JOHN DOHERTY AT TAYLOR GALLERIES

An exhibition by photo realist artist John Doherty has just opened at the Taylor Galleries at Kildare St. in Dublin. “Recent Paintings” is his 11th solo show at a gallery which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Doherty’s images, which have proved to be popular in the salesrooms, point towards the human stories that exist behind the facades of places and things, and bring the past back to life.

Born in Kilkenny in 1949 he studied architecture at Bolton St. before moving to Sydney to pursue a career as an artist. He has shown widely in Ireland and Australia and his work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, the Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, the Irish National Stud collection, AIB Dublin and London and Artbank Sydney. The show at Taylor continues until May 18. (Click on either image to enlarge).

MOST IMPORTANT PAINTING BY BARNETT NEWMAN EVER AT AUCTION

THE most important painting by Barnett Newman ever to appear at auction comes up at Sotheby’s in New York on May 14. Onement VI stands as a masterwork of the entire Abstract Expressionist movement. Of the six paintings in the series two are in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, one is at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford and one at the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, Ohio.

The paintings of the Onement series are characterized by the distinctive stripe running down the centre of the canvas. The zip is considered a defining turning point in the artist’s practice and was formed by using tape and allowing the blue paint to bleed irregularly into the central area. Onement VI is the most momentous of the six paintings in the series. The vast 8½ x 10 feet canvas overwhelms the viewer with cascading washes of vibrant blue intersected by the artist’s revolutionary vertical ‘zip.’

This is one of only two Onement works remaining in private hands. Onement VI is estimated to fetch $30/40 million. Tobias Meyer, Worldwide Head of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s commented: “Onement VI is one of the most significant pieces of Contemporary Art I have handled in my 20 years at Sotheby’s.”

INTERIORS AND EXTERIORS AT SHEPPARDS THREE DAY SALE IN DURROW

The three day sale at Sheppards in Durrow, Co. Laois on April 30. May 1 and May 2 is titled exceptional interiors and exteriors. The catalogue lists 1,624 lots of antique furniture, garden furniture and fine and decorative art including Oriental item. EARLY CAST OF RODIN’S LE PENSEUR AT SOTHEBY’S NEW YORK

An early cast of Auguste Rodin’s Le Penseur from 1906 is a highlight at Sotheby’s evening sale of Impressionist and Modern Art in New York on May 7. It is one of three bronzes from Rodin’s masterpiece The Gates of Hell, one of the most celebrated sculptures ever created, and is estimated at $8-12 million.

Commissioned in 1880 and inspired by Dante’s epic poem The Divine Comedy, the monumental portal known as La Porte de l’Enfer is the defining project of Rodin’s career. It occupied him for 37 years. Many of his greatest works derive from it. Where The Thinker represents the head, or reason The Kiss is a canonical image of the heart. Originally intended for the left side of The Gates of Hell, the work portrays another scene from Dante’s Inferno: the ill-fated lovers Paolo and Francesca, shown in a passionate embrace. The cast of Le Baiser on offer in May was made in April 1909 and is estimated at $800,000-1.2 million. Ugolin et ses enfants was cast only three times during Rodin’s lifetime. On offer is the first of these, dating from 1883 and estimated at $800,000-1.3 million.

RIJKSMUSEUM RE-OPENS TODAY

THE Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam – which houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age – re-opens to the public today. It follows ten years of closure. Renovation took five years longer than expected .

Masterpieces are displayed in a sequence of 80 galleries in a new presentation which fuses art and crafts chronologically. Art is displayed alongside objects like glass, porcelain and furniture that was around when the work was created to illustrate the cross-pollination between decorative and visual arts.

The renovation cost 375 million euro. Changes include a new entrance, an Asia Pavilion, and two vast courtyards with light from above. . The museum is expected to attract up to two million visitors annually and will be open 365 days a year.

HENRI’S LITTLE IRISH GIRL MAKES $197,000 AT SOTHEBY’S

Little Irish Girl by Robert Henri sold for $197,000 at Sotheby’s in New York.

A Little Irish Girl made $197,000 at Sotheby’s sale of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture in New York on April 11. The early 20th century painting by Robert Henri (1865-1929) was the cover lot on the catalogue for a sale which brought in over $4 million. Henri was one of the organisers of the Armoury Show in New York a century ago and became leader of the movement known as the Ash Can School. His students at the New York School of Art included Edward Hopper and Joseph Stella.

He was a regular visitor to Achill Island in Ireland and he finally purchased a house here in 1924. Little Irish Girl almost doubled its pre-sale high estimate of $100,000.

BASQUIAT RECORD LIKELY TO FALL AT CHRISTIE’S IN MAY

THE record for a work by Jean Michel Basquiat is likely to be broken with Dustheads at Christie’s evening auction of Post War and Contemporary art in New York on May 15. Dustheads, estimated at $25-35 million, was executed in 1982 when Basquiat was at the height of his creative development and fame. Set against a backdrop of intense, inky blackness the brightly coloured figures represent the ultimate tour de force of expressive line, colour and form that embodies his work. Combining raw, unabashed emotion with unrivalled draughtsmanship it is the epitome of Basquiat’s signature style. Christie’s say it is likely to break the $26.6 million record they set for a 1981 work, Untitled, last November.

The sale features the most important work by Jackson Pollock to appear at auction in two decades. No. 19, 1948 is estimated at $25-35 million and is one of the drip paintings that Pollock made in a legendary three year creative burst from 1947 to 1950. These works re-shaped the history of 20th century art.

UNIQUE MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF KEATS AT BONHAMS

A miniature portrait of the poet John Keats will be sold at Bonhams in Knightsbridge on May 30. Bonhams believe it to be unique. The portrait, discovered in the United States, was known as it was reproduced in an ‘Autobiography of John Keats: Compiled from His Letters and Essays’ by Earle Vonard Weller (Stanford University Press, 1933).

Jennifer Tonkin, Head of Miniature Portraits, comments: “We believe this miniature to be a unique image of Keats, one of our greatest poets. The majority of contemporary portraits of Keats derive from the miniature painted by his friend, Joseph Severn, in which he is seated with his left hand to his face but this image differs from this and all other extant portraits of the poet in that it portrays him standing against a sky background. Given his untimely death at the age of twenty-five, this image has the power to move anyone who has ever admired Keats’ work.”

Catalogued by Bonhams as ‘Circle of Charles Hayter (British, 1761-1835)’ it shows him wearing a black double-breasted coat and waistcoat, white frilled chemise, stock and tie. The miniature is housed within a gold frame, the reverse glazed to reveal sprays of dark blonde hair decorated with split seed pearls and gilt-wire, set on opalescent glass. The lower rim is also engraved, ‘John Keats 1795-1821’. Most portraits of Keats are posthumous and based on the miniature by Joseph Severn. This one is estimated at £10,000-15,000.

135TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF DUBLIN PAINTING AND SKETCHING CLUB

One of Ireland’s largest national group shows, the 135th annual exhibition of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club, is at the Concourse Gallery, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Hall for two weeks from April 8. There is a European theme this year to mark Ireland as the current holder of the EU Presidency. The show runs until Sunday, April 21 and features work from more than 80 artists.
