had been one of the most highly regarded living artists in the world, known particularly for his uncompromising paintings of nudes.  His work is much sought after by collectors and museums.

    A grandson of psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud, he was born in Berlin in 1922 and fled to Britain with his jewish family in 1933. He became a British citizen in 1939.

    In a statement his New York-based art dealer and close friend William Acquavella said the realist painter died on Wednesday following a brief illness, but gave no further details.

    The painting above, Woman Smiling, 1958-59, is the only single portrait by Freud of Suzy Boyt who was to mother five of the artist’s children. It was sold by Christie’s in London in June for £4,745,250.  Christie’s described it as the most significant work by Freud to be offered at auction since Benefits Supervisor Sleeping sold at Christie’s New York in May 2008 for $33.6 million – a world record price for a work by a living artist.  It was bought by Roman Abramovich.

    As a result of Mr. Freud’s death the new most expensive work by a living artist is  Flag by Jasper Johns.  Part of the Michael Crichton collection it sold on May 11, 2010 at Christie’s New York for US$28,642,500.

    GLOBAL AUCTION SALES UP 10% AT CHRISTIE’S, ART MARKET HEALTHY AT ALL LEVELS

    Christie’s International today announced worldwide sales for the first half of 2011 of £2.0 billion ($3.2 billion), up 15% by £ on last year’s figure of £1.7 billion. In Continental Europe and the UK, auction sales totalled £803.4 million ($1.3 billion), up 24% in £ on the first half of 2010; sales in the Americas totalled £577.7 million ($941.6 million), down 13% in £; sales in Asia totalled £296 million ($482.5 million), up 48% in £ and sales in the Middle East totalled £6.6 million ($10.8 million), up 10%.
    Global auction sales increased by ten per cent, private sales are up by 57% on the first half of 2010, 19% of clients bid on-line via Christie’s Live and new clients rose by 14 per cent. Record results in Hong Kong reaffirm it as a growing global art hub and Asia as the fastest growing art market in the world. The strength of the European art market was also firmly illustrated.  Christie’s New York saw fewer collections come to the market after the blockbuster year last year but a continuing renewed confidence in the market for fine art, antiques, jewellery and watches and wine driven by increasing participation from private and trade collectors.
    Christie’s report that collectors at the highest levels are increasingly participating in the market across multiple categories. These include the “Medici” collector – or client who pursues the very best works of art across multiple categories, evoking the prosperity and taste of the Renaissance Medici dynasty.

    O’CONOR AND EGGINTON AT BONHAMS

    THE artist Frank Egginton, well known for his west of Ireland landscapes, featured at Bonhams sale of modern pictures at Knightsbridge in London on July 19.  The Windy Gap, Co. Kerry sold for £1,080 inclusive of buyer’s premium.

    At the same sale La Rivière by the Irish artist Roderic O’Conor sold for  £14,400.  The work is stamped Atelier O’Conor.

    ORIENTAL OKIMONO, JADE AND BRONZE AT HEGARTY’S BANDON SALE

    An Oriental collection gathered in the Far East –

    Early 20th century large Satsuma jar. UPDATE: IT MADE 1,150

    including okimono, Satsuma, jade and bronze enamel – will feature at the Hegarty’s auction in Bandon on July 24.  The Ellison collection has been consigned from west Cork.  The late Georgette Ellison, whose husband was a high ranking US military member, started the collection post World War II while they were stationed overseas.  Included is a silver and lacquer smoking companion set presented by Hirohito/Emperor Showa to Mrs Ellison.

    The sale of 350 lots also features some Irish Regency furniture, a Cork two door library bookcase, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian occasional furniture, a one owner collection of 30 lots of Irish art and twenty lots of silver.

    KLIMT MASTERPIECE AT SOTHEBY’S, NEW YORK

    Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece Litzlberg am Attersee (Litzlberg on the Attersee) promises to be an important highlight of Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern evening sale in New York next November 2.  It is a dramatic view of the lush environs of Lake Attersee in western Austria.  Painted with Klimt’s sumptuous palette and jewel-like surface it is estimated to make more than $25 million.

    Klimt’s Kirche in Cassone (Landschaft mit Zypressen) (Church in Cassone – Landscape with Cypresses) made an auction record for a landscape by the artist when it sold for  £26.9 million ($43.2 million) at Sotheby’s London in February 2010.
    Both paintings were originally in the collection of Austrian iron magnate Viktor Zuckerkandl and his wife Paula.  They were stolen after the annexation of Austria in 1938. Each has been restituted to Georges Jorisch, great-nephew of Viktor, after intensive research revealed that his memory of the works hanging in the family’s home in Purkersdorf was correct. Litzlberg am Attersee was returned to Mr. Jorisch late last week from the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. A portion of the proceeds from its sale will be donated to that museum for the building of a new extension.

    O’DRISCOLL AUCTION OF WEST CORK BASED ARTISTS

    THE rugged coastline and wild landscape of west Cork has long fascinated artists.  William Crozier, the Scottish born artist who died on July 12 aged 81, had spent part of the year at his west Cork home since 1984 and was an important figure for local artists.  His work was characterised by vibrant colours which became associated, in many minds with the west Cork landscape.
    Auctioneer Morgan O’Driscoll will conduct a sale of work by west Cork based artists in Skibbereen on Sunday, July 31 at 5 p.m.  This will be a no reserve sale. It follows on from several successful no reserves sales organised by Morgan O’Driscoll in latter months. The catalogue, which is on-line, features 111 works.  Here is a small selection:
