    A CARPET MADE FOR THE SUN KING AT SOTHEBY’S

    From opulent carpets made for the Sun King and Frederick the Great’s armchair to the intriguing Rothschild Orpheus Cup and gems of scientific innovation the sale entitled Treasures at Sotheby’s in London on July 6 offers much to the serious and wealthy collector.  Inaugurated in 2010 this highly curated sale is one of the more notable of the year in decorative art.  Combining royal and aristocratic provenance with craftsmanship and freshness to market the selection this summer includes furniture, silver, vertu, clocks, sculpture and works of art.

    Henry House, Head of Sotheby’s Furniture and Decorative Arts Department, said: “Each of the 46 lots in the sale exemplifies the definition of treasure. Formerly the preserve of Kings, Princes and Popes, they celebrate the genius and craftsmanship of the greatest artists and artisans of their era.”

    WOODWARDS OFFER A SMALL ATKINSON ON JUNE 18

    Woodwards will offer a small maritime painting by George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson (1806-1884) at their auction in Cork on June 18.  HMS Conqueror off Queenstown (Cobh) is estimated at 5,000-8,000. There is a pair of watercolours of the Lakes of Killarney by Douglas Alexander and other art on offer includes At Tallow Horse Fair by Arthur Maderson.  Antique furniture includes a Georgian bureau bookcase, a Regency rosewood card table, an inlaid revolving bookcase, a Georgian sofa table, a long case clock, a Georgian chest of drawers, a large gilt mirror, an inlaid twin pillar dining table and a Victorian davenport.  A pair of cast iron garden vases, a five piece garden set and a pair of cast iron seats are seasonal offerings.

    A GRAPHIC VERSION OF THE SCREAM BY MUNCH AT SOTHEBY’S

    Two momentous graphic works by Edvard Munch: The Scream and Self-Portrait will come up at Sotheby’s this month and in September.  They are both dated 1895 and from a private Norwegian collection. They were originally owned by Olaf Schou, the Norwegian industrialist, art collector and patron who was a friend and great supporter of Munch’s.  He acquired them directly from the artist. The Scream comes up at the evening sale of Impressionist & Modern Art in London on June 21 with an estimate of £800,000-1,200,000. Self-Portrait will be part of a Prints & Multiples sale in London on September 27.  It is estimated at £50,000-70,000.

    James Mackie, Head of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Department, London, said: “Munch’s The Scream has transcended art history to reach a global consciousness and his lithograph of 1895 helped initiate the process of its mass proliferation. This exceptional impression has an impact no less powerful than Munch’s 1893 tempera and crayon version.”

    IRISH ART AT BONHAMS THIS WEEK

    Single File by Jack B. Yeats is one of a number of works by Irish artists at Bonhams in London on June 15.  The sale of Modern British and Irish Art includes work by Yeats, Paul Henry, Dan O’Neill, William Scott and sculptor F.E. MacWilliam. The Yeats and two Henry’s are all estimated at £30,000-50,000, the O’Neill at £5,000-8,000 and the Scott’s at sums from £12,000 to £30,000.

    A BLACK LACQUERED CABINET DREW BIDDERS AT JAMES ADAM

    Among the top lots at the James Adam At Home auction in Dublin today were this black lacquered French cabinet in late 18th century style. It made 4,000 at hammer, double the top estimate. A Burmese river scene by James Raeburn Middleton (1855-1931) made 2,800 at hammer.  A pair of late George III upholstered armchairs made a hammer of 3,200 and a pair of  George III style bergere armchairs made 3,800. A parcel gilt four poster bed made 3,400, a set of Art Deco library steps sold for 1,800, an Italian 1970’s brass framed coffee table sold for 2,000 and a composed Art Deco walnut veneered dining suite made 1,800.

    A GROUNDBREAKING RECLINING FIGURE BY HENRY MOORE AT CHRISTIE’S

    Henry Moore’s ground-breaking 1951 modernist sculpture Reclining Figure: Festival will lead the sculpture section of Christie’s 250th  anniversary auction, Defining British Art, in London on June 30.  Commissioned for the Festival of Britain in 1951 it was a focal point on the newly built South Bank. This was Moore’s first large reclining figure to be cast in bronze. The artist said it was the first sculpture in which he succeeded in making form and space sculpturally inseparable. The work is now estimated at £15-20 million. It will be offered alongside further large-scale major British sculptures by Dame Barbara Hepworth, Sea Form (Atlantic), 1964 (£3-5 million) and Lynn Chadwick, Back to Venice, 1988 from the artist’s estate (£1.4-1.8 million).

    Cyanne Chutkow, Deputy Chairman, Impressionist & Modern Art, Christie’s said: “Reclining Figure: Festival is one of the great masterpieces of Moore’s oeuvre and is arguably his most masterful and elegant sculptural synthesis of form and space. Privately held in an American collection for almost a half century, this work is a testament to the owners’ discerning and sophisticated artistic sensibility.”

    MODIGLIANI MASTERPIECE AT SOTHEBY’S

    A masterpiece by Amedeo Modigliani – Jeanne Hébuterne (au foulard) –  is among the  highlights at  Sotheby’s London Impressionist & Modern Art evening  sale in London on June 21. In a private collection since 1986 it is now estimated to make more than £28 million.  This elegant and lyrical work is among the most beautiful portraits Amedeo Modigliani painted of his lover Jeanne Hébuterne – revealing a tender moment between a pioneer in the world of modern art and his most loyal muse.

    Jeanne met Modigliani in 1917, when she was a young art student, and for the next three years she was his constant companion and source of inspiration. The two were devoted to each other – with Modigliani even pledging to marry her, despite her family’s protestations. In January 1920, Modigliani died of tubercular meningitis. Following the funeral, a twenty-two year old, and reputedly heavily pregnant, Jeanne was taken to her parents’ home. There, inconsolable, she committed suicide by leaping from an upstairs window.

    Helena Newman, Global Co-Head of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Department, said: “The pioneering Modern style with which Amedeo Modigliani sensuously depicted the female form is inextricably bound with his lover and muse Jeanne Hébuterne. This painting is one of the most alluring portraits that Modigliani painted of her and the finest to come to the market in a decade.”

    A work by the Irish artist James Barry has turned up in the collection of Brian Sewell the renowned and controversial art critic, award-winning journalist and author.  Christie’s sale devoted to Brian Sewell: Critic & Collector will take place in London on September 27. Brian Sewell (1931-2015) worked at Christie’s as an auction house picture expert for almost nine years, between 1958 and 1967, having graduated in Art History at the Courtauld Institute. Acquired over many decades, approximately 200 lots will be offered for sale from the collection, including important Old Master Paintings and Drawings and 19th and 20th century British Art.  The works carry estimates ranging from under £1,000 to £600,000.

    Born in Cork James Barry (1741-1806) studied painting under  John Butts and early in his career was patronised by Edmund Burke.  Noted as one of the earliest Romantic painters working in Britain he studied in Paris and Rome and influenced artists like William Blake.   He is best remembered for his six part series of paintings on The Progress of Human Culture in the Great Room of the Royal Society of Arts, London.

    Orlando Rock, Christie’s UK Chairman: “Brian Sewell was, undoubtedly, one of Christie’s most colourful and learned former colleagues. What always motivated him was his love of great art and its power to move and inspire, combined with his characteristic and acerbic wit.”

    Noël Annesley, Honorary Chairman, Christie’s UK: “Brian was a young man of 27 when he joined Christie’s. As his assistant, I got to admire him and to like him enormously. He evolved from a rather shy, cerebral art historian turned auction house expert into one of the most famous and widely read British art critics of our time. Brian was a man whose opinions were sought not just on art but on a wide variety of topics, reflecting the exceptional range of his interests. He could be relied upon to provide witty and often devastating judgements. A wonderful instructor, serious but humorous too, he set a standard for us all.”
