    WATER COLOUR SOCIETY OF IRELAND AT DUN LAOGHAIRE

    The Water Colour Society of Ireland’s 162nd exhibition opens on Monday 26 September at the Concourse Gallery, Dun Laoghaire County Hall and runs for one week.  Over 300 paintings in watercolour, gouache and pastels, drawings and limited edition signed prints, will be on sale in a wide ranging and diverse exhibition.  Well-known artists showing include Jayne Barry, Brid Clarke, Patrick Cahill, Ivor Coburn RUA, John Coyle RHA, Chris Dearden RUA, Pauline Doyle ANCA, Joe Dunne RHA, Edward Freeney, Olivia Hayes, Les Jones ARUA, John Keating, Margaret Kent, Vincent Lambe, Grania Langrishe, Anthony Loughran, Brett McEntagart RHA, Oisin Roche, Tom Roche, Tom Ryan PPRHA, Susan Sex, and Neil Shawcross RHA RUA.  The president of the Australian Watercolour Institute David Van Nunen will show two works as an invited guest artist.   Here is a small selection from the show:

    A striking oil by Jack B. Yeats entitled Singing Under the Canopy of Heaven is among the many highlights at Whyte’s sale of Irish and international art sale at the RDS in Dublin on September 26. The work, which dates from 1950, is estimated at 90,000-120,000. It is one of a number of late Yeats paintings which focusses on strolling players and performers in the Irish countryside.   There are from the McClelland Collection in this auction but the Yeats is not one of them. The catalogue lists 180 lots. Here is a small selection.

    GRAPHICS BY MUNCH AT SOTHEBY’S PRINTS SALE

    Graphic works by Edvard Munch Two Human Beings. The Lonely Ones and Self-Portrait, both acquired directly from the artist, come up at Sotheby’s sale of Prints and Multiples in London on September 27.  Self-Portrait is from a private Norwegian collection and was originally owned by Olaf Schou, the Norwegian industrialist and art patron; Two Human Beings. The Lonely Ones was purchased directly from Munch in 1942 by Harald Holst Halvorsen. They are never been at auction before and are estimated respectively at £50,000-70,000 and £400,000-600,000.

    Lucy Rosenburgh, Sotheby’s Prints Specialist, said: “Schou and Halvorsen were two of Munch’s most important patrons, with whom he enjoyed an equally strong friendship. The notable provenance of these prints makes their appearance on the market all the more appealing to collectors.”

    FRIEZE WEEK SALES ANTICIPATE AUTUMN EXHIBITIONS

    Christie’s Frieze Week auction of Post-War and Contemporary Art in London on October 6 will bring together over 200 of the foremost names in the contemporary art world today. The sale focuses on artists who are the subjects of the most anticipated exhibitions this autumn, including Glenn Brown, David Hockney, Per Kirkeby, Gerald Laing, Thomas Schütte, Henry Taylor, Günther Uecker and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.  The sale will be followed on the the same evening by the Italian Sale.  Together with the Leslie Waddington Collection on October 4 and the Post War and Contemporary Day Auction on October 7 it adds up to what Christie’s say is one of the most important weeks in the contemporary art-world calendar.

    KANDINSKY HIGHLIGHT AT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK SALE

    Wassily Kandinsky’s Rigide et courbé will be a highlight of  the Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale at Christie’s in New York on November 16. Estimated at $18-25 million Rigide et courbé (Rigid and Curved) is one Kandinsky’s dynamic compositions of grand scale. The canvas is densely packed with lively geometric vignettes and a thoughtfully textured surface composed of sand mixed with paint, a technique Kandinsky used only in his Paris paintings of 1934-1935. Solomon R. Guggenheim acquired it from Kandinsky in 1936. It was extensively published and highly exhibited from 1937-1949. The work is being offered from an important private American collection and has not been on the market since 1964.

    Conor Jordan, Deputy Chairman of Impressionist and Modern Art said: “With its dynamic sweep of upward energy, Kandinsky’s Rigide et courbé, a late masterpiece from the mid-1930s, unseen in public for over fifty years, evokes an epic paean, a rhapsodic song of thanksgiving suggesting the bright hope the artist saw in his new home in Paris following his flight from Nazi Germany. Abstract forms, runic symbols and mythic references, summoning Kandinsky’s life and career, intertwine with veiled allusions to contemporary events, across the broad dimensions of this technically audacious canvas which is richly worked in oil and sand. It ranks among the greatest Kandinskys still in private hands.”

    RARE CHINESE TEAPOT SELLS FOR $3,490,000

    A rare Turquoise-Ground Famille-Rose ‘Hui Mountain Retreat’ Teapot and Cover sold for $3,490,000 over a top estimate of $500,000 at Sotheby’s Chinese art sales in New York.  The  Qianlong Seal Mark and Period teapot was chased by multiple clients in the room and on the telephone. Bidding began at $250,000 before quickly jumping to $1 million. This wonderful work of art, one of only two known, is an ode to Emperor Qianlong’s adoration of tea; the front features a figure, possibly the Qianlong Emperor, being served tea while admiring an open handscroll. The reverse is an imperial poem, entitled Jihuiquan peng zhulu ge (Brewing Tea by Hui Swing), written by the Emperor himself following a visit to the Hui Spring during his Southern Inspection Tour.

    Angela McAteer, Head of Sotheby’s Chinese Works of Art Department, New York noted: “The contest amongst more than ten bidders that pushed a 250 year-old teapot to $3.5 million reminded us of auction’s unique magic. The piece, having been enjoyed by an American collector for decades, was just one of a number of works that soared over pre-sale expectations after drawing bidding from determined collectors. As we saw throughout our two days of sales, the Chinese Art market remains robust, with major collectors deeply engaged in owning the finest examples of the country’s artist heritage.”

    Over the course of two days, Sotheby’s New York sales of Chinese Art brought a total of $14,748,350 – well over the $7.4/10.8 million estimate.

    IRISH LIBRARY BOOKCASE SELLS FOR 6,300 IN BANDON

    AN Irish three door mahogany library bookcase was the top lot at Hegarty’s sale in Bandon, Co. Cork this week.  Complete with arched astragal glazed doors and in tip top condition it sold for 6,300. Bog Flowers by Patrick Scott sold for 2,300 and Turf Landscape by the same artist sold for 2,150. A walnut bow fronted chest on chest made 1,300 as did a coromandel wood folder card table. A mahogany bookcase with glazed three door up shelf units made 1,000.

    GERARD DILLON’S MENDING NETS, ARAN THE TOP LOT AT SOTHEBY’S

    The top lot at Sotheby’s Irish sale in London was Mending Nets, Aran by Gerard Dillon. It sold to an American buyer for £191,000 over a top estimate of  £150 ,000. The work sold at James Adam in Dublin for 80,000 euro six years ago.  A total of 65% of lots on offer found buyers.  The Cello Player by Sir John Lavery made £112,500 but Mary Borden and her family by the same artist, estimated at £150,000-250,000 failed to find a buyer.

    Charlie Minter of Sotheby’s said this years sale made £1.8 million.  This was ahead of the low estimate and built on the success of Sotheby’s Irish sale last year.  Auction records were set for Patrick Scott, Gottfried Helnwein, Rita Duffy and for a work on paper by Sean Keating.  Water Lillies by Yeats was unsold at auction, but changed hands privately immediately after the sale.

    KIRCHNER PRINTS AND SOTHEBY’S

    An important group of prints by German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner will come up at Sotheby’s sale of Prints and Multiples in London on September 27. The six works, which have a combined total estimate of £406,000-598,000, come to sale from a distinguished European collection.  Covering the Dresden period of Die Brücke, Kirchner’s subsequent stay in Berlin, and the years he spent living in Davos in the Swiss Alps, the collection brings together woodcuts, lithographs and an etching from key stages in the artist’s career.

    Lucy Rosenburgh, Sotheby’s Prints specialist, said: “Kirchner pushed printmaking to its limits and this stunning group is a superb showcase for his range and virtuosity.”
