    YEATS FAMILY COLLECTION SELLS WELL AT FONSIE MEALY

    John Butler Yeats – A fine pen-and- ink Portrait of his son W.B. from 1886 (4,000-6,000)

    The Yeats family collection provided the top lots at Fonsie Mealy’s sale in Castlecomer today.  The most expensive lot sold was the original Mosada portrait of WB Yeats by his father which made a hammer price of 21,000.  It had been estimated at 4,000-6,000.

    A small pocket sketch book belonging to William Butler Yeats sold for 17,000 over a top estimate of 5,000. A self portrait by John Butler Yeats made 13,000, the Yeats family harp made 11,000, William Butler Yeats’s spectacles made 10,000 and the Yeats family bookcase sold for 9,500 at hammer.

    The sale realised  550,000 on the hammer and 85% of lots on offer found buyers.

    LEGER AND VAN GOGH STEAL THE SHOW AT CHRISTIE’S

    Laboureur dan un champ by Vincent van Gogh was the top lot at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern evening sale in New York last night. It sold for $81.3 million in a sale that brought in $479.3 million.  Altogether 68 lots were offered and 60 were sold. This was the second highest total for a various owner  sale of Impressionist and Modern art at Christie’s. Fernand Leger’s Contraste de Formes sold for $70 million.

    YEATS FAMILY COLLECTION AT FONSIE MEALY

    A collection of remarkable personal artefacts from the Yeats family will come up at Fonsie Mealy’s auction in Castlecomer on November 14.  The Yeats Family Collection – The Final Chapter,  includes paintings, letters and personal memorabilia.  Many of them have not been seen before.  The auctioneers say that this will be the last significant tranche of Yeats items to ever go to auction and that they offer a unique insight into Irish literary and artistic history through the eyes of the family.  This is a fine art sale of around 800 lots in total. It will feature Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture; silver, clocks, militaria, carpets, light fixtures, musical instruments; stained glass and paintings including a selection of modern Irish Art.     KERLIN EXHIBITION ON LEGACY OF STEPHEN MCKENNA

    THE life and legacy of artist Stephen McKenna, who died in May, is celebrated in an exhibition at the Kerlin Gallery in Dublin.   London born he studied at The Slade in the 1960’s and settled in Carlow in the 1990’s.  He was one of the first artists exhibited at Kerlin on its founding in 1988 and he continued to show there for almost 30 years.

    This celebratory show brings together a selection of paintings produced within the last decade of his life and includes landscapes, still life, domestic interiors and street scenes. His work is represented in the collections of IMMA, the Tate, London, Berlinische Galeries, the Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels and in many private and public collections. The exhibition will close with a celebratory event as part of the Dublin Gallery weekend on Sunday, November 25.

    A DRESDEN MONKEY ORCHESTRA AT MEALY’S

    The Kings of the Swingers, a 12 piece Dresden monkey orchestra, will come up at Mealy’s two day sale in Castlecomer next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Lot 494, which will come up towards the end of day one, is an attractive set of monkeys, each playing a different instrument and including a conductor and vocalist.  Just the thing to jazz up your home. The orchestra is estimated at 1,300-1,500.
    The sale will include art, antiques and interiors from a number of period homes.  There is a selection of lots relating to, and once the property of, Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator.  Among these is a fine plaster bust of O’Connell after the eminent Cork sculptor John Hogan (2,000-3,000), a large portrait of him attributed to Joseph Crowley (1819-1857) (2,000-3,000), a large and heavily chased silver crested salver (5,000-7,000) and a large English porcelain jug together with a letter to Ms. McCarthy of 62 Dawson St., Dublin in which O”Connell refers to the purchase of the jug and another letter which refers to the jug which was presented to him while in prison. It is estimated at 2,000-3,000.

    Nearly 1,000 lots will come under the hammer and the sale will be live on the internet.  There is a George III style architectural fire surround and overmantle (2,400-2,600), some heavy cast iron garden benches and statuary, an Irish Georgian style reeded brass bound peat bucket,  a Regency chaise longue, a long 19th century Irish pine kitchen table,  a Cork silver soup ladle by Carden Terry and Jane Williams, a large Edwardian silver epergne, some jewellery and pistols a a c1920’s-30’s mechanical toy bank by Saalheimer and Strauss of Germany (1,500-2,000).  The catalogue is online.     ARTIST SAMUEL WALSH WINS SAVILLS ART PRIZE

    Samuel Walsh the winner of the Savills Art Prize 2017

    The Clare based artist Samuel Walsh has won the  5,000 euro Savills Art Prize.  The winner was announced at Vue 2017, Ireland’s national contemporary art fair at the Royal Hibernian Academy, which runs until Sunday evening.

    London born Walsh, whose parents hail from Limerick and Ennis, lived in Limerick for 22 years and is now based in Cloonlara, Co. Clare. “Art is a lifetime vocation, not a weekend job, and this prize is a confirmation that if you keep your focus and, hopefully, keep producing good work, then it will pay off,” the artist said.

    Samuel Walsh was born in London. His parents are from Limerick and Ennis. He lived in Limerick for 22 years and is now based in Cloonlara, Co. Clare. He is the founder of the National Collection of Contemporary Drawing which hangs in the Limerick City Gallery of Art.  The Aosdana member is closely associated with the beginnings of the Limerick Exhibition of Visual Art and has taught at many institutions including NCAD, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in France.

    Walsh’s work has been acquired by national collections in Hungary, England, Croatia, Italy, and Switzerland and he will exhibit ‘Segment and Apple Drawings’ at the Hunt Museum, Limerick in February-March 2018.

    BANKSY WORKS ON SHOW IN DUBLIN

    Banksy – Girl with Balloon

    Works by Banksy, the world famous anonymous British street artist, are set to wow the crowd at Art Source, the Irish art fair which runs at the RDS from November 10-12.  Gormleys Fine Art will show a selection of screen prints including  Banksy’s iconic Flying Copper image of a policeman, Girl With A Balloon and his Tesco Tomato Soup can parody on the work by Andy Warhol.  “We get Banksy‘s work through an external company and each piece comes with a certificate of proof that it is an original piece by the artist,” Oliver Gormley explained.  “There is massive interest in Banksy, his work is very eye catching and people tend to do a double take when they see you have an original by him on display,” he added.  Prices for the pieces on display range from 9,000 for Napalm up to 150,000 for Heavy Weaponry.

    More than 130 contemporary artists and 20 Irish and international galleries will gather together to showcase painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, prints and ceramic art at Art Source.  More than 15,000 people are expected to attend.

    A LAVERY GOLF PAINTING AT SOTHEBY’S SCOTTISH SALE

    A 1922 view of the golf course at North Berwick by Sir John Lavery is one of a number of highlights at Sotheby’s Scottish art sale in London on November 21. Lavery painted a series of canvases depicting the famous golf links at North Berwick between 1919 and 1921.  Winston Churchill remarked of them: “He shows us sunlight in all its variety – buoyant and bracing, with a touch of grimness on a Scottish golf links…”   This one is estimated at £150,000-250,000.
    Thomas Podd, Sotheby’s head of Scottish art said:  “This is one of our strongest offerings of Scottish art in years. We’re thrilled to be able to present one of the most significant and diverse groups of works available on the market by Joan Eardley, whose recent retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art was a clear indication of how highly revered this visionary artist has become. The Scottish Colourists are headlined by truly great examples by all four proponents, including one of the best still lifes ever painted by George Leslie Hunter.  An exciting post-war section includes an absolute masterpiece by Anne Redpath, a top notch example of one of Robin Philipson’s paintings of red poppies, and a fantastic group of works by John Bellany from the 1970s. Last, but not least, one of John Lavery’s coveted golf course scenes make a welcome appearance, following the success of a painting from the same series in our sale last year”.
