    TEFAF FALL NEW YORK TO BOOST ONLINE ART SALES

    The online development of the market for art and antiques was boosted this week with the announcement that Invaluable will be marquee sponsors for both TEFAF New York and TEFAF Maastricht.  The new association is to launch at TEFAF New York Fall, which runs from October 22-26 at the Park Avenue Armoury.  TEFAF’s debut fair outside Europe will feature 94 of the world’s most illustrious dealers of fine art, design, furniture and jewelry from antiquity through the early 20th century.

    Invaluable’s experience is in helping galleries and dealers develop robust digital strategies and connect with the company’s collector base from 180 countries. In the coming months Invaluable and TEFAF will launch the TEFAF Digital Excellence Program powered by Invaluable to provide dealers with the digital tools necessary to grow their business and connect with new buyers online.

    ANTIQUE FAIR AT TALBOT HOTEL, STILLORGAN, NEXT WEEKEND

    Hibernian Antique Fairs will bring what is billed as the Ist Dublin Antique, Art and Vintage fair to the Talbot Hotel, Stillorgan on October 15-16.  More than 70 dealers from Ireland and abroad including 12 Irish Antique Dealers Association members. two London jewellery dealers and two jewellery dealers from Germany will be in attendance.  Among those exhibiting are 20 dealers from around Ireland who have not shown in Dublin before. There will be art, antique furniture, silver, jewellery, vintage items, fashion, glass, ceramics and an array of collectibles.  Opening times are from 11 am to 6 pm on both days.fair

    ALL THE FUN OF THE IADA FAIR AT THE RDS

    The 51st annual Irish Antique Dealers Fair previews tonight at the RDS in Dublin. The best of antique furniture, silver, glass, silver, contemporary Irish art and design will be on display in a weekend fair which is expected to draw up to 15,000 people between now and closing on Sunday evening.  Legendary US interior designer Carleton Varney, who has designed for five US first ladies in a row from Jackie Kennedy to Barbara Bush and this year received four nominations in the international hotel awards, is among the speakers at the event.

    Julian Radcliffe of the Art Loss Register will host a talk on Protecting Irish Heritage, Recovering Stolen Art and Antiques in Ireland.  Antiques dealer Niall Mullen predicts a bumper year for the fair with an increase in demand for antique furniture driven by a strong domestic property market.  Here is a small selection from the very large offering available at the fair.

    THE IRISH ANTIQUE DEALERS FAIR

    The internet is bringing younger buyers to auction. In an attempt to involve the discriminating younger collector the focus of the Irish Antique Dealers Fair in Dublin has shifted in latter years to include quality contemporary and antique furniture and collectibles.  This years fair, which runs at the RDS from September 23-25, will feature the doyen of American designers Carleton Varney, president of the Dorothy Draper brand, the oldest established design firm in the US.

    He is pro antique and pro brown furniture, believing that for lifestyle you must incorporate the past with the now and leave room for the future. Mr. Varney is associated with the restoration of top hotels around the world including Adare Manor, Dromoland and Ashford Castle in Ireland and the Waldorf Towers and the Plaza Hotel in New York. He designed for five US first ladies from Jackie Kennedy to Barbara Bush. In Dublin he will head a packed programme that these days manages to combine contemporary design with the best of Irish antiques.

    “For the past 51 years, people have been attending the fair to discover something different, that magical piece that can make a home,” said George Stacpoole, chairman of the Irish Antique Dealers Association (IADA), who has been present at every event so far. “The fair is a fascinating insight into great craftsmanship throughout the ages, attracting collectors and connoisseurs of all tastes. We have a carefully selected blend of antique and contemporary exhibitors, allowing all ages to focus on the unique yet affordable design that appeals to them”. Over 15,000 people are expected to attend the fair. There is an invitation only preview on Thursday evening.

    A TRIBAL ART FAIR IN LONDON

    Tribal Art London – the UK’s only art fair devoted exclusively to selling works from specialists in non-Western Art – runs at the Mall Galleries, SW1 from September 1-4.  The 22 international specialists involved will bring works ranging from dance masks to metalwork, textiles to tribal adornment, early photography to contemporary paintings at prices from under £100 to over £20,000.  Here is a selection:

    AN ANTIQUE FAIR AT THE ROSE OF TRALEE FESTIVAL

    It is that time of year again and for the first time this year Hibernian Antique Fairs will hit town from the annual Rose of Tralee festival.  The first Rose of Tralee Antiques Art & Vintage Fair takes place at  The Earl of Desmond Hotel on August 20 and 21.  Opening times are from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 20 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 21.  There will be 40 antique shops, dealers, gallery’s and vintage dealers from around Ireland in attendance.  Among them will be Treasures Irish Art Athlone (IADA), Marie Curran Jewellery Dublin (IADA), Greene’s Antique Furniture Drogheda (IADA), Billy Harnett Furniture Co.Limerick, Robert Delahunty Fine Art, Clonakilty, Co.Cork, Tara Crystal Chandeliers,  Co.Waterford, Richard Walshe Coins & Banknotes Co.Galway, EIly Henry, Vintage Fashion, Co.Waterford and Sheila Poots, China & Porcelain Belfast.

    SOTHEBY’S HONG KONG AUTUMN SALES TO TEMPT COLLECTORS

    MASTERPIECE CONTINUES TO DRAW THE CROWDS

    Masterpiece continues to draw the crowds in London.  Over 5,000 guests attended on the first public day and daily numbers are continuing at close to this level. The premier fair reflects at a very high level the cross collecting taste that is now so fashionable. At Masterpiece you can take your pick.  There is everything from a monumental fragment of a standing male statute leg and feet at Axel Vervoodt and the Louis XIV walnut Os de Mouton sofa at Rose Uniacke to the 1966 Rhthme Couleur by Sonia Delaunay at Helene Bailly Gallery and Graham Sutherland’s Study of Sir Winston Churchill from 1954 at Christopher Kingzett. This is a rare preparatory sketch for a portrait that was considered so unflattering that it was destroyed.  Royal Bank of Canada continues as the principal sponsor of Masterpiece.  Exhibitors continue to report sales across a wide range of disciplines.  Masterpiece continues until July 6.

    THE WARWICK VASE FROM HADRIAN’S VILLA AT MASTERPIECE

    The massive mid 19th century Warwick Vase is a highlight at Anthony Outred’s stand at Masterpiece, which runs until next Wednesday at the Royal Hospital at Chelsea in London. It is of ancient Roman origin and Bacchic inspiration and was discovered in fragments at Hadrian’s Villa in 1771 by Gavin Hamilton. It was restored to Piranesi’s designs by Sir William Hamilton and passed to his nephew George Greville, Second Earl of Warwick. It now resides in Glasgow as part of the Burrell Collection.

    England is represented on the stand by a pair of panoramic views of Westminster that span 300 years.  One shows the buildings of 1895, the other is based on engravings from the time of Henry VIII.  They are based on aerial studies and engravings by English artists William Brewer and William Lionel Wyllie executed from a balloon 1,400 up.  They were published in May 1884 in the weekly illustrated magazine The Graphic.

    AN ITALIAN FIREPLACE FROM IRELAND IN ENGLAND

    A c1790 Italian chimney piece from a collection in Ireland was one of a number of Irish pieces spotted at Masterpiece, the pre-eminent London fair now running at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. At the stand of leading London dealer Ronald Phillips, where it is priced at a cool £850,000, the chimney piece is thought to have been commissioned by the Earl Bishop of Derry.  There are rosso antico plaques and micro-mosaic panels.  The last time such a fireplace came up at auction, at Sotheby’s around five years ago, it sold for £550,000.

    The bucket to the right of the chimney piece is one of a pair c1800 of Irish log buckets with brass handles and later brass liners.  They are unusually tall and priced at £205,000.

    More than 8,000 guests attended the opening day preview yesterday.  Many exhibitors reported robust sales.
