  • TREASURES OF A STORIED MANHATTAN COLLECTION AT CHRISTIE’S

    This unusual early 19th century Regency ormolu and patinated bronze mantel comes up at an online sale at Christie’s in New York from June 15-July 1. Treasures of a Storied Manhattan Collection features 130 lots of European furniture and decorative art, Chinese furniture and ceramics, 19th century porcelain and silver, and 20th/21st century works of art from the Park Avenue pied-à-terre formerly owned by Enid Annenberg Haupt, the American publisher and philanthropist. The mantel pictured here, made by Thomas Weeks, is estimated at $70,000-100,000.

    HISTORICAL IRISH ADVERTISING COLLECTORS SALE

    The two day sale of historical Irish advertising material assembled over 40 years by  a private collector in the south east at Sheppards in Durrow on June 10 and 11 has aroused much interest among collectors.  Lots on offer mark the changes over the years from 1880 to 1990 and include some real rarities like this mirror advertisement for Sullivan’s Ales in Kilkenny.     A LEGENDARY LINE AT JULIEN’S MUSIC ICONS SALE

    Alex Van Halen’s custom designed Ludwig drum kit stage played on over 100 shows of Van Halen’s 1980 Invasion tour comes up at Julien’s Music Icons auction live and online from Hollywood on June 11, 12 and 13. Over 1,000 music iconography featuring instruments, memorabilia, wardrobe and personal property owned and used by the greatest 20th and 21st century’s pop culture icons representing the genres of rock and roll, pop, soul, R&B and beyond will be offered. The lineup of legends includes Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, Kurt Cobain, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Elton John, Little Richard, Cher, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Whitney Houston and more.

    “This kit from the 1980 Van Halen Invasion World Tour spent 5 years on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland,” said Alex Van Halen. “It’s the only one like it in the world and I’m happy that 100% of the selling price will be going to charity via the Frangioni Foundation and Mr. Holland’s Opus.” UPDATE: THE DRUM KIT SOLD FOR $230,400, THE AUCTION BROUGHT IN NEARLY $5 MILLION.

    BRONZE CLASSICAL LIONS MAKE 4,500 AT HAMMER

    This exceptional pair of bronze garden classical lions with a top estimate of 4,000 sold for a hammer price of €4,500 at Hegarty’s sale in Bandon today. They attracted a number of competitive bidders on the phone and the internet. An 18th century Irish silver teapot made 1,700, an early 19th century silver serving platter and mazarin grill by Paul Storr made 6,900 and a pair of foldover rosewood card tables made 4,400.

    Bidding is  underday for the timed online At Home sale at James Adam in Dublin which begins to close at 10 am on June 9.  There is garden furniture, a big selection of silver including some Cork pieces, jewellery, antique furniture, art, porcelain and collectibles including a pair of 19th century brass starting cannons.

    BRIDGE OVER THE AWBEG AT BUTTEVANT CASTLE

    An unframed, unsigned pencil sketch – “Bridge over the Awbeg at Buttevant Castle” – comes up at  Aidan Foley’s online auction at Doneraile today.  Lot 301 dates to the 1840’s and seems to be in good condition.  A purchaser might set out to solve the mystery of who made it.  The auction features a broad mix of antique furniture and collectible items as well as art by Albert Hartland, Arthur Maderson, Pauline Bewick, Con Campbell, Lorna Miller, Marie Carroll and others.

    A selection of furniture, art, silver , garden furniture and jewellery will come under the hammer at Hegarty’s online sale in Bandon tomorrow. Among the highlights are an 18th century Irish silver teapot made in Dublin in 1796 and a silver fork by the Limerick maker Maurice Fitzgerald.  Lots of note include an exceptional pair of bronze garden classical lions and a mid 18th century Irish Georgian tea table.

    IRISH SILVER DISH RING AT ADAMS AT HOME SALE

    This George III Irish silver dish ring is lot 48 at the James Adam timed online At Home sale in Dublin on June 9. It was made in Dublin c1775 by Ambrose Boxwell and is estimated at 800-1,200. The online catalogue lists 110 lots of silver and plate as well as a large selection of jewellery, furniture and collectibles. UPDATE: THIS MADE 1,600 AT HAMMER

    ELIZABETHAN PORTRAITS AT NATIONAL GALLERY OF IRELAND

    THIS portrait of Elizabeth Fitzgerald, the Irish noblewoman who was Countess of Lincoln, lady in waiting and close friend of Queen Elizabeth I, is part of an exhibition of Elizabethan portraits now on at the National Gallery of Ireland. Born in Maynooth and daughter of the 9th Earl of Kildare she was a member of the Fitzgerald dynasty and known as The Fair Geraldine. Silken Thomas, who was executed for treason, was her half brother. This is the first full exhibition of colourful and engaging Elizabethan portraits in the collection. It features portraits of well-known sixteenth-century historical figures, from politicians to soldiers, royal suitors to adventurers. Portraits include Elizabeth I and her lover Robert Dudley; Sir Walter Ralegh and his wife Lady Ralegh; and the Earl of Ormond. The exhibition runs until October 3.

    CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY INTERIORS AT MULLEN’S AUCTION

    This 1960’s lounge chair by Luigi Vietta and produced by Fratelli Besana comes up as lot 23 at Mullen’s Classic and Contemporary Interiors sale at Laurel Park, Bray, Co. Wicklow on June 7. It is estimated at 340-440. The sale of 798 lots gets underway at 6 pm.

    HENRY SOARS ABOVE ESTIMATE AT ADAMS IRISH ART SALE

    PAUL HENRY (1877-1958) – COTTAGES IN ACHILL

    Cottages in Achill by Paul Henry made a hammer price of 210,000 over a top estimate of 160,000 at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin this evening. Another top lot was an original copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic signed by the printer Christoper Brady. Inscribed on the rear is that it was obtained in Sackville St., Dublin on Easter Monday, April 24, 1916. It made a hammer price of 170,000 over an estimate of 150,000-200,000.
