    A RANGE OF ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES AT LIMERICK FAIR

    No matter what area of interest you pursue as a collector you will get to take your pick from a range which includes everything from antique Irish furniture and contemporary art to Waterford and Murano glass, coins and medals at the National Antiques, Art and Vintage fair at the South Court Hotel in Limerick on November 12-13.
    In the beginning of the run up to Christmas Hibernian Antique Fairs come home to Limerick for what is one of the most popular events on their annual calendar. It is always a crowd puller.  There will be at least five art galleries, ten antique furniture stalls, twelve dealers with jewellery, silver and objets d’art and rare book dealers from around the country. In addition to all this a range of dealers big and small will bring Oriental furniture and effects, costume jewellery, vintage fashion, coins, banknotes, medals, militaria, china, porcelain, brass, copper, clocks, watches, gramophones and car memorabilia.
    Among those present will be George Stacpoole of Adare, the Irish Antique Dealers Association President and IADA members like Greene’s Galleries, Drogheda, Roger Grimes and Vanessa Parker of Co. Mayo and Weldons of Dublin.  This assembly of antique business professionals from all over the island of Ireland, North and South offers collectors an unrivalled opportunity to see what dealers from Belfast to Ballina and Dublin to Dromcollogher have in stock.

    TEFAF OPENS TO RAVE REVIEWS AND RECORD CROWDS IN NEW YORK

    jorge-welshExhibitors at TEFAF New York Fall 2016 have been extremely positive about the event.  The light and airy atmosphere was much appreciated by attendees of the historic building that  is the Park Avenue Armoury.  It was completely transformed by Dutch designer Tom Postma especially for the fair, which runs until tomorrow.  The 94 world-class specialist dealers from 14 countries, showing museum-quality fine art and antiques, delivered the total “TEFAF experience.”

    Hicham Aboutaam of Phoenix Ancient Art, who presented a remarkable “Park Avenue Pantheon,” said: “The VIP preview day was spectacularly crowded. There were many new faces along with well-known international collectors and an impressive number of people from the museum world, all with their eye on their next acquisition. We are extremely happy with TEFAF and their celebration of the Armory.”

    Jorge Welsh Fine Art of Kensington Church Street, London – exhibiting in New York for the first time in ten years –  have put together a group of  Chinese export porcelain pieces, resulting from the cultural encounter between West and East in the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.  Their stand is illustrated here.

    These days you can view many auctions from the comfort of your own home and buyers are increasingly doing just that.  Locally, nationally and internationally auction houses are finding new buyers on the internet. The online portal Invaluable is teaming up with the prestigious European Fine Art Fair TEFAF to connect with a collector base in 180 countries. TEFAF opens its debut fair outside Europe at the Park Avenue Armoury in New York today.

    Closer to home there are two online sales of Irish art running this weekend, at Whyte’s and Morgan O’Driscoll. Whyte’s are offering nearly 200 lots with estimates from 100 to 6,000 in an auction with examples from the McClelland Collection and work by Yeats, Lavery, William Conor, Nano Reid, Mainie Mellett, Harry Kernoff, Tony O’Malley and Basil Blackshaw.  There are 230 lots in Morgan O’Driscoll’s sale, which includes 13 works of sculpture.  The sale runs until 6.30 pm next Monday and is on view in Skibberen from noon to 5 pm today and tomorrow and from 11 am to 3 pm on Monday.  Whyte’s sale is on view at Molesworth St., Dublin from 1 pm to 5 pm today and from 10 am to 5 pm on Monday.  Their auction starts at 6 pm.

    TEFAF FALL NEW YORK TO BOOST ONLINE ART SALES

    The online development of the market for art and antiques was boosted this week with the announcement that Invaluable will be marquee sponsors for both TEFAF New York and TEFAF Maastricht.  The new association is to launch at TEFAF New York Fall, which runs from October 22-26 at the Park Avenue Armoury.  TEFAF’s debut fair outside Europe will feature 94 of the world’s most illustrious dealers of fine art, design, furniture and jewelry from antiquity through the early 20th century.

    Invaluable’s experience is in helping galleries and dealers develop robust digital strategies and connect with the company’s collector base from 180 countries.     ANTIQUE FAIR AT TALBOT HOTEL, STILLORGAN, NEXT WEEKEND

    Hibernian Antique Fairs will bring what is billed as the Ist Dublin Antique, Art and Vintage fair to the Talbot Hotel, Stillorgan on October 15-16.  More than 70 dealers from Ireland and abroad including 12 Irish Antique Dealers Association members. two London jewellery dealers and two jewellery dealers from Germany will be in attendance.  Among those exhibiting are 20 dealers from around Ireland who have not shown in Dublin before. There will be art, antique furniture, silver, jewellery, vintage items, fashion, glass, ceramics and an array of collectibles.  Opening times are from 11 am to 6 pm on both days.fair

    ALL THE FUN OF THE IADA FAIR AT THE RDS

    The 51st annual Irish Antique Dealers Fair previews tonight at the RDS in Dublin. The best of antique furniture, silver, glass, silver, contemporary Irish art and design will be on display in a weekend fair which is expected to draw up to 15,000 people between now and closing on Sunday evening.  Legendary US interior designer Carleton Varney, who has designed for five US first ladies in a row from Jackie Kennedy to Barbara Bush and this year received four nominations in the international hotel awards, is among the speakers at the event.

    Julian Radcliffe of the Art Loss Register will host a talk on Protecting Irish Heritage, Recovering Stolen Art and Antiques in Ireland.  Antiques dealer Niall Mullen predicts a bumper year for the fair with an increase in demand for antique furniture driven by a strong domestic property market.  Here is a small selection from the very large offering available at the fair.

    THE IRISH ANTIQUE DEALERS FAIR

    The internet is bringing younger buyers to auction. In an attempt to involve the discriminating younger collector the focus of the Irish Antique Dealers Fair in Dublin has shifted in latter years to include quality contemporary and antique furniture and collectibles.  This years fair, which runs at the RDS from September 23-25, will feature the doyen of American designers Carleton Varney, president of the Dorothy Draper brand, the oldest established design firm in the US.

    He is pro antique and pro brown furniture, believing that for lifestyle you must incorporate the past with the now and leave room for the future. Mr. Varney is associated with the restoration of top hotels around the world including Adare Manor, Dromoland and Ashford Castle in Ireland and the Waldorf Towers and the Plaza Hotel in New York. He designed for five US first ladies from Jackie Kennedy to Barbara Bush. In Dublin he will head a packed programme that these days manages to combine contemporary design with the best of Irish antiques.

    “For the past 51 years, people have been attending the fair to discover something different, that magical piece that can make a home,” said George Stacpoole, chairman of the Irish Antique Dealers Association (IADA), who has been present at every event so far. “The fair is a fascinating insight into great craftsmanship throughout the ages, attracting collectors and connoisseurs of all tastes. We have a carefully selected blend of antique and contemporary exhibitors, allowing all ages to focus on the unique yet affordable design that appeals to them”. Over 15,000 people are expected to attend the fair. There is an invitation only preview on Thursday evening.

    A TRIBAL ART FAIR IN LONDON

    Tribal Art London – the UK’s only art fair devoted exclusively to selling works from specialists in non-Western Art – runs at the Mall Galleries, SW1 from September 1-4.  The 22 international specialists involved will bring works ranging from dance masks to metalwork, textiles to tribal adornment, early photography to contemporary paintings at prices from under £100 to over £20,000.  Here is a selection:
