A presentation pair of Armada pattern silver claret jugs are included in a collection of Irish silver at Dreweatts online auction in Newbury, Berkshire on July 7. Made by John Smyth and Sons of Grafton St. they were presented to Dublin Lord Mayor George Moyers in 1881. The estimate is £3,000-£5,000. Other Irish pieces in the sale include a George III silver salver, a George II cream jug, a mid 18th century silver bowl and a twin handled silver cup by Robert Calderwood.
These back to back library tables are among the highlights at Sotheby’s Treasures sale in London on July 6. Attributed to William Kent they formed part of the original furnishings of Tottenham Park, Wiltshire, a house designed by Richard Boyle (1694-1753), 3rd Earl of Burlington and 4th Earl of Cork, for his sister Juliana. Known as the Architect Earl he is remembered for bringing Palladian architecture to England and Ireland. Tottenham was one of his first professional projects and among the earliest manifestations of the neo-Palladian aesthetic he championed with his protege William Kent. Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, now home to the Royal Academy, is one of his designs. The George II tables are estimated at £400,000-£600,000. UPDATE: THESE WERE UNSOLD
A timed online only auction of art at James Adam, Dublin runs until July 8. The lots on offer will be on physical view at Adams on July 6 and 7. Meantime the catalogue is online. Estimates are highly affordable and most lots are on offer at under 1,000.
This newly discovered painting by Sir John Lavery sold for £156,500 at Bonhams Modern British and Irish art sale in London yesterday. It has been in a private collection in Australia for many years. Bonhams suggest that the woman in the centre of the portrait is Hazel Lavery.
PICASSO’S L’ÉTREINTE was the top lot at Christie’s 20th/21st Century London to Paris evening sale. It made £14.6 million in an auction which realised £153,592,611 and marked the best summer season since 2017. The livestreamed sale attracted bidders from 32 countries and five continents. Christie’s say it demonstrated the depth of the European market. The second highest price paid was for Alberto Giacometti’s Homme qui Chavire which sold for £13.7 million. The auction was sold 90% by lot and 96% by value.

MORE than 300 lots will come under the hammer at Hegarty’s live online auction in Bandon on July 4. Among them are a pair of late 19th century silver tazzas made in Dublin c1892 with the maker mark MH. They are estimated at 700-1,400. The sale features antique furniture, jewellery and collectibles.
