DINOSAUR EGGS, CHURCHILL AND AL CAPONE

    Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

IT is not every day that an auction throws up a selection that ranges from Dinosaur eggs to Winston Churchill to Al Capone.  The auction of the private collection of Stanley J. Seeger at Sotheby’s in London on March 5 and 6  offers all that and extra in more than 1,000 lots across 75 collecting categories.  This encyclopaedic collection has been grouped together by Sotheby’s until the title 1,000 ways of seeing. Starting chronologically with 250 million year old fossilised trees it charts many moments in history and art.

Whimsicality, humour and historical resonance always appealed to Stanley Seeger (1930-2011) and Christopher Cone. The works of art, objects and curiosities they collected were part of their everyday life. Guests to their homes might be invited to sit in Winston Churchill’s armchair, while being poured tea from Lord Nelson’s silver teapot or served Bloody Marys from Al Capone’s cocktail shaker – a Christmas gift from the gangster’s men, engraved “To a regular guy, from the boys 1932”. Stanley Seeger’s great enthusiasm for natural history is reflected in the collection in ten fossilised dinosaur eggs from the Jurassic Period (100 million BC), while his fascination with film, history and great historical figures is reflected in Orson Welles’ working draft script for Citizen Kane (1941).

Melanie Clore, Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe, who worked with Stanley Seeger many times over the years, said: “Only once in a generation does a collector with such diverse, interesting and far-reaching taste as Stanley Seeger appear. His engaging intelligence and wry sense of humour are reflected in the sheer ‘joie de vivre’ of this sale. Every single object has a story to tell and is enhanced by its association with one of the greatest collectors of his generation”.

GLOBAL SALES OF £4.5 BILLION MAKE IT A RECORD YEAR FOR CHRISTIE’S

    Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

IT was a record 2013 for Christie’s, which today announced global sales of £4.5 billion pounds in the year to December.  This is the highest sales total for any auction house in the history of the art market.  Sales were driven by an increase in new buyers, growth markets such as China and the internet. A total of 30% of buyers in 2013 were new and they accounted for 22% of sales.  Sales in Asia were up by 44%.

Nine of the top ten lots sold were works of art headed by Francis Bacon’s  Three Studies of Lucian Freud.  This became the most valuable painting ever sold at auction last November when it made $142.4 million in New York.  The other lots in the top ten, in order, were artworks by Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean Michel Basquiat, Mark Rothko, Amadeo Modigliani and Edward Hopper. At number 10 was a Pink Golconda diamond which sold for $39.2 million.

Steven P. Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Christie’s, said: “

Francis Bacon (1909-1992) Three Studies of Lucian Freud each (unframed): 78 x 58 in. (198 x 147.5 cm.) oil on canvas Painted in 1969

Francis Bacon (1909-1992) Three Studies of Lucian Freud – the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.

Christie’s has succeeded again by focusing on the art and connecting it to the ever-increasing audience of enthusiasts and collectors. We continue to see a surge in interest across categories and across the globe, fuelled in large part by the online platform enabling greater connectivity between buyers, sellers and the objects of their pursuit.  Our strategy to invest in new markets such as China, new channels such as Private Sales and online sales, and to build on our position at the leading auction house, has enabled Christie’s to grow.  Our continuing goal is to provide more to our clients and to convene new clients to enjoy art, be it through auctions, exhibitions or online.”
