    CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTION FOR PALLAS PROJECTS/STUDIOS

    Alice Maher, Sean Scully, Brian Maguire, Isabel Nolan and Paddy Graham are among the artists featured in the 20th anniversary auction in aid of Pallas Projects/Studios. The sale will be held on September 15 at 7 p.m. in the Irish Georgian Society’s City Assembly House, South William St. in Dublin. Located at The Coombe Pallas Projects/Studios (founded 1996) is a not-for-profit artist-run organisation dedicated to the facilitation of artistic production and discourse, via the provision of affordable artists studios in Dublin’s city centre, and curated projects.  Auctioneers Whyte’s say the event promises to be a gala affair. Guide prices range from 40 to 5,000.

    With the backdrop of an unwillingness of developers to allow for the provision of a long-term cultural aspect to the regeneration of city-centre areas throughout the boom years, PP/S has been searching, inhabiting, and fighting to maintain as many as eight semi-permanent locations since 1996, and many more temporary offsite exhibition/project scenarios. These have included a four-year exhibition programme in a semi-derelict block of council flats, a white cube space in a former milking parlour, and collaborative projects with and in Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Dublin Docklands; Fire Station Artists’ Studios; The Red Stables; The Model, Sligo; Catalyst Arts, Belfast; 126, Galway; The Black Mariah, Cork; Project 304, Bangkok; Sub-Urban Video Lounge, Rotterdam; Auto Italia South East, London and Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne.

    ART FROM MCCLELLAND COLLECTION AT WHYTE’S SEPTEMBER SALE

    An array of art from the estate of George and Maura McClelland will feature at Whyte’s autumn auction of Irish & International Art at the RDS in Dublin on September 26.    Lots 1-78 in the sale are from the collection, which included some of the finest examples from the oeuvres of Gerard Dillon, Tony O’Malley, Louis le Brocquy, F.E. McWilliam, Colin Middleton, William Conor, Frank McKelvey, William Leech and many others.  The balance of the sale [a further 102 lots] includes several other major works by Ireland’s best-known artists including Jack B Yeats, Paul Henry, Walter Osborne, Dan O’Neill and Harry Kernoff.

    A total of 170 works donated from the McClelland’s now forms part of IMMA’s permanent collection.

    A BATON TO COMMEMORATE PARNELL AT WHYTE’S

    A baton carried by the Chief Marshal of the Parnell Anniversary Demonstration in Dublin on October 7, 1890 is included in Whyte’s Eclectic Collector auction on September 17.  The bog-oak baton surmounted by a silver plated bust of Charles Stewart Parnell and decorated with carvings of ivy, commemorates “the uncrowned King of Ireland”.

    Ivy as a symbol of allegiance to Parnell takes its cue from a wreath of ivy sent by a Cork woman to Parnell’s funeral as the best offering she could afford.  There is an engraved white metal collar noting that it was presented to Mr. M.J. Murray, Chief Marshall of the demonstration.  The baton is estimated at 1,000-1,500.

    The auction will include sporting memorabilia, stamps, banknotes, advertising signs, travel posters, books, photographs and ephemera and the catalogue is online at Whyte’s.

    THE McCLELLAND’S PRIVATE COLLECTION AT WHYTE’S

    The private collection of the late George and Maura McClelland is to be sold through a series of auctions at Whyte’s in Dublin in 2016-17. George McClelland was an art dealer of renown in Ireland and Britain for over fifty years. He sold most of his stock to a private collector in 2006, who in turn donated a large part to the Irish Museum of Modern Art. George and his wife Maura retained about 200 works which they especially treasured. These are now offered at Whyte’s. Here is a small selection:

    IRISH ART FOR NEW AND ESTABLISHED COLLECTORS AT WHYTE’S

    There should be much to interest both new and established collectors at Whyte’s summer art auction on July 25.  Whyte’s say it offers art lovers a fantastic opportunity to acquire quality artwork from Ireland’s best known artists at a more modest price point. This is an online only sale of 150 lots with estimates from 100 to 3,000. The list of artists whose work is included reads higher than this.  There is work by Jack B Yeats, Sir John Lavery, Paul Henry, Mainie Jellett, Harry Kernoff, Estella Solomons, Mary Swanzy, Colin Middleton, Tony O’Malley, Sean McSweeney, Brian Bourke and Maurice Wilks.

    Among the other artists whose work will feature are Alice Maher, Richard Gorman, John Kindness, Michael Mulcahy, Markey Robinson, Eileen Meagher, Graham Knuttel, Martin Mooney, Neil Shawcross, Frank Egginton, Carey Clarke, Robert Taylor Carson and Patrick Leonard.    The catalogue is online.     PAUL HENRY’S CONNEMARA LANDSCAPE TOPS WHYTE’S AUCTION

    Paul Henry, Connemara Landscape sold for 100,000 at hammer.

    Paul Henry’s Connemara Landscape was the top lot at Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin last night. It sold for 100,000 at hammer. A second Henry, West of Ireland Road through the Bog, made 82,000.  Both works were sold to a collector in Co. Clare.

    Sean Keating’s 1924 work Salud made 52,ooo.  Gerard Dillon’s  West of Ireland Couple and Horses sold for 36,000 and another Dillon, The Fish Eaters made 24,000, Miscellaneous Objects by Harry Kernoff sold for 28,000, Pond Reverie by Tony O’Malley made 22,000, a triptych by Barrie Cooke made 18,000 and Trapeze I by John Shinnors sold for 16,000 at hammer.

    The top Yeat’s in in the auction, A Professional Man from 1905, failed to find a buyer and a Basil Blackshaw with an estimate of 10,000-15,000 was also passed.  The sale total was 850,000,  80% of lots found buyers and a good number of sold works soared above the high estimate.  Whyte’s next sale is on July 25.

    The 138th annual exhibition of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club – Ireland’s  largest group show – continues at the Concourse Gallery, County Hall, Dun Laoighaire until May 21.  Experts from auctioneers Whyte’s will be in attendance on May 20 between 1pm and 4pm to offer valuations of private collections of paintings.

    The 2016 exhibition features amongst the broad range of nearly 300 fine works by more than 80 member artists, a number of paintings specially created as a visual tribute to and inspired by the poems and literary works by Irish authors of the past 100 years. As is the Club’s custom, each themed picture carries a written caption, explaining the painter’s response to the original work.

    ECLECTIC COLLECTOR AUCTION TOTALS 240,000+

    A ten pounds 1939 banknote was the top lot at Whyte’s Eclectic Collector sale in Dublin.  It made 10,500 in a sale which totaled more than 240,000.  No less than 30% of lots went to online bidders.  The Elvis Presley ancestor’s document of a court case in Co. Carlow went to a collector in Wicklow. It sold for 2,300.  The underbidder was an institution in Co. Carlow. A 2d perforated stamp sold for 10,000 and a Central Bank of Ireland Lady Lavery banknote from 1944 with the war code sold for 9,500.

    A collection of 12 Co. Cork GAA medals going back to 1889 sold for 5,400.  A rare trial piece 20 pence coin from 1985 sold for 4,800 to a collector in Texas. A British Empire George IV stamp collection in seven volumes sold for 4,000 to a collector in Gloucestershire.  Whyte’s are already planning another collectors sale for next September 17.
