    WATERCOLOUR SOCIETY OF IRELAND EXHIBITION OPENS TODAY

    Paintings by some of the finest floral and botanical artists in Ireland will be on show at the Water Colour Society of Ireland’s 161st annual exhibition, which opens today at the Concourse Gallery at the Dun Laoghaire County Hall. Ireland’s largest exhibition of watercolours and one of the country’s biggest group art shows will run until October 4. There is work by more than 100 Irish artists including floral artists and botanical illustrators Siobhan Larkin, Yanny Petters, Patricia Jorgenson, Anne McLeod, Sue Van Coppenhagen, Nayana Sandur and Nicola Lynch Morrin.  The show will feature more than 280 paintings in watercolour, gouache and pastel, drawings and limited edition prints.

    A YEATS AT ADAMS SALE OF IMPORTANT IRISH ART

    THE Old Landing Place by Jack Butler Yeats is the highest estimated lot at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on September 30. The 1943 oil on board is estimated at 25,000-35,000. Gerard Dillon’s Resting Tinkers is estimated at 20,000-30,000 as are two works by Dan O’Neill, Barmaid and Frankie.  The catalogue, which is online, features 233 lots with estimates from 400.     THE LOCK BY CONSTABLE AT SOTHEBY’S IN DECEMBER

    John Constable’s The Lock will be offered at Sotheby’s in London on December 9 with an estimate of £8-12 million.  It has been in the same family collection for over 150 years and is on the market for the first time since 1855.  The Lock is one of the small group of monumental landscapes, known as the ‘Six Footers’, which for many define the pinnacle of the artist’s career. Depicting a bucolic scene on the River Stour in the artist’s native Suffolk, and painted in response to the huge critical acclaim that greeted Constable’s first treatment of the composition exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1824, the picture was treasured by the artist. He retained it in his studio till the end of his life. It was singled out by him for prestigious exhibitions, and chosen as the basis for the engraving that was to make it among the most familiar, and celebrated, images in the canon of British art.

    Works by Constable are extremely rare in private hands and on the market and this masterpiece will lead the Old Master and British paintings sale.  Of the other paintings forming the Six Footers – the Stour landscapes – all but two are in public institutions.

    Julian Gascoigne, Sotheby’s senior British pictures specialises said: “Constable’s absolute mastery as a landscape painter is everywhere in this picture”.

The sale will include fresh works from the studio of Desmond Carrick as well as early alloy pieces by Rowan Gillespie.  The catalogue is online.     ART ON SALE IN DUBLIN NEXT WEEK

    It is art sales weeks in Dublin next week.  Whyte’s will get the ball rolling on September 28 with a sale of Irish and International art at the RDS.  There is a wide variety of offer.  A rarity is Galway artist Joseph Patrick Haverty’s A Family Group from c1850 (30,000-50,000) with astonishing detail of consumes and the figures as a family disembark from their painted rowing boat.  Sir John Lavery’s  1931 portrait of The Earl of Lonsdale is estimated at 25,000-40,000.  He inaugurated The Lonsdale Belt for boxing in 1909 and his name was immortalized in 1959 when it was used for a range of boxing equipment and sporting.  Lavery described his as “the most paintable – not to say the best dressed – Englishman I knew”.  There is contemporary art too  from Sean Scully and John Shinnors to William Crozier and Rowan Gillespie.  Whyte’s will offer 216 lots and the catalogue is online.  Here is a small selection.

    AN EDWIN HAYES OIL LEADS ADAM’S SUNDAY INTERIORS AUCTION

    A classical Edwin Hayes oil painting – Shipping off the coast at Genoa – was the top lot at the James Adam Sunday Interiors auction in Dublin today.  It sold for a hammer price of 8,200.  A 19th century telescopic dining table made a hammer price of 7,700. An oval portrait of Mary Preston by Hugh Douglas Hamilton sold for 4,800, an early 19th century Irish side table made 6,800, twelve panel back dining chairs in the Georgian style made 6,000 and a Victorian walnut and marquetry credenza sold for 5,000.  Adams reported strong bidding and 68% of lots on offer found buyers.  The sale realized 218,000.

    THE CONSECRATION OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF ST. MARY’S, POPE’S QUAY, CORK, c.1842 by James Mahony RHA (c.1815-c.1859)  UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR 19,000 AT HAMMER. IT WAS BOUGHT BY THE GREAT HUNGER MUSEUM, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY, CONNECTICUT.

    AN historic Cork painting by James Mahony – The Consecration of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary’s, Pope’s Quay, Cork c1842 – comes up at Whyte’s Irish and International art auction in Dublin on September 28.  Estimated at 8,000-10,000 it has not been seen in public since it was shown at the RHA in 1842. It was presented to Kearns Deane, architect of St. Mary’s and brother of Sir Thomas Deane and has been passed down though the Deane family to the present owner. The historical significance of the work is that it shows an important public ceremony in a newly built catholic church shortly after Catholic emancipation.  It includes the figure of Daniel O’Connell in the congregation and is in its original frame.  The foundation stone of St. Mary’s was laid in 1832 and it opened in 1839. The interior depicted is now slightly different.  From 1868 to 1872 the rock behind the church was excavated and a larger apse constructed. The stained glass windows have been removed.

    In catalogue notes Dr. Julian Campbell recounts that James Mahony, born in Cork in either 1811 or 1817, is best known for his sparse and harrowing illustrations of the Great Famine for The Illustrated London News where he was an artist and a reporter for many years. He worked with oil and watercolour and his illustrations were admired by, among others, Vincent van Gogh.  In 1841 he helped to establish the Cork Art Union and exhibited paintings of Italian views, architectural subjects and scenes from Shakespeare. In 1846 one of his engravings was presented to Queen Victoria.
    The venue for Whyte’s art auction is the Minerva Suite of the RDS.  The sale includes work by Charles Jervas, Thomas Hickey, Aloysius O’Kelly, Sir William Orpen, Sir John Lavery, Percy French, Mainie Jellett,  Gerard Dillon, Norah McGuinness, John Shinnors, Rowan Gillespie and Edward Delaney.

    A YEATS AT WOKINGHAM AUCTION

    The Pound Street Band, a pencil, pen, ink and watercolour by Jack Butler Yeats comes up at Wokingham auctioneers Martin and Pole on September 23.  Estimated at £5,000-7,000, it was sold at Christie’s in 1998 for just under £10,000.  Executed around 1912 it was shown at the Theatre Exhibition, Birmingham in 1917.  It was purchased two years later from the gallery of Joseph Abernethy, Dunedin by a Colonel W. M. MacDonald.
    Hilary Pyle’s catalogue raisonne of Yeats records this as a compilation of drawings made by the artist referring to incidents and characters he saw on his return to the West from Devon every year. The picture, according to auctioneer Pascal McNamara at Martin & Pole, Wokingham, Berkshire has come from the estate of a retired Irish-born lady in the area.

    The auction will also feature a silver bread tongs by Cork silversmith Richard Garde with Dublin hallmarks for 1828. It is estimated at £200-300.

    A $60MILLION+ TWOMBLY AT SOTHEBY’S IN NEW YORK

    Untitled, 1968 [New York City] – a seminal example of Cy Twombly’s  ‘Blackboard’ paintings  comes up at Sotheby’s in New York on November 11.  It is expected to realise more than $60 million.  The work is from the collection of Los Angeles philanthropist Audrey Irmas and sale proceeds will benefit The Audrey Irmas Foundation for Social Justice. The foundation supports causes including Wilshire Boulevard Temple, which will receive $30 million from the sale. The funds will launch the campaign for the Temple’s new building, designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) led by Rem Koolhaas, and to be named The Audrey Irmas Pavilion. The building will be OMA’s first commission from a religious institution, and the firm’s first cultural building in California.

    “It is always a pleasure to welcome spectacular works of art back to Sotheby’s” said  Anthony Grant, Sotheby’s Vice Chairman, Americas. “We last offered the painting in 1990 as part of the Saatchi Collection. The brilliance of the artist’s gestural genius is on full display as the written form dissolves into a nuanced grey background.
