    THE connection between the actress Ursula Andress and the onward march of time in Ireland might not at first sight seem all that obvious.  But it is neatly captured in one particular lot at Whyte’s sale of History, Literature and Collectibles in Dublin on March 9.  On offer  among more than 900 lots is a censored James Bond film poster for Dr. No.  In it a dress has been superimposed on Ursula Andress, who wore a bikini in the original.  The poster is estimated at 600-800 and the auction is now on view at Molesworth St. in Dublin.

    SUNDAY INTERIORS SALE AT JAMES ADAM NOW ON VIEW

    The Sunday interiors sale at James Adam in Dublin on March 9 is now on view.  The auction, with more than 580 lots in total, is strong on silver and also offers furniture, art, wine and collectibles.  Two of the more unusual furniture items are some oak Gothic Revival pieces after Pugin.  The catalogue is online.  Here is a small selection:

    MIDDLE EASTERN ART AT CHRISTIE’S DUBAI

    Two important collections of Middle Eastern art will lead the 16th sale season at Christie’s Dubai on March 19. The Pharos Collection of 55 works includes works by the leading names of the modern Egyptian art movement while the Maath Alousi Collection focuses on modern Iraqi art acquired by this important architect of the modern Arab world. The Important Watch sale will be held the following evening with 120 watches representing the world’s leading luxury brands.

    RARE STATUE OF THE YOUNG HERCULES LEADS CHRISTIE’S ANTIQUITIES SALE

    A rare statue of the young Hercules leads Christie’s sale of Antiquities in London on April 2.  A total  of  199  lots which span the ancient world from the 3rd Millennium B.C. to the 11th Century A.D. are on offer.  The sale expected to realize more than £2 million.  The Hercules, formerly in the Roger Peyrefitte (1907-2000) Collection in Paris is estimated at £100,000-150,000. Peyrefitte was a French diplomat and novelist, whose collection, including this piece, was published in 1972. Further highlights include a pair of Egyptian alabaster canopic jars for Tau-Iert-Iru (£50,000 – 70,000) and a Roman marble Fortuna, previously in the collection at Harewood House (£25,000 – 35,000).

    The statue shows him wearing the Namean lion skin, which was won in his first labour.  The Romans followed the Greek taste for artistic  renderings of infants. Depictions of Hercules as an infant abound but there are few representations of him evident as a plump child, as here.

    NELSON’S TEAPOT AND TITANIC CLARET JUG BRING GLOBAL BIDDING

    Nearly 2,000 collectors from across the globe registered to bid for the collection of the late Stanley J. Seeger at Sotheby’s in London on March 5 and 6.  So it is hardly surprising that bidders came out in droves to vie for objects collected by Seeger whose taste was  eclectic, but always refined.  The sale offers everything from dinosaur eggs to a replica of  Tutankhamun’s golden throne.  Among the pieces sold yesterday were Admiral Lord Nelson’s teapot which made £56,250 over a top estimate of £12,000; a claret jug from the Titanic which made £40,000 over a top estimate of £3,000 and Sir Winston Churchill’s c1880 armchair which made £27,500 over a top estimate of £5,000.

    UPDATE: ON the second day of the sale Orson Welles own working copy of the script for Citizen Kane sold for £98,500 over a top estimate of £20,000 and Al Capone’s cocktail shaker made £50,000 over a top estimate of £1,500.  The sale concluded with an outstanding total of £7,348,009, well above pre-sale expectations  of £3-4.5 million.

    DEATH OF ARTIST BARRIE COOKE

    The death has taken place of the artist Barrie Cooke.    His richly expressionistic paintings were influenced by the nature and mythology of Ireland and extensive travels in Lapland, New Zealand, Borneo and Malaya.  Born in Cheshire, England in 1931 he moved to Ireland in 1954.  As a teenager he lived in the US and studied Art History at Harvard.  He had his first solo exhibition in Dublin in 1955, and received a scholarship to study with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg the same year.  Cooke represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1963.

    Barrie Cooke exhibited widely throughout Europe, the US and New Zealand. Major retrospectives include the Royal Hibernian Academy Gallery, Dublin in 2003, LAC, Perpignan, France in 1995, the Haags Gemeentemuseum in 1992 and the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 1986. Recent exhibitions include the Irish Musuem of Modern Art, Dublin, Crawford Art Gallery, Cork (2011), the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny; (2009) and Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo (2002). His work is represented in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Ulster Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, Holland and in many other public and private collections worldwide.

    Since the death in 2012 of Louis le Brocquy  Barrie Cooke could rightly have  laid claim to the title of the grand old man of Irish art.  He died in Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow on March 4.

    WINNING VENICE BIENNALE ARTWORK ON VIEW AT LISMORE

    AN artwork which won a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2013 is about to go on view in Lismore, Co. Waterford. Attempting to tell the story of the universe’s creation from a computer desktop is the ambitious aim of Grosse Fatigue in which artist Camille Henrot weaves sound, film and narrative.  The New York based French artist used the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.  Grosse Fatigue premiered at the 2013 Venice Biennale and won a Silver Lion.  It can been seen in Ireland from March 8 at Lismore Castle Arts, St. Carthage’s Hall.  Curated by Matthew Higgs and presented in collaboration with White Columns Gallery, New York, it will be showing in Lismore on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday during the hours from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. until April 13.

    AS IRISH AS HORSERACING AND DRY STONE WALLS

    A brace of artworks at Adams forthcoming sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on March 25 are as Irish as horse racing and the dry stone walls of the west.  Ireland’s Best, a watercolor from Peter Curling is estimated at 4,000-6,000. It was purchased at the Tryon Gallery in London in 1986 and is illustrated in “Collecting Sporting Art” by J.P.N. Watson published by Sportsman’s Press.  The work was one of six paintings chosen by the artist for the “Injured Jockey Fund” calendar of 1998.
    Sean Scully’s Conversation Colour woodcut, signed and dated 1986, is numbered 18/40 and estimated at 3,000-5,000. A copy of this woodcut is in the collection at MoMA.

    THE LOUVRE MUSEUM UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN ABU DHABI

    An image taken on March 4, 2014 of the building site that will become the Louvre in Abu Dhabi next year.  Located just minutes from the business centre at Saadiyat Island the museum is designed by the Pritzker Prize winning architect Jean Nouvel.  The design combines modern architecture and Arabic traditions. Two thirds of the museum is to be covered by a white dome, 180 metres in diameter.  An arrangement of geometric openings inspired by interlaced palm leave traditionally used as roofing material will create a “rain of light” and make it possible to control the temperature inside.  The design reflects a desire to create a universal museum in which all cultures are brought together.  The museum is scheduled to open in 2015.  The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by Frank Gehry, is scheduled to be completed on an adjacent site on Saadiyat Island in 2017.

    PICASSO DRAWINGS ON EXHIBITION AT SOTHEBY’S PARIS

    A  selection of 50 drawings by Picasso from the private collection of his grand-daughter Marina Picasso will be exhibited at Sotheby’s in Paris from March 28-April 1.  The ensemble, which includes a handful of ceramics,  will be exhibited  during the Salon International du Dessin in Paris.  It  will focus the theme of The Nude in Picasso’s work. Starting with his erotically tinged Indian ink sketches of prostitutes from his Barcelona period, and continuing down to his remarkable Artist & Model series, the Nude remained a subject of constant desire and fascination for Picasso, one which he explored in a variety of styles and media.  This was the theme which prompted Pablo Picasso to engage in the visual experimentation that would lead to Cubism.  Among the preparatory drawings for his seminal Les Demoiselles d’Avignon featured in the exhibition are Woman’s Body – Front View (1908).
