    NO less than 25 works by Zhang Daqian, the top selling artist in the world at auction in 2011, will come under the hammer at Sotheby’s, Hong Kong on  May 27. He and Picasso, who both continue to exert a mesmeric hold on the international art market decades after their deaths, first met in 1956 and became lifelong friends.

    Both were warm-hearted and hospitable, fond of conversation, good food and drink, who shared their expertise and ideas about painting. When Zhang learned that Picasso had been experimenting with Chinese painting techniques for some time, Zhang – ever the exponent of correct technique – presented his friend with his own set of Chinese brushes.

    This single-owner collection of Zhang Daqian’s work at Sotheby’s is unparalleled. It was assembled by Kao Ling-Mei, a close friend of the artist. In the late 1950’s the two men collaborated on a major publication exploring Zhang’s art, theories and techniques: Chinese Paintings with the Original Paintings & Discourses on Chinese Art by Professor Chang Dai-chien. Many seminal works illustrated in the book will highlight the sale which is expected to bring in more than $14 million US.

    RE-DISCOVERED SEASCAPE BY RODERIC O’CONOR AT SOTHEBY’S

    A rediscovered seascape by Roderic O’Conor is among the highlights at Sotheby’s sale of British and Irish art in London on May 23.  A total of 30 Irish artworks are expected to bring in around one million euro in this sale.

    Painted near Pont-Aven in 1898 Red Rocks and Sea is one of the largest of a series of seascapes executed by O’Conor in the 1890’s. It was painted at Le Pouldu, the coastal outpost of the Pont-Aven school of artists on the western tip of Brittany at Finistere.  It has had only two owners and this is the first appearance at auction of this work. Last purchased at a London exhibition in 1961 it is now estimated at £200,000-300,000. Highlights will be on view at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast on May 9-10 and at Sotheby’s, Molesworth St., Dublin on May 11 and 12.

    Henri Matisse, 1869-1954, Life study of kneeling woman sold for 52,000 at Sheppards.

    A life study of a kneeling woman by Henri Matisse was the top lop at a most successful three day auction at Sheppards in Durrow this week.  The signed ink and coloured wash work, laid down on hand made paper, sold for 52,000 over an estimate of 15,000-25,000.

    At the same sale a Qing Dynasty place celadon jade circular box from a private collection in Co. Offaly sold for 36,000 over an estimate of 800-1,200. It is just 11 centimetres high with a carved lid and a seal on the underside.

    PAINTINGS FROM PERSONAL COLLECTION OF MARINA PICASSO AT SOTHEBY’S

    TWO paintings from the personal collection of Picasso’s grand daughter are to be sold by Sotheby’s in Paris on June 6.  They date from 1938 and 1943. Palette et Tete de Taureau dates from 1938, a year after Guernica.  It is estimated at 1-1.5 million euro.  Femme Assise en Robe Grise shows Dora Maar with dark rings around her eyes and is estimated at 2.5-3.5 million.

    Part of Marina Picasso’s collection was shown in a touring exhibition in the early 1980’s, but this is the first time collectors have an opportunity to buy works offered for sale by his grand daughter.  They will hghlight an Impressionist and Modern Art auction that also features work by Alberto Giacometti, Giorgio de Chirico, Wifredo Lam, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Man Ray and Francis Picabia.
    The Picasso sale will benefit causes supported by Marina Picasso – specifically to benefit children and adolescents in difficulty – in line with acts of generosity she has carried out in Vietnam, France and Switzerland.  Prior to the auction they will be shown in New York and Moscow.

    AN Irish giltwood side table made £23,750 over an estimate of £8,000-12,000 at Christie’s in South Kensington this week.  The early 19th century rectangular table with a variegated grey and pink marble top was part of the Brian Juhos Collection which made £1,607,687.

    The marble top lies  above a green man mask central pendant flanked by acanthus leaves. There are s scroll legs and later ebonised pads, part of a later regilt and restoration.

    NEVER BEFORE SEEN LYRICS OF A BOB DYLAN SONG AT CHRISTIE’S

    The never before seen lyrics of a Bob Dylan song – “Go Away you Bomb” – come up at Christie’s sale of pop culture in South Kensington on June 26.  The bomb song was written for an unpublished book of anti-nuclear protest songs in 1963.  At the time Dylan was working on his seminal album The Freewheelin Bob Dylan.

    The lyrics include handwritten deletions and alterations and offer an insight into the mindset of the artist as he composed. They are being sold by Israel ‘Izzy’ Young, founder of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, New York, who organized Bob Dylan’s first ever concert. The lyrics are estimated to realise between £25,000 and £35,000 and proceeds will benefit the Folklore Center in Stockholm.

    GLASS BOWL FROM ANCIENT PERSIA MAKES £481,250 AT BONHAMS

    An astonishing survivor – a glass Achaemenid bowl from the ancient Persian Empire, c 5th-early 4th century B.C. made £481,250 at Bonhams sale of antiquities in London on May 1 over an estimate of £30,000-50,000.  It came from an English private collection.

    There is a similar bowl in the Hermitage collection in St. Petersburg, Russia. The largest collection of Persian glass known was recovered between 1931 and 1934 from the palace treasury at Persepolis, the royal residence destroyed by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C.  It consists of 24 pieces. These luxury vessels, made in the finest quality colourless glass, derived their forms from Achaemenid silver and bronze pieces, specially made in imitation of highly prized rock crystal.

    Madeleine Perridge, Head of Antiquities at Bonhams, commented: “The price achieved for this wonderful ancient glass bowl is a result of its incredible rarity, excellent condition, and its great provenance from a private collection. There was a great deal of interest in it from around the world.”

    IMPERIAL QING CERAMICS AT SOTHEBY’S IN LONDON

    More than 350 fine Chinese ceramics and works of art will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on May 15.  Ceramics and jades including Imperial Qing ceramics from a Far Eastern collection will feature in an auction expected to bring in more than £7.7 million.

    Robert Bradlow, head of Sotheby’s London Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Department, said: “We have carefully curated this sale to offer some of the finest examples of Chinese ceramics and art currently available to the market.  The collection includes marvellous rarities, including a jade sceptre, a pair of Famille Rose vases and a Famille Verte bowl, all with outstanding provenances”.  (Click on any image to enlarge it).

    AN ORIGINAL COPY OF THE IRISH PROCLAMATION SELLS FOR 96,000

    This original copy of The Irish Proclamation sold for 96,000 at Adams today.

    An original print copy of the 1916 Proclamation sold for 96,000 at James Adam in Dublin today.  The Proclamation of  the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic to the People of Ireland was printed at Liberty Hall on the evening of Sunday, April 23 and read by Patrick Pearse outside the GPO, Dublin on the morning of Easter Monday at the start of the Easter Rising.

     

    The paper was of poor quality but this copy, which is glazed, had been professionally repaired.  It is believed that no more than 50 copies of the first printing have survived.  The text was printed under armed Citizen Army guard at Liberty Hall using paper bought by James Connolly for his Workers’ Republic and a font of type borrowed from a nearby printer.

    The Proclamation of the Irish Republic, recognised as the founding document of modern Irish nationhood, was drafted probably by Patrick Pearse, possibly with amendments by Thomas MacDonagh and James Connolly. The original manuscript has never been found.  This one is believed to have been originally in a house in Harcourt St. which was at one time a ‘safe house’ for Michael Collins.
