    A COMPANION TO A PAIR OF COMMODES AT THE FRICK

    A magnificent companion pair to the Blake of London commodes in the Frick Collection will come up at Sotheby’s in New York on October 15.    The estimate is $300,000-500,000.  Sotheby’s auctions of 19th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts in New York will feature both a dedicated single-owner sale from a distinguished Asian collection and a various owners auction.  The collection was formed over 50 years with the help of renowned dealers in London and Paris.  There are 18th and 19th century pieces based on royal and aristocratic models of the ancien regime as well as creations from Francois Linke and Leon Message.

    CARVED OAK ST. CATHERINE ONCE OWNED BY WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST

    A carved oak St. Catherine formerly in the collection of William Randolph Hearst is among the lots from the estate of German American actress Luise Rainer (1910-2014) to be offered by Juliens Auctions in Beverly Hills on October 1.  It is estimated at $3,000-5,000.  Once known as the new Garbo, Luise Rainer was the first actress to win back-to-back Academy Awards, the first in 1936 for her performance as Anna Held in The Great Ziegfeld and the second in 1937 for her performance as O-Lan in The Good Earth.  Her collection features European antiques, Old Master and Contemporary art, career memorabilia, furniture and personal effects from her longtime home in London’s Eaton Square.

    ECHOES OF ADARE MANOR AUCTION AT HEGARTY’S IN BANDON

    An Irish George III stool with cabriole legs and a George II circular wine table with birdcage movement originally purchased at the Adare Manor auction in June 1982 will come up at Hegarty’s auction in Bandon on August 11.  Hegarty’s have not put an estimate on lots 329 and 330 on their online catalogue.  The sale features a coin, jewellery and silver collection.  The highlight here is a proof 22 carat gold medal commemorating the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings by Spink and Sons, London, 1966.  The medal weighs six ounces and is estimated at 5,000-7,000.

    A FRENCH ROYAL FAMILY SALE AT SOTHEBY’S PARIS

    Paintings, drawings, furniture and historical memorabilia from the French royal family will come up at Sotheby’s in Paris on September 29.  The sale  from the collections of the late Comte de Paris (1909-1999) and Comtesse de Paris (1911-2003)  is from the dynasty that reigned over France for nearly a thousand years.  There are 200 lots from various residences of the Orléans family, the cadet branch, which later became the eldest branch of the Royal House of France.  In 1848, during the July Revolution which ended the reign of Louis-Philippe, they went with the royal family into exile, firstly to Claremont House in England, then to the Manoir d’Anjou in Belgium, and then to Portugal.  They returned to France in the 1950s when the exile act barring pretenders to the French throne from French territory was repealed.  They have always remained the private property of the descendants of King Louis-Philippe.  The works have been housed since 1974 by the Fondation Saint-Louis and were restored to the heirs of the Comte and Comtesse de Paris by a district court ruling in 2013.

    YEATS HORSES IN WEST OF IRELAND AUCTION AT CLIFDEN

    Hobby Horses, a 1927 oil by Jack B. Yeats, will be one of a number of highlights at the August Bank Holiday summer art and collectibles auction by Dolans in Clifden on August 3 and 4.  It is estimated at 78,000-85,000. The 540 lot auction includes a limited edition copy of Anna Livia Plurabelle signed by James Joyce and published in New York in 1928 estimated at 1,800-2,200.

    Photographs from the Lawrence Collection make up the opening lots on Monday, August 3.  The three 19th century albums focus on Counties Kildare, Donegal and Kilkenny. Each one is estimated at 350-450. There is art by Harry Kernoff, Norah McGuinness, Kenneth Webb, Sean Keating and a wide selection of artists like Frank Egginton whose work is closely associated with the west of Ireland.  European painting is represented by Lazlo Neogrady’s Winter Sunlight, a snow scene of quality estimated at 6,000-8,000.  Collectibles include an exceptionally large copper preserving pan and a miniature chest of drawers.  The second day of the sale kicks off with some advertising metal posters, signs and lithographs by Shell and Guinness. The auction features paintings, silver, books, furniture, antiques, collectibles and rugs.  The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

    FRENCH WALNUT SIDE TABLES AT CORK AUCTION

    A pair of French demi-lune tables from the estate of Rathcormac, Co. Cork collector Tim Arnold will highlight Woodwards summer sale on July 29.  The late Mr. Arnold had taken ownership of a disused church in the village last year with the intention of creating a heritage centre. Furniture and effects from the church are included in the auction.  The tables are estimated at 2,500-4,000.  The catalogue is online and the auction will be broadcast live on the internet.

    RECORD HALF YEAR SALES OF £2.9 BILLION AT CHRISTIE’S

    Record half year sales of £2.9 billion, up 8% on the same period for 2014, were announced by Christie’s today.  The auction house said that results were underpinned by strong results across numerous categories including Impressionist and Modern, Post-War and Contemporary Art and Asian Art. Curatorial innovation and a revised sales calendar have attracted collectors at all levels and Christie’s continues to invest in online platforms as well as traditional salerooms and private sales.  New clients represented 24% of buyers. The number of middle market buyers grew by 14%.

    Patricia Barbizet, Christie’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “During the first half of 2015 Christie’s clients spanned 99 countries, demonstrating how truly international sales activity is at all levels and reflecting the expanse of the art market. We are meeting new demands while continuing to show strength in core categories and maintaining market share. Buyer activity of lots between £100,000 and £1,000,000 continues to grow, with the number of buyers up 14%.  Our early investment in online and E-commerce platforms continues to add value across the business. We look forward to more innovative collaboration across categories and regions during the second half and remain fluid as we challenge traditional models of auction for new models of selling art.”

    An exceptionally complete uniform and personal belongings of Major E.F. Farrell, an officer of the Leinster Regiment during World War I, comes up at Fonsie Mealy’s two day sale in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on July 21-22.  The set is estimated at 1,000-1,500.  This auction will feature more than 80 tractor seats in mint condition from a collection. The seats, from Ireland, England, Scotland the US, are to be sold as individual lots with estimates from 40 up to 300.

    Among more than 1,000 lots is a fine salver by Paul Storr (6,000-8,000), a heart shaped 19th century diamond locket with 63 stones (7,000-9,000) and a half length portrait of Lady Gregory by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly (8,000-12,000). The last remaining stained glass windows from the Harry Clarke Studios, which closed in 1973, will be offered in seven lots at estimates from 400 to 9,000. There are paintings formerly in the collection of Judge James Murnaghan of Dublin and a big selection of antique furniture, art, glass, porcelain and collectibles.

    IRISH LONGCASE CLOCK BY ISAAC BULL AT ASHGROVE AUCTION

    An Irish mahogany  long case clock and a George IV Irish dining table are among the lots from the estate of Sylvia (Williams) Fairtlough to be sold by Ashgrove Auctioneers in Ballybrittas, Co. Laois on July 21. Mrs. Fairtlough, of Ashfield Court, Ballybrittas, was a well known antiques dealer and dog breeder, who judged for Crufts. She was married to Richard Williams, a director of Tullamore Distilleries who died in 1968, and then to Geoffrey Fairtlough, who also pre-deceased her.  Sylvia Fairtlough died in 2009.
    The clock, by Isaac Bull of Dublin has an estimate of 1,500-2,500. The triple section dining table is estimated at 800-1,200. Other lots include six 19th century Irish dining chairs (800-1,200), a Victorian ebonised baby grand piano (400-600), a Chinese jade censer, ivory, 18th century oil paintings, African Tribal art, watercolours, silver and plate, ceramics, Irish and other glass and various collectibles.   The catalogue is online.
    UPDATE:  The auction realized 105,000 and Ashgrove are running a timed online  auction of unsold lots until Monday, July 27. A pair of Victorian mirrors sold for 2,500 and a 19th century campaign chest sold for 2,400.
