  • YEATS, LAVERY AND HENRY AT WHYTE’S IRISH ART SALE

    The Irish art sale at Whyte’s in Dublin on November 28 contains an interesting selection with plenty to attract collectors at all levels. The sale will take place at The Clyde Rooms in the Royal Dublin Society.  The catalogue is on-line.  The Street in Shadow by Yeats shows the artist accompanied by his wife, Cottie, standing on O’Connell Street in the shade of the GPO, looking directly out at the viewer. Their pose is silhouetted against two of the city’s most famous landmarks, the distinctive Clerys department store and spiralling Nelson’s Pillar.  It is estimated at 50,000-70,000. Here is a small selection (click on any image to enlarge it):

    Sir John Lavery RA RSA RHA (1856-1941) THE HOUSE-TOPS, TANGIER, 1912 (20,000-25,000) UPDATE: THIS MADE 23,000.

    Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) ALTAN LOUGH, DONEGAL c.1933-34 (40,000-50,000). UPDATE: THIS WAS THE TOP LOT. IT WAS SOLD FOR 75,000 TO AN INTERNET BIDDER.
