    ARTIST SAMUEL WALSH WINS SAVILLS ART PRIZE

    Samuel Walsh the winner of the Savills Art Prize 2017

    The Clare based artist Samuel Walsh has won the  5,000 euro Savills Art Prize.  The winner was announced at Vue 2017, Ireland’s national contemporary art fair at the Royal Hibernian Academy, which runs until Sunday evening.

    London born Walsh, whose parents hail from Limerick and Ennis, lived in Limerick for 22 years and is now based in Cloonlara, Co. Clare. “Art is a lifetime vocation, not a weekend job, and this prize is a confirmation that if you keep your focus and, hopefully, keep producing good work, then it will pay off,” the artist said.

    Samuel Walsh was born in London. His parents are from Limerick and Ennis. He lived in Limerick for 22 years and is now based in Cloonlara, Co. Clare. He is the founder of the National Collection of Contemporary Drawing which hangs in the Limerick City Gallery of Art.  The Aosdana member is closely associated with the beginnings of the Limerick Exhibition of Visual Art and has taught at many institutions including NCAD, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in France.

    Walsh’s work has been acquired by national collections in Hungary, England, Croatia, Italy, and Switzerland and he will exhibit ‘Segment and Apple Drawings’ at the Hunt Museum, Limerick in February-March 2018.

    SAVILLS ART PRIZE TO BE PRESENTED AT VUE

    The Savills Art Prize will be presented at the Vue contemporary art fair at the Royal Hibernian Academy on Thursday, November 2.   It is to be awarded to an artist who has exhibited in the last year and made a substantial contribution to the visual arts in Ireland.  Vue runs at the RHA from November 2-5 next.

    “This is the third year the Savills Art Prize has been presented at Vue and we hope the award will become as important to Irish art as the Turner Prize is in the UK,” said Vue 2017 organiser Louis O’Sullivan. “Savills is the perfect partner to present the prize as most art is found in homes and businesses, and not just museums.” In 2017 the prize is worth 5,000.

    Last years winner was Paddy Graham, one of Ireland’s most noted living artists, who is credited with the introduciton to Ireland of neo-Expressionism in the 1980’s.  Galleries participating include Art Box, Kerlin Gallery, Cross Gallery, Gibbons and Nicholas, Molesworth Gallery, Peppercanister Gallery, Stoney Road Press, Hillsboro Fine Art, Green on Red, Eight, Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Taylor Gallery, Black Church Print Studio, Kerlin Gallery, Catherine Hammond Gallery (Cork), Parallel Editions, Gormleys Fine Art, Solomon, Olivier Cornet, Oonagh Young Gallery, Claremorris Gallery and SO Fine Art Editions.

    SHORTLIST FOR SAVILLS ART PRIZE ANNOUNCED

    The shortlist for the Savills Arts Prize – the biggest award in Irish contemporary art – has been announced by Vue 2016, Ireland’s national contemporary art fair. The five artists on the shortlist are Ennis artist Mick O’Dea, visual artist Jaki Irvine, Mullingar artist Patrick Graham, Lisburn artist David Crone and Dublin-based Gavin O’Curry.

    The €5,000 Savills Art Prize will be awarded to the artist who has produced an outstanding body of work in the last year or made some other substantial contribution to the visual arts in Ireland. Vue runs at the Royal Hibernian Academy gallery from November 3, when the prize will be presented, to November 6.

    Galleries exhibiting work at Vue 2016 include Kerlin gallery, Catherine Hammond Gallery (Cork), Cross Gallery, Molesworth Gallery, Stoney Road Press, Hillsboro Fine Art, Green on Red, Eight, Peppercanister, Graphic Studio, Fenderesky, Kevin Kavanagh, Gallery of Photography, Solomon, Olivier Cornet, Taylor Gallery, Gormleys, Jonathan Ellis King, Gibbons and Nicholas, Oonagh Young Gallery and Art Box.
