Claude Monet’s Le Parlement, soleil couchant, a magisterial depiction of London’s Houses of Parliament as viewed from across the River Thames, is an important highlight at Christie’s Looking Forward to the Past evening auction in New York on May 11.  Monet’s views of the Thames established a new departure in his work, preparing the ground for his last, mythic feat: the Nymphéas (Water Lilies) series. Depicting a beautiful sunset over the Houses of Parliament, Le Parlement, soleil couchant belongs to a group of nineteen views that Monet started working on in 1900 and 1901. All were painted during the late hours of the afternoon and in early evenings. This example, estimated at $35-45 million, is one of only five remaining in private hands.

Jussi Pylkkanen, Christie’s Global President, remarked: “This wonderfully expressive Monet is simply one of the greatest depictions of the Houses of Parliament by the greatest artist of the 19th Century. Moreover, this picture heralds a new age in painting as artists were inspired by Monet to liberate colour and create wonderful abstractions by interpreting real subjects. One could argue that these pictures heralded the end of academic painting as artists were inspired to follow the path of abstraction from 1902 onwards. Monet was the father of modernism”.

IMPORTANT SIDE TABLE AT ADAM’S COUNTRY HOUSE SALE IN KILDARE

    Wednesday, April 8th, 2015

An impressive carved gilt wood side table in the manner of Matthias Locke is one of a number of furniture highlights at the upcoming James Adam on the premises house contents auction at Courtown House, Kilcock, Co. Kildare on April 22. This is a genuine country house auction with no lots added in. The side table was acquired in 1977 at the Carton House auction and the catalogue  reproduces two photographs of the salon at Carton with the table in situ. It is estimated at 20,000 plus.

Also certain to create great interest is a pair of Irish Regency neo-classical gilt wood torcheres in the style of Robert Adam attributed to del Vecchio of Dublin.  These two are estimated at 20,000 plus.

Courtown was owned by families of Norman descent like the Wogans, the Husseys and the Aylmers. The film director John Houston and his family rented the estate for a number of years in the 1950’s to hunt with the Kildares and other packs of hounds.  The auction will include  a number of important lots from the 1963 Courtown House auction catalogue.  The catalogue is online.

Gustave Courbet – La Bohemienne et ses enfants © Christie’s Images Limited 2015   UPDATE: THIS WAS UNSOLD

A Gustave Courbet rediscovery La Bohemienne et ses infants will highlight Christie’s New York spring sale of 19th century European art on April 28.   Pressure of work in 1853-54 forced Courbet to halt work on the painting and it was housed by a neighbour in Ornans  under the floorboard of the attic.

It remained there, forgotten, until 2001.  It was taken then to the Courbet museum in Ornans where its authenticity was confirmed. It is estimated at $1.8-2.5 million.

This curated auction boasts a selection of paintings by Federico Zandomengeghi, Gustave Courbet, and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, among others as well as a strong collection of Barbizon, French Academic, Victorian, Orientalist and Maritime pieces. The sale is primarily sourced from private collections, with additions from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Seattle Art Museum.

There is a group of seven paintings from the Art Gallery of Ontario deaccessioned to benefit further art purchases.

AROUND THE WORLD AT CHRISTIE’S, SOUTH KENSINGTON

    Tuesday, April 7th, 2015

A new themed auction Around the World showcasing fascinating items from all corners of the globe and the spirit of travel takes place at Christie’s, South Kensington on April 28.  With everything from a 34 star Civil War flag from North America to a world map from 1838 showing central Africa as unchartered territory the sale is brimful of interest. The map depicts central Africa as unchartered territory, just at the dawn of European exploration. Antarctica also remained somewhat undiscovered and it shows the extent of the discoveries in the South Seas by Cook, Palmer, Bransfield and Enderby, just prior to Sir James Ross’s expedition in 1839 to charter the Antarctic coastline. This  led to the discovery of the Ross Sea. Estimates range from £500 to £30,000.  Here is a small selection.

THE ART OF THE LORD OF THE DANCE

    Monday, April 6th, 2015

The art of the Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley features large at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction at the RDS on April 20. The two most expensively estimated lots on the catalogue are by the Riverdance artist. The Power, from the Castlehyde Private Collection, is estimated at 70,000-90,000, Flight of the Quetzal at  40,000-50,000. Global celebrity is a powerful tool and outsider art is popular.  Nevertheless estimates like that are light years ahead of the work of many long established Irish artists, living and dead, in the O’Driscoll catalogue.

An emerging artist, Michael Flatley creates his art by dancing on the canvas. In advance of his first exhibition, entitled “Art of the Dance” and due to be held in London this summer, he has sold privately from Castlehyde. One of his works made 22,500 at Sheppards in Durrow late last year.

LORD UXBRIDGE (1ST MARQUESS OF ANGELESEY): A GEORGE IV 18 CARAT GOLD IRISH FREEDOM BOX by Edward Murray, Dublin 1827 Sold for £100,900

LORD UXBRIDGE (1ST MARQUESS OF ANGELESEY): A GEORGE IV 18 CARAT GOLD IRISH FREEDOM BOX
    by Edward Murray, Dublin 1827
    Sold for £100,900

An 18 carat gold Irish presentation box dating to 1827 sold for £100,900 at Bonham’s April Waterloo sale. The Lord Uxbridge (Ist Marquess of Anglesea) presentation gold box was made in 1827 by Edward Murray, Dublin.  The cover of the finely embossed and chased box is set with coat or arms on a matted ground within a frame of rocaille shells and foliage. There are convex plain sides and the base is set with another coat of arms on a plain ground with similar border.

The arms on the cover are those of Field Marshal Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854) who served twice as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.  He was styled Lord Paget between 1784 and 1812 and known as The Earl of Uxbridge between 1812 and 1815. During his first appointment in Ireland he received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin.  The arms on the base are those of Trinity College.

He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d’Erlon’s column at the Battle of Waterloo. At the end of the battle he lost part of one of his legs to a cannonball, leading to a famous brief exchange of words: he was close to Wellington when his leg was hit, and exclaimed, “By God, sir, I’ve lost my leg!” ? to which Wellington replied, “By God, sir, so you have!”  The auction was built around Wellington, Waterloo and the Napoleonic Wars.
