ONLINE SOTHEBY’S STYLE HAS FOTA LINKS

    Monday, April 20th, 2020

A set of four 1826 silver entree dishes and covers coming up at Sotheby’s Style sale online in New York on April 22 are engraved with the Smith-Barry arms of Fota, Co. Cork. The George IV dishes and covers on Sheffield plated warming stands are by John Bridge, London. The bases are by the Matthew Boulton Plate Company. Fota is a regency mansion expanded by architect Sir Richard Morrison (1767-1849) and his son Vetruvius Morrison (1794-1838), now restored and taken over by the Irish Heritage Trust. Sotheby’s catalogue notes that the estate contains famous gardens, a wildlife park, and the Fota Island Resort and Golf Club. The dishes are from the estate of Andrew Hartnagle, a designer of gardens at Doylestown, PA and are estimated at $25,000-35,000.

    UPDATE: THESE WERE UNSOLD

The covers are engraved twice with contemporary arms and heraldic castle finials
