BECKETT AND JOYCE – AN EARLY CRITIQUE

    Friday, August 19th, 2016

beckettA first edition of an early critique by Samuel Beckett with and about James Joyce is available with London rare booksellers Peter Harrington. Published by Shakespeare and Company in 1929 “Our Exagmination Round his Factification for Incamination of Work in Progress” comes with letters of protest by G. V. L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon. This is copy 45 of 96 large numbered copies printed on Verge d’Arches. This early critique of Joyce’s final work was published some 10 years prior to the publication of Finnegan’s Wake.  Part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. A myth surrounding this work is that one or both of the two letters of protest were written by Joyce himself. However both authors existed – indeed Beach herself commissioned Slingsby. Dixon’s effort was an unsolicited one by a Russian émigré who was to die in Paris in 1929, just as the book was published.

The critique is priced at £4,750 and is one of a number of plays, novels, essays and inscribed items spanning Beckett’s career now available at Peter Harrington on Dover St. in London.

WORK BY BELFAST ARTIST AT FIJI EXHIBITION AT SAINSBURY CENTRE

    Sunday, August 14th, 2016
Work by the Belfast born landscape and marine painter James Glen Wilson (1827-1863) will feature in a large exhibition on Fiji at the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia in Norwich from October 15 to February 12, 2017.  Commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1852 to take part in the survey voyage of HMS Herald in the western Pacific Wilson recorded coastal views and the activities of the survey.

Fiji has a long history of activity and cultural exchanges with canoes transporting goods and peoples to Tonga, Samoa and neighbouring Pacific islands since 1,000 BC.  The Europeans arrived in the 19th century, a Colonial government was established in 1874 and Fiji became independent in 1970. Many traditions have been maintained and even with a population of less than one million Fiji is a major rugby nation. The exhibition will highlight sculpture, textiles, ceramics, ivory and shell regalia, European paintings and historic photographs. Works in the exhibition by James Glen Wilson, who finally settled in Australia, show Fijian war canoes in action an a siege by Christian Fijians of a fortified village.

ECLECTIC IMAGES AT IRELAND’S NATIONAL GALLERY

    Saturday, August 13th, 2016

An exhibition of recent print and drawing acquisitions opens today at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. Entitled Eclectic Images the first part of the exhibition shows a selection of some 60 prints and illustrated books from the Brian Lalor Collection, which charts the developments in printmaking through the centuries, from the early reproductive prints of Maerten van Heemskerk (1498-1574), to Christopher Le Brun’s (b.1951) mysterious Four Riders series of etchings. It explores themes such as the portrait in print; early twentieth-century printmaking; Biblical Palestine; and works inspired by Whistler.

The second part of the display includes some of the most beautiful and unusual watercolours, drawings and prints acquired by the Gallery through purchase or gift since 2011. It features drawings by Fernand Lèger, Walter Osborne and Kyffin Williams, as well as prints by Berthe Morisot, Frank Brangwyn and Micheal Farrell. The generous donation of over 160 prints received from Brian Lalor in 2014 underlines how the national collection continues to benefit from the generosity of private donors. Eclectic Images runs until December 7.  Here is a sample:
